ASR's training period over - sick and tired

Posted: Jul 26, 2010

Why are we still having to jump through hoops -- highlight and skip marker for more than 5 words, etc.  - for the ASR?  Hasn't it had time to "learn" all it is going to learn?  It would be so much easier just to delete the crap we can't use and have to re-do instead of all the red skip markers, etc.  Anybody been told that we can just DELETE and not SKIP yet?

dont use skip markers - not for years

[ In Reply To ..]
I gave up on ASR a long time and decided to only use a skip marker at the beginning for the ADT info, and that is only if I remember to do that. Mostly I just highlight and type or do whatever is fastest to get through the report. It isn't learning and never will, the only thing you can do is whatever is best for you and your production.

I'm considering the same thing - Old part-timer

Someone posted last week lamenting how awful our finished reports look and how the spacing is so uneven, sometimes leaving 3 spaces or more between words. I believe this is the fault of the skip markers and believe we would turn out a better-looking finished product if we just took out the text and forgot about the skip markers.

Skip Markers - MT

We were told a long time ago to forget that 5-word rule, so I haven't used it in ages. I just do it for the ASR "jibberish" that shows up when they're giving patient demo info and when they're signing off.

I got banged on that on an audit - not using skip

[ In Reply To ..]
I did not place a skip marker where a doctor had spelled a drug and it was a critical error.

Then, I got another critical error for not placing a redundant marker over, "Thank you, this is Dr. Ronald McDonald, end dictation" It is never spelled right, and I will be dipped if I am going to correct this text and then place a redundant marker, only for ASR to NOT LEARN and have to do it again EVERY DAY.

Hopefully, if you don't use them, they will not mark you wrong, but I failed an audit because of this.

I've been doing ASR since practically day 1 and.... - Old part-timer

I have NEVER placed a single redundant marker in my life. They went back and forth about the situations to use them in and the upshot of it was if you were not CERTAIN about the need for a Redundant skip marker, just go with the regular skip. So, if I were you, I would have really kicked about that one.

I would have really kicked about the other one too; how is not placing a skip marker EVER a critical error? What, like it effects patient care somehow????
Back when I used to get primary accounts, - sick and tired

I made an expansion to replace the misspelled "this is doctor ronald mcdonald end dictation" and put it in about two million times and marked it for ASR and it never, ever, ever learned it. That is why I was wondering if we had to keep on doing the skipping and redundant markers -- but I don't want to get put on 100% QA for something that piddly so guess I will keep on keeping on.
Redundant Marker - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't see how they can rightfully zing you for lack of a Redundant Tag/Marker, whatever you call it. With all the doctors we do, how are we supposed to know that every single time this particular doctor signs off this exact particular way? Once you get to know a doctor, it's probably safe, but even still.... we are always told, when in doubt, use the Skip. I have very few doctors that I can honestly say I know they sign off the exact same way every hundreds of times they dictate.

I am on a small account. It's a difficult one and - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
there aren't many of us on it for that reason. I have corrected, skip markered, and put redundant markers for a particular dictator for months on end. ASR makes the exact same errors each time. After months upon months of changing each report identically, it STILL cranks out the exact same errors, literally. It WON'T learn. I honestly don't get it.

ASR - Jax

[ In Reply To ..]
It is not the ASR program that is flawed. It's the fact that there are hundreds of MEs editing these reports and making mistakes that the ASR is then learning. I worked for a hospital at one point that was looking into purchasing an ASR program to use, and I have done a lot of research into these programs. If you tell the system over and over that Pyridium is spelled perideum (which I have seen), that is what the system will learn even if it has been programmed correctly. You may be doing it correctly, but that does not mean that the other MEs on your accounts are doing it right.

What is interesting is - how has it suddenly

[ In Reply To ..]
gotten so bad? Is it just me or has the ASR really been going downhill for the past 2-3 months? Are we all suddenly choosing to teach ASR the wrong way? Could it be Indians sharing our accounts? Why?

just look at this thread for your answer - pushindapedal

[ In Reply To ..]
It learns from us. If you delete enough stuff to throw off the audio, it will never improve. This thread has been done a million times and the answer is the same.

No, I am not management, just an MT who was lucky enough to work with an entire team who followed the ASR rules and now have dictators who would be hard for someone with 25 years of experience to simply transcribe with their work coming through almost perfectly in ASR.

You are shooting yourselves in your pocketbook if you continue to piss and moan instead of improving the platform to improve your speed and reduce errors.

Just sayin.
But we have been doing it correctly for - about 3 years now

and the blessed thing is getting WORSE. Our question was can we stop trying to "train" it and just delete and get on with working and quit highlighting and replacing and skipping etc.

Yeah maybe that makes the difference. - anon

I am on really huge accounts and about 15 of them with probably a million transcriptionists all doing everything differently. I probably couldn't get it right either if I was ASR. I wish it would just go ahead and overheat, catch on fire, and burn up.
The "small account" post says they can't train it either. - nm

ASR-sm - so outa here

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been noticing that too, that ASR seems to, instead of getting better as it's supposed to (as they told us it would), be getting worse. The only thing it is improving on is the doctors who say the same thing over and over on every report.

Mark my words, there is going to be at least one, probably multiple, major disasters from all-electronic records in addition to the worldwide access.

Though probably no one would care how many people were killed because of mistakes in the name of cost cutting. That seems to be their whole aim.

Period Or No Period
Jan 03, 2013

Hi.  I know I am going to get ripped for these questions.  However, I have not transcribed in a while and I cannot remember if mg, mcg should be mg., mcg.  Can someone help me update myself.  Thanks Carol.  Also, since I am asking, for postoperative diagnosis do you type " same "or do you type out what the preop was?  I would appreciate any help as there are so many different ways to transcribe it and sometimes clients have preferences.  Thanks Carol. ...

End Of Pay Period . . .
Jan 20, 2013

and I'm a little concerned.  My supervisor religiously sends out an email reminding people to approve their timecards, and this time - nothing.  I've put in the last of my PTO to cover all the hours I missed this week due to NJA (which is basically a failure of management to staff accounts correctly), and she still hasn't approved it.  She usually has by this time.  My concern is that MModal is going to start pulling stunts like some of these other c ...

End Of Pay Period
Jan 30, 2013

This is to those MTs who do next to nothing for most of the pay period and then the last 2 days decide to make up all of their lines.  It really screws those of who show up every day and work our full day.  I've spent more time hitting the "get next job" today than I've transcribed lines.  I looked back at the last 5 pay periods and every single one of them on the last 2 days of the pay, I was barely able to make my lines. If you're going to be a slacker then just ...

Transcend - No Work Last Day Of Pay Period
Jul 16, 2010

I've noticed this repeatedly over the last several pay periods, particularly with one of my accounts, since Transcend took over.  The last day (or two) of the pay period, there is no work - 0 for every work type!  Next day, work levels back to normal.  Is this due to off-shoring, account hogging to get that last pay check boost...?  Or do patients just stop showing up at the hospital on the 15th of every month?...right. ...

MT At Transcend Who Does 40,000 Lines A Pay Period
Dec 22, 2010

Hey, about 3 years ago there was an MLS who did at least 40,000 lines per 2-week pay period at Transcend.  In fact, there was even an article about her and about 5 other transcriptionists supposedly "invaluable" to their MTSOs in one of those AHDI journals. How do you suppose she was doing over 40,000 lines in 10 working days per pay period?   I don't see how it would be possible to consistently edit 500 or more lines an hour every day on that Beyond Text platform that Transc ...

Lines Per Pay Period.... Advice

I have read a lot of talk here lately about lines per 2 week pay period. Now, I don't work full time, but even if I did, I just don't get this. I type relatively fast - 45 to 50 wpm, I have the same docs every day so I have a lot of auto words built up. How does anyone do this? What hours do you work? How fast do you type? Would really love to hear some deta ...
