First off, thanks for letting me vent because here it comes......why oh why can't I just work and stay working in this darn MT field. I've been doing this for 10 years and I keep winding up in this exact same spot. I have continuously worked for more than 1 MT company at a time and there have been a number of times I have had to work a 3rd MT job just to pay the bills, ya' know the basics. I will NEVER understand how these lame MT "scam" schools can even remotely say with a straight face that an MT can earn $60,000 a year. I say, "Show me da' money." Why have I not even remotely come close to earning $30,000 a year in the 10 years that I've been doing this line of work? Well, pretty simple. I get hired to work an account and a year or 2 into the account the contract is up and they go some place usually cheaper. I then get a new account or another new job because now I have no work and find that my nice new account is lame and doesn't have enough work, and the vicious cycle continues. I always have to have a back up 2nd MT job going, because I know eventually my nice full-time MT account will dry up and go some place new that offers rose-colored glasses for its cheap MT services. I wish I could get out of this field, I really do, but.......I really enjoy it. I used to be all into the AHDI local chapters and served on the Board of Directors as the secretary for a few years, until it got to be just too expensive for me to pay dues and pay for meetings, hotels, gas, etc. What's the point? It hasn't gotten me any further ahead. I did land a couple jobs through networking, but guess what.....those jobs and accounts dried up too. Both with little time to find another job before the work got pulled out from under us. Over it. I'm a beat down MT with 2 jobs.....2 jobs......and here I am again looking for work, because I have AGAIN no work to do this morning, and that my friend is why I'm a FrustratedMT.

I'm very frustrated, angry, and more depressed than I have ever been in my life. I had done MT for nearly 30 years and lost an office job I had for 24 years that I made enough to live on pretty well and was laid off. I then went to a company that I was so stressed and that made me ill I finally quit only to find another MT job that lasted for almost two months and then just recently had one that lasted three months and went to EMR. I tried a non-medical transcription job yesterday and just tore my hair out. From the first word, I could not understand what they were saying. About all I typed were blanks in a telephone conversation and I know I will not keep this one either. I don't want to live anymore if I can't work. I have prayed and prayed for help and all I get is nothing. I have put a great effort into my work and it is not enough for these companies. They want a super human to do their jobs for so little pay. I have had it too and think my life is over at 67 years of age with SS that does not even come close to paying bills. I don't feel there is anything left for me to do in this life so I'm ready to go anytime now.

I'm 67 too, and I certainly understand your frustration. First of all what jumped out at me was your depression. You can try to do something about that right off and I hope you are, i.e. seeing a counselor, a minister, someone. Getting help with your depression could help you see things a little differently and give you some energy to keep looking for work and maybe getting a different perspective on things. Maybe you have lots of family, friends...I just know for me I live alone and struggle daily with telling myself to get out there and socialize, that what I need first is spending time with others, helping others, getting out of my own way - and believe me, I'm having a hard time getting going but I know it's the first thing I need to do. Don't give up, and I will be thinking of you.

I can't afford counselors. There is one here in town that could never give me an answer. My family has practically disowned me and doesn't care. I live in Colorado and I used to be able to get out and enjoy the outdoors here but all that has changed. I am worn out from this terrible job I just took, 18 minutes and only 200 lines at 6-1/2 cpl. I hate this non-medical transcription job. Sorry. I do volunteer once a week and help with a guitar class for kids but it's not enough and I don't want to volunteer for anything else. You see, it has been four years since I lost my office job and not anything good since then. The pay stinks. There is no minister and my friends all have their problems so I don't like to tell them mine. We are in a depression in this country that is going on forever. No hope. Thanks for your kind words, I wish to lived near me, we could comfort each other.

Work for Nuance and MModal. Both. Same time. They have all the work and what they dont have now, they will eventually. Otherwise, get out.

Do they want anything but acute care? I know I can do it but have no experience. I have worked in MT so long that I know I can type it.

MModal has different tiers - downtime

If you don't have acute care experience you may be placed in a lower tier and then won't get, say for instance, operative reports.

Just apply, take test and see what you can do - then

If you get an interview, tell them you have not done acute care, but that is all you want to do, so tell them to give you an account with acute care. Then work your butt off and listen to all feedback. Hopefully it works.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm glad the question was asked about M-Modal and Nuance. I see their job postings all the time but like the Anon I lack acute care but have 10 years of multispeciality with about 5+ years of radiology under my belt. I have often been tempted to apply but figured without the acute care experience I wouldn't get hired. I know I could do if given the chance. I just need to get my foot in the door and given the chance. In the end I really do love doing transcription but have these periods of utter frustration with the lack of job security or a consistent paycheck. Thank you again for the advice. Maybe I will send in the resume to both places and see what happens. :-)

....I think M*Modal might hire you for that. You will have to check, of course; but when my company was bought out by M*Modal, I remember the guy from M*Modal saying (in our conference call) that they had tons of Radiology work. This was about 6-7 months ago now, though. Still, wouldn't hurt to find out! Of course, many would never recommend working for M*Modal, no matter what; but maybe someone who does Rad for them (I don't) can comment here for you. Good luck.

Some rad accounts have plenty. I rarely run out of work. It is also according to which region you get in also. Give the test a shot and see what they offer you. I make enough to make my bills and buy groceries and live on and don't run out completely before the next payday. I am also able to send the grandkids $20 for their birthdays. That is all that matters to me. Good luck!

This is to those MTs who do next to nothing for most of the pay period and then the last 2 days decide to make up all of their lines. It really screws those of who show up every day and work our full day. I've spent more time hitting the "get next job" today than I've transcribed lines. Low and no work, multiple accounts. Lucky I got what I did this last payperiod. However, early this year I got a few bucks in MUP and was told to bring my statistics up or else. Why are we still having to jump through hoops -- highlight and skip marker for more than 5 words, etc. - for the ASR? Hasn't it had time to "learn" all it is going to learn? It would be so much easier just to delete the crap we can't use and have to re-do instead of all the red skip markers, etc. Anybody been told that we can just DELETE and not SKIP yet? ...

I was just offered and accepted a position with Nuance and am supposed to start sometime this week (was supposed to get the new hire PW on Friday, but it did not arrive, hoping it will tomorrow for I really need to start working again..sigh). Well, 18 year employee here. (PT for 10 years) came from TL which was GREAT company and then MQ bought out. I have very chronic illnesses that I absolutely cannot go and get an outside the home job. I, as stated, don't have a real problem with FTR, because frankly all of us MT/MEs who have done this job for any length of time should be doing our work correctly anyway. I've noticed this repeatedly over the last several pay periods, particularly with one of my accounts, since Transcend took over. The last day (or two) of the pay period, there is no work - 0 for every work type! Next day, work levels back to normal. Is this due to off-shoring, account hogging to get that last pay check boost...? Or do patients just stop showing up at the hospital on the 15th of every month?...right. ...

I noticed a new hired is well cherry picking her way thru our ques but is it possible she can type 20000 lines in a 10 day work week - this is double any of us can do? We use express scribe could she be using some kind of speech to text program to get to this number. Her report counts are high and we all work on same accounts but produce at least half of what she does in the same amount of hours. I truly need help understanding this? ...

Hey, about 3 years ago there was an MLS who did at least 40,000 lines per 2-week pay period at Transcend. In fact, there was even an article about her and about 5 other transcriptionists supposedly "invaluable" to their MTSOs in one of those AHDI journals. How do you suppose she was doing over 40,000 lines in 10 working days per pay period? I don't see how it would be possible to consistently edit 500 or more lines an hour every day on that Beyond Text platform that Transc ...

I have read a lot of talk here lately about lines per 2 week pay period. I see a lot of you saying you can easily get 25,000 lines per pp, some say 40,000 lines per pp. I estimate I can get about 4,000. Now, I don't work full time, but even if I did, I just don't get this. I type relatively fast - 45 to 50 wpm, I have the same docs every day so I have a lot of auto words built up.
