thinking about taking my CMT test - justme

Posted: Sep 29, 2010

Hi All!  I am actually thinking about taking my CMT test.  I have thought about ioff and on a lot over the years.  I have 13 years experience in 3 different hospitals and 3 different well known transcription companies (I know I change jobs a lot), but often times working 2 jobs at once.  I know the AAMT Book well.  Despite my experience, I'm still afraid I won't pass the test.  I have known so, so many transcriptionists over the years and not a one of them have their CMT or attempted the test.  There were many that were more skilled/experienced than me.  I find this very odd - No CMTs.  Why is this?  Is the test too difficult? Is it not worth it?  Companies/hospitals don't care?  Is it because we're a bunch of working moms who are too overwhelmed as is to put in more energy and ambition into our careers?  Do we think lowly of ourselves?  Do we all lack confidence as in my case and not even consider taking the test?  I don't know.  I do know that if I had my CMT, I would no longer be afraid to speak up to these transcription companies and hospitals.  My supervisers/QA don't even know the AAMT Book of style.  I don't speak up and show them my skills many times because as I have learned they become insulted - okay real ticked off.  So, basically I'm paid a low wage to sit and look stupid all the time.  When they decide to implement new things, I know are going to create a mess, they don't ask my input and clearly do not want to hear helpful suggestions.  Hmmm...I'm paid a low wage to be quiet and look stupid...I do that quite well - a true professional at it.  However, 13 years ago I wanted a career - not a low paying job.  If I wanted a low paying pay job, I would at least do something  I thoroughly enjoy.  Maybe I would see other human beings, maybe I would have a good laugh throughout the day, maybe my son would see me somewhere else besides my office?  Damn, I sacrifice a lot for this "job"; it ought to be a career!  So, if I sacrifice a bit more to study and take the test, will I simply be wasting more time or will I gain the confidence to speak up on issues, stand up for myself and be worthy of an income that is more than "I'm making it."  I'm tired of just being happy I can pay all the bills....There has to be more to life than just that...I would appreciate anyone's input - good and bad.  Is the test really that difficult? I still have to look up new stuff on a daily basis.  I'm limited in some specialities like pathology.  I'm capable of doing any type of report, letter, clinic note, etc., but I still have to occasionally check the internet on a few things throughout the day.  Taking the test, I'm sure I won't have any references to refer to....

Hi justme, to answer your question about becoming a CMT (sm) - SillyMT

I will tell you that I have 25 years experience and I am not a CMT, nor do I plan on becoming one. My reasons are many but I guess the main reasonings are because for the amount of studying that you have to do, the travel to take the test, time to take the test, time away from my family/job and the cost to maintain the certification, the small amount that some (not all) MTSOs are willing to pay for that certification is just not worth it. The most that I have ever seen offered was one penny more a line and again, because of the reasons above, to me it is just not worth it.

I am sure that you will get better answers than mine from MTs who have been and who are CMTs. Whatever you decide though, I wish you the best of luck!

not only no references to use, but no spellcheck - and no footpedal

I am not a CMT, have 14 years experience, and also thought about doing it.

I have never done radiology or pathology, but have acute care for all 14 years.

I was told that it was an extremely hard test, and that if you do not pass, you have to repay the entire amount to take again. That scares me because I am a horrible test taker, always have been.

To get out of school, I could not pass the typing test because my hands were shaking too bad. The teacher knew I could type when not taking tests, she felt so sorry for me and passed me anyway.

Still.... tests freak me out and hard ones even worse!

I would love to hear from someone just how hard it really is.

It sounds like you really want to take it, and I would do it if that's how you feel. Do it for yourself. There are CMT prep courses online from M-TEC, TRSI, and Career Step. I was certified from 2001-2004. I took the test when it was a two-parter, and I only had 3 years of hospital transcription experience, and I passed. I didn't keep up with my CEU'S because the clinic I work in now doesn't care one way or another (they don't reimburse for it or pay higher wage for CMT), but I am studying to take it again anyway within the next couple of months just for self-satisfaction and the possibility of a better opportunity coming my way. You just never know.

Little interest in past because of little benefit, outweighed by - Anon.

both cost and bother, so like most I didn't bother. More recently some companies have been preferring to see CMT on the applications and some even pay a bit more. Given the uncertain times, and seeing my company boasting of its CMTs, I finally decided to go ahead and get it for my resume.

Anybody with extensive experience should find the medical part pretty easy. The grammar part could be a surprise; it is designed to be difficult for people who've never gotten a really good grasp on written English. So a brush-up with the sort of fascinated attention most of us didn't give it in high school will be in order for some. :)

Many people refuse to take the CMT or to have anything at all to do with AHDI because they are responsible in a major way for the support of offshoring. As a loyal American, I cannot have anything to do with this organization.

CMT and a dollar... - former Webmedxer CMT

...will buy you a cup of coffee.

Thought being a CMT meant my job was secure. Companies like to brag that they have so many CMTs working for them, right?

Still got laid off from Webmedx, "Employer of the Year", a month ago along with others who weren't CMTs. So much for the CMT making a bit of difference.

As for new jobs, you can still look forward to being offered a job as an IC at 7 cents per line whether you're a CMT or not.

Sorry, but am soured on CMT meaning anything more than money in AHDI's pockets.

In the end, all MT jobs will be going to India, anyway, with the dollar always being the bottom line, so it won't matter one bit who is a CMT and who isn't. Accuracy such as what you get employing CMTs now takes a back seat to cost.

Test Taking Question
Jan 29, 2010

Hi.. So I just received an email that I need to take a test in order to get my first job. They are telling me to use my FTP program to log on to the IP address.. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. I have filezilla and also express scribe. Are these the correct programs I should use? Where do I go on there to type in the IP address? Thank you.. Misty3720 ...

Anybody Taking CMT Test? Is It Worth It?
Oct 11, 2010

I am considering it only because I keep taking a pay cut and can't afford it.  I haven't taken it before because it irritates me that it costs almost $200, plus my job can simply be sent to India overnight. I wonder if it is worth the money and the headache.  MQ supposedly will give you a (probably teeny?) raise.  I am an MME and have been stuck doing too much 100% QA, then for regular transcription usually the worst junk jobs from every hospital on the list, usually not ...

How Long After Taking The Test Do They Contact You?
Nov 18, 2010

Took the MQ test, didn't find it to be all that awful, I guess... so how long after you submit it do you find out if you passed or not?  Granted, after spending the last two days on here reading every post I'm scared to death now and really not sure I really want to know, but bottom line, I need to work, and they pay benefits so I guess it's all good and maybe I'll get lucky and if I get hired it won't be all bad.    Anyway, would appreciate any feedback.. ...

Taking Test With No Way To Stop Dictation?
Dec 12, 2013

Just wondering if I am missing something.  I was sent a test by a company to transcribe.  The dictation I guess runs off flash player.  It just takes you to the site and there is only a button to start and stop the dictation.  These are 2 VERY long dictations.  How the heck am I suppose to be able to do that on a timed test when I cannot use a foot pedal.  Are there function keys I am not aware of?  Thanks. ...

I Would Love Some Test-taking Tips.
Mar 27, 2014

I haven't had to test for many years and am out of the loop. I am aware a lot of places have initial grammar, punctuation, and anatomy tests before ever being given a transcription test. I am wondering about the transcription test portion. How do you know when to add a heading or just transcribe verbatim? If an incorrect heading was dictated,do you change the heading to the correct heading or just leave a blank in that space? Are you able to leave notes as to why you changed these things or ...

Taking Test, Foot Pedal Issue - Report Begins Over Every Time I Lift My Foot!
May 27, 2010

I am taking a test for a company and have gotten as far as taking the transcription portion.  I downloaded their file (pedalplugin-win) but whenever I lift my foot off play, the tape rewinds to beginning.  I cannot rewind or FF and autoplay to 0 isn't registering. Why Are We Taking This?
Jun 18, 2012

What the heck is going on here? We're being bought out and paid less than the people cleaning the toilets at the "corportate" offices of the big-three companies. We're scraping by to make one-third of what we used to make. Why? Do you actually believe these companies are charging the hospitals less? We're the only ones getting paid less, and less, and less. The hospitals are getting crappy reports, something they're told can't be helped; there's no other alternat ...

Could They Be Taking Even More Pay
Mar 07, 2014

I checked my pay stubs and, granted, I still was getting production bonus 5-6 months ago, but my pay has decreased so much, like $400-500. Sometimes I wonder what all those "delays" with "uploading the lines" are. Honestly, this company has made me literally into a minimum wage worker. Thanks a lot, Nuance, you will soon get your wish and I will have to subsidize my income with food stamps at this rate. I guess that is your objective, more profits for you, spread the poverty so our taxes are ma ...

Taking More Than 1 Offer
Mar 15, 2010

I have 2 job offers from 2 different companies, but both of these companies are fairly large and have multiple posts with complaints that there is just not enough work for everyone. Would it be possible to take both offers, on the chance that if one doesn't have work the other will? I might be kinda screwed if they both have a lot of work, but it might be worth it to see how both will work out without closing any doors. Has anyone done this before? Is it possible to run 2 companies differen ...

Taking A Poll
Sep 01, 2010

If you get NJA on a very regular basis, reply with what state you are in.  Apparently, some states require pay for downtime, CA I believe being one of them.  I'm not sure of the other states.  Obviously, work can be routed to or away from us at will, and I have a feeling they are choosing MTs from the states that mandate downtime pay over states that don't. ...

Taking The Plunge
Feb 20, 2011

After having been an MT for over half of my life and constantly reading these forums and realizing the shortcomings we are all facing in this industry, I'm taking the plunge. Yesterday my husband and I bought 2 domain names, ordered 500 business cards, my husband is researching MT salaries nationwide, and we're going to start our own MTSO.  An MTSO run by HUMAN BEINGS for HUMAN BEINGS.  A small one, we're looking at probably 20 or less ICs to ensure ample work for every ...

Just An FYI To Everyone About The New Taking Time Off
Dec 03, 2013

without pay we were given (13 days). If you use this for NJA you will forfeit an entire day of the time off without pay, even if it's just 1 hour. The days off are not hourly. They are daily, so if you had 1 hour left in your shift and had NJA and took the time off without pay, 1 entire day of your time off without pay would be used. Looks like MM screwed us again. ...

Think About This Before Taking MM Coding
Mar 12, 2014

If you think the offer from MMoral to become a coder sounds good, think again. If you start the program and don't finish, you have to pay MM for the full cost of training, and no mention was made of how much that is. If you decide to leave MM for a coding job elsewhere, you probably won't even be considered for a job with decent pay because you didn't train through AHIMA and you will have to pay MM for your worthless training if you leave before 2 years. Lastly, if Obamacare ends ...

PTO/Taking Days Off

Has anyone read the rule book here? I tried to once but couldnt read through my tears! I believe I was told we can't take days off unless we have the PTO to cover it? This is going to be a problem. This would use up the measly PTO hours I have and I would have nothing left to take days off this summer, like my birthday. Does anyone else take da ...
