What to charge for simple interview transcription? - Meerkat - (sm)

Posted: Nov 14, 2011

I hope this is the right board to ask this quick question!  If not, please re-direct me.

A friend of mine has a genealogy business, and does Q & A sessions with people (usually elderly, but some not) about their lives, their family history.  She will be needing these interviews transcribed (simple format).  Each interview is about 5 minutes of dictation time, and they're digital files that she will e-mail to me, and I'll e-mail them back.  No printing involved.  I'm going to charge per minute of dictation.  I want to give her a good deal on this, but I also don't want to sell myself short, either.  I need a price we will both be happy with.  I love family histories, so this work will be a nice break from medical transcription.

What are the going rates, high and low, for work such as this?

Thanks for any input you may have for me!

Okay, let me rephrase the question: What would - you charge per/min for EZ clinic notes?

- English-speaking dictator.
- block form, no headers/footers.
- No templates, but simple & straightforward dictation.

I've charged $1.50 per minute of dictation - mthead

for market research interviews in the NY/NJ metro area. I think b/c they were tough (often ESL doctors) the customer got the better end of the deal, but I felt fairly compensated when I had native English speakers.

Thank you for your reply! I've never done a contract - job before, & was clueless as to pricing!

charge either. I think I got the answer off of this site, but it took me a while to find it. Good luck to you -- it sounds like fun!

Recently contacted by a local church pastor to transcribe some sermons for him to make into a booklet form.  (Maybe 3 to 4 hours worth of work or about 160 minutes).  I have never done or charged for general transcription like that and certainly don't want to over charge a church, yet do not want to do it for free either.  They asked me would I want to be paid the same way the hospital pays me?  What are your suggestions?  Thanks in advance.  Forgive me if I pu ...
