Charge for general transcription. Have only ever charged for medical - midwestmt

Posted: Jun 30, 2011

Recently contacted by a local church pastor to transcribe some sermons for him to make into a booklet form.  (Maybe 3 to 4 hours worth of work or about 160 minutes).  I have never done or charged for general transcription like that and certainly don't want to over charge a church, yet do not want to do it for free either.  They asked me would I want to be paid the same way the hospital pays me?  What are your suggestions?  Thanks in advance.  Forgive me if I put this in the wrong category too.

You could charge per sermon - mt

Not sure what the rate should be, though. That would probably be the easiest way to do it. Or you could charge per word since Microsoft Word will do a word count for you.

I charge by the page for general transcription $5/page. Of course it may pay more if you do it by the line.

I charge - sm

1 cent/word for anything that is not medical. Most companies who do general/legal charge 1.5 cents/word and pay the contractor one-half cent/word, which is ridiculous and not in the transcriptionist's best interest, as you don't get paid for spaces.

Hope this helps :)

I do general transcription for a research company doing focus groups. They started me at 1 cent/word 12 years ago, then went to 1.5 cents/word 9 years ago and then 2 cents/word 5 years ago. I actually feel I'm overpaid at 2 cents/word, but they do research and can afford it. ~ I think 1 cent/word is an average of what general transcription is paying right now. I think 1.5 is actually pretty fair for both sides.

Since it is a church though (my hubby is actualy a pastor), you might want to consider 1 cent/word, which is still decent $. Hope this helps.

Side work - What I do

I charge 0.15 to 0.17 per 65-character line, depending if they want it printed or not, which comes out to about $4 a page, double spaced. Like the other person said, Word counts it for you.

You should not charge anything to do - The Work of The Lord

To take money for such service would be a most heathen-like thing to do!

I don't think so - Sue

I don't agree. I don't think she should overcharge, but that is going to take a large chunk of time for her to type those sermons, so she definitely should get paid, just like the office secretary and janitor and others are getting paid.

Teaching Sunday School, Bible Studies, and so forth is more "ministry type service" and that would be different.

IMO - mt2

So what you're saying is that anybody that does the work of the Lord should not be paid? Pastors should work for free? How would you expect them to live? My question is how come the church secretary isn't transcribing those sermons?

Non-medical Transcription - Have No Idea What To Charge
Mar 02, 2011

I have an opportunity to transcribe interviews for the county.  The files will be anywhere from 15 min to hours long, 3 to 4 of these a week, TAT is 1 week.  At the beginning of each interview, the lead interviewer dictates the attendees’ names and reason for participation in the interview.  On each transcription, the person speaking must be identified each time he/she speaks.   Occasionally more than 1 person speaks at a time and that has to be sorted out and identification made of ea ...

General Transcription, IC
Feb 14, 2011

I was contacted today with a potential offer to transcribe general work as an IC.  I have yet to find out out if they pay by the hour or line, their definition of a line, etc.  This is a new concept for me as I've always been a hospital employee.  While surfing posts on this board I learned that I have the power to define my pay and hours, but I would appreciate it if someone could shed more light on transcribing in that aspect.  I would mainly l ...

General Transcription?

I gave up on MT as a career and am working in a different industry.  I've always loved transcribing and writing and I really miss it.  I googled "transcription jobs online" and was surprised at the number of sites that came up.  Some were non-medical, some were both.  I haven't explored them in depth yet.  Just wondering if anyone has gone this route and had any success?  Any good or bad names to share?  Feel free to PM me if they can't be mentio ...

Rate For General Transcription?
Nov 18, 2009

Is it the same 10 cents per line as medical?  I am out of work right now with over 2 years of experience.  I have been checking out freelance websites, and the pay seems pretty low.  It is sometimes described as dollar amount per audio hour or as an hourly rate.  They list the hourly rate as about $5 an hour or less.  Is it because the work would be easy?  Should I bid for a job and offer 10 cents a line?   I need some work so badly I just don't know what ...

Fox/general Transcriptionists (general Question)
Aug 17, 2012

If you do general transcription, can you recommend a good (free or low cost) transcription program for audio files?  I tried InqScribe and it works okay, but I don't like that they make you use their built-in word processing program that doesn't have any text expanders. I use Express Scribe.  Do they have a way to transcribe videos?  (I think it has something called Prism video, but I never figured out how to use it).  Thanks. ...
