What to charge for general transcription? - CTMT

Posted: Jul 16, 2012

Hi all, I have been offered a general transcription job today and they will be calling me with a pay rate. I have no idea what is fair pay for this kind of work, as I have always worked in medical transcription. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Is it just a temporary position? - just a project for them?

I have done that before, and I charged 0.15 per line. Look up on the internet what secretarial-type companies in your area charge, and you will see. They usually charge by the minute of transcription. I looked at what they were charging, and I thought 0.15 was a fair rate, which was approximately $4.00 a page, and they were thrilled with it.

Not sure if temporary, but will take whatever I can get, I am a former DMTer out of work - CTMT

thanks for some direction, so when they tell me what they are paying or ask me what I charge, i can have something. I will look up locally as well. Thanks

What do you think? I am so clueless. - CTMT

.75/min of run time. So for example if you type up a 30 minute interview you would get paid $22.50.

Depends on what type of general transcription - - sm

Is it meetings? One-on-one interviews? Multispeaker focus groups? Municipality hearings? Product surveys? Post-media? Entertainment? Audio quality? Amount of speakers? Time stamp vs. not? If so, how often in the transcript? Tagging of the speakers? The pay varies A LOT with each of these...

Wow! - CTMT

I never realized all those made a difference. It is interviews, sometimes multispeakers, and time stamp throughout the transcripts(which is a pain).

Good point. - -other poster

The work I did was focus groups. I did not have to identify the speakers. It was pretty easy to hear. I told them it takes about 3x as long as the recording is to finish it, and I worked on it when I finished with my other job. I used my own computer of course. Let me know if you need any more help.

I will, thank you - CTMT

I plan on still getting a medical transcription/editor job. Never want to have just one job again and be let go with no notice like at ScribeRight recently. I am also going back to school for medical coding, gradually working on getting out of MT'ing.

When you think about it, medical should be more than general - just me

It takes more knowledge and training to transcribe medical transcription, so why do we transcribe this at a cheaper rate than general transcription (other than it is more straight typing and not able to use text expanders as much)? Strange....

Medical is mainly ... medical. General can be anything. - Maggie May

You can study up and learn a lot about medicine, until you're prepared for just about anything. But with general, you never know what you're going to get, and it might be a topic you know absolutely nothing about, which could require a lot more research than what you would normally do with MT (if you know your stuff, anyway). But MTs are definitely underpaid!

I have done several different types of general transcription. I always charged the same, but maybe should have charged more. I have done military, business minutes, medical county minutes, etc. Good luck with your endeavors. If you can do the same kind all of the time it would be easier.
The worst thing about doing minutes was knowing who made the motions - ha!

Charge For General Transcription. Have Only Ever Charged For Medical
Jun 30, 2011

Recently contacted by a local church pastor to transcribe some sermons for him to make into a booklet form.  (Maybe 3 to 4 hours worth of work or about 160 minutes).  I have never done or charged for general transcription like that and certainly don't want to over charge a church, yet do not want to do it for free either.  They asked me would I want to be paid the same way the hospital pays me?  What are your suggestions?  Thanks in advance.  Forgive me if I pu ...

General Transcription, IC
Feb 14, 2011

I was contacted today with a potential offer to transcribe general work as an IC.  I have yet to find out out if they pay by the hour or line, their definition of a line, etc.  This is a new concept for me as I've always been a hospital employee.  While surfing posts on this board I learned that I have the power to define my pay and hours, but I would appreciate it if someone could shed more light on transcribing in that aspect.  I would mainly l ...

Anyone been doing general transcription for a while? How long should 30 minutes of audio (interviewer and Interviewee) with time stamps take? General Transcription?
Jan 09, 2015

I gave up on MT as a career and am working in a different industry.  I've always loved transcribing and writing and I really miss it.  I googled "transcription jobs online" and was surprised at the number of sites that came up.  Some were non-medical, some were both.  I haven't explored them in depth yet.  Just wondering if anyone has gone this route and had any success?  Any good or bad names to share?  Feel free to PM me if they can't be mentio ...

Rate For General Transcription?
Nov 18, 2009

Is it the same 10 cents per line as medical?  I am out of work right now with over 2 years of experience.  I have been checking out freelance websites, and the pay seems pretty low.  It is sometimes described as dollar amount per audio hour or as an hourly rate.  They list the hourly rate as about $5 an hour or less.  Is it because the work would be easy?  Should I bid for a job and offer 10 cents a line?   I need some work so badly I just don't know what ...

Non-medical Transcription - Have No Idea What To Charge
Mar 02, 2011

I have an opportunity to transcribe interviews for the county.  The files will be anywhere from 15 min to hours long, 3 to 4 of these a week, TAT is 1 week.  At the beginning of each interview, the lead interviewer dictates the attendees’ names and reason for participation in the interview.  On each transcription, the person speaking must be identified each time he/she speaks.   Occasionally more than 1 person speaks at a time and that has to be sorted out and identification made of ea ...

Fox/general Transcriptionists (general Question)
Aug 17, 2012

If you do general transcription, can you recommend a good (free or low cost) transcription program for audio files?  I tried InqScribe and it works okay, but I don't like that they make you use their built-in word processing program that doesn't have any text expanders. I use Express Scribe.  Do they have a way to transcribe videos?  (I think it has something called Prism video, but I never figured out how to use it).  Thanks. ...

I have been reading the messages in this forum regularly for the past few days and weeks.  I am shocked at the number of unhappy people in our profession.  If you hate your jobs so much, apply for a student loan and go back to school, it will create jobs for the ones who want to transcribe and can't find them now.  I've been at my current MT job for 16 years and have worked on-site and at home, I am paid very well for what I do.  If I bitched to my boss every t ...

Have you ever noticed than when a dictator tries to adopt a "conversational" style of dictating, that it is very hard to try and figure out what's being said?  They start and stop several times so that you can't remember what the original line of dictation was, plus they add "you know" every other sentence.  I DON'T KNOW!!!!!  My account is a verbatim one and so I figure out as near as I can what he's saying and then send it through.  ...

General UE Question.

I'm considering a job through a government entity--a county health department.  Does anyone here know if one gets laid off from a government job if they can file for unemployment, or are gov't entities exempt from that?  I had an interview, and they offered up-front that their intention is that the job is permanent, but, of course, they couldn't guarantee against future cut-backs.  This made me start to wonder, with all the budget woes in the gov't arena....wou ...
