Related lines of work - RS

Posted: Aug 27, 2013

I've been in healthcare documentation for over 7 years. The well is drying up, it seems that almost nobody is hiring, and the ones that are want the whole class to be as good as the valedictorian, if you know what I mean (and the medical industry as a whole seems bound and determined to destroy employee rights). Can my experience get me something in legal transcription or something else more stable? I can't afford more schooling, I got bills to pay.

Not true that no one is hiring. Lots are hiring... - but no one is PAYING.

I have all the work I want. Of course, it's crappy work, and of course I'm paid next to nothing for the years of experience that I call into play when resolving subtle ambiguities, to say nothing of literally interpreting the inaccurate way in which ESL dictators express themselves, just in order to produce an accurate medical document.

I have no idea what prevents all of us from simply walking off the job, and I do guarantee you that it would change things in this industry if we did.

Does it have to be a "related" line of work? - Get trained in something else - and get out.

The fact is, NO ONE should be doing this work, given its demands, for the compensation that's being paid by the scumbag MTSO's, who in turn are AFRAID to demand proper compensation from their CLIENTS.

Did you know that even in India they're starting to demand higher pay rates for medical transcription?

The fact is, this is not a TYPING JOB; it is a KNOWLEDGE JOB, and what that means, people, is that IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE WHETHER SPEECH RECOGNITION COMES INTO PLAY OR NOT. IT TAKES AS MUCH KNOWLEDGE TO JUDGE A LINE OF TEXT TO BE CORRECT AS IT DOES TO JUDGE THAT IT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED.

God, I wish this field wasn't dominated by women. If it were dominated by men, you wouldn't see this crap going on, I gare-on-tee it.

About these companies being happy to take the work from women. I spoke to a court reporter recently and she said, "Thank goodness men were the first court reporters," meaning that court reporters were actually valued as skilled workers (not just "typists"!) and their jobs were not being offshored. However, in both San Diego and Los Angeles counties, reporters were being laid off because of "budget concerns." It should be noted that both counties had enough budget to build new buildings. Apparently in San Diego, the courts realized that some court reporters were needed and re-hired some.

I'm playing with the idea of captioning. I subscribed to the NCRA magazine to get familiar with online schools, terminology, etc. I have enrolled in a 9-month pharmacy tech course to get a "quick" entry into another field of work.

38 years as MT, my experience is most require schooling and/or - at least 1 yr experience. NM

MOT Related To Bankruptcy?
May 12, 2015

It's been my experience that when there's a deluge of work all at once to be finished up, it's because the hospital/company is about to switch gears, with the MT suffering the most. I'm not financial savvy, but I wonder if this latest MOT stuff is related to the recent bankruptcy, that possibly the reserve money to pay the MTs is running out, so the company is about to go under or sell out. Something's up for sure. ...

MQ Has To SEVERELY Cut Employee-related Costs And
Mar 22, 2010

There are severe legal ramifications if you put in writing that you agree to this cost cutting/salary control maneuvering by MQ. Essentially they are getting us to let them off the hook with these "ESSAYS." Please note on the email it states: "All entries become the property of MQ and may be used in future communications." Also, not to be outdone by their own salary slashing FTR program, they have also taken more time/money away from us as these are to be done on OUR O ...

Need To Vent (computer Chair Related)
Apr 27, 2011

My computer chair tore up, so I needed to get a new one. I tried some out at the store and got a cushy one. After I put it together and sat in it for 30 minutes, I had severe pain. It felt like my whole body went numb and tingly. So I had to take it back. I got a second chair and can tell it's not going to be comfortable and that I will need to take it back. I'm sick, tired, and frustrated about this. Not at the stores or the people that work there, because it's not their fault ( ...

What Is Your Work-related New Year's Resolution?
Dec 19, 2011

I mean this post in all ernest, I am genuinely interested in hearing about those things that you might do differently next year to make things better than this year. I'll go first. 1. I plan to stay more focused on my work instead of checking in here, so much. I plan to accomplish this by removing my MTStars icon from my toolbar, thus removing my temptation to click on it and navigate here so many times during the day. I sat down the other day and analyzed how ...

Suggestion To Aid With Income-related Discussions.
Aug 10, 2012

I've noticed that we need some sort of standard reference or metric to use when we talk about income-related issues, and this metric should not merely reference dollars (or cents), but should relate this to a unit of time. At the end of the day, it's how much you earned per unit of time that really matters, and this the only sort of metric that takes into account all of the variables that a mere monetary reference such as "line rate" does not. The line rate pa ...

QCs, Save Your Grid-related Emails
May 20, 2015

Is It True That FOCUS, Only Counts Half Of Your Lines When Calculating VR Lines?
Jan 30, 2012

if you make 4 cents per line at 1000 lines a day, they really calculate it at 500 lines per day x 4 cents, making it really 2 cents per line for the full 1000. I heard this, and I am really interested in knowing if it is true. ...

Told Nuance Was Overcharging For Lines, Now Lines Drastically Reduced
May 02, 2012

My main account was a good one, and the lines were very good, mostly ER work. I have been on this account for over a year and a half now. We recently received an e-mail stating that Nuance had discovered that the line count was charging incorrectly, as instituted by them, and they had been crediting us with MORE lines than we were actually doing and overcharging the client. Now get this, they informed us that they would not make US pay it back, for their mistake, but that our new lines would re ...

Tax Debt Related To Independenct Contractor Status
Jan 02, 2014

I wonder if anyone else has gotten her/himself into a predicament like mine. Instead of paying estimated quarterly taxes, I've been trying to pay a lump sum when tax time comes on Apr. 15 each year. It's a bad situation because I never have the amount that's due to pay. I've been on an monthly installment plan for 3 years, and I never miss a payment or pay late. At this point, I still owe for most of 2011 and all of 2012. I also have a full time ...

TransTech Lines - Required Hours But Are Short Lines?
Jun 10, 2011

What do you do when you have the required hours but are short lines? I got an email that I need to "make plans to have my shortage made up." The only problem is that I'm up to date with my hours for the pay period so far. The other problem is that I have plans Saturday night and Sunday (both being my scheduled time off) that don't include TransTech. It's getting harder and harder to defend this company when they can't hold up their end of the agreement and continually ...

TransTech Lines - How Many Lines Do You Average During The Day/week?

TransTech Lines - How Many Lines Do You Average Per Day
Jul 13, 2011

How many lines do you average per day - VR and traditional? I know it's been VERY slow lately, but when things are going well, how many lines do you normally get? I'm trying to figure out where the average numbers are. For me, I do about 350 trad and about 1400 VR in 8 hours. Well, my timesheet says 8 hours, but my clock says that number MAY(!) be a little higher. Again, these are numbers I pull when things are going well and I'm not waiting for work to download. 150 Lines Per Hr Or ASR 350?
Sep 09, 2011

so I get my offer from MedQuist today after they acquired AllType. In order to qualify for benefits, I have to type 150 lines per hr or do voice recognition editing at 350 per hr. I don't know if I can do this. On a good account, no problem. But ASR on accounts I have been doing are ridiculous, so many random errors, no way you can skim through them. Any body out there that consistently gets these line counts every week without working more than 39 hrs per week ...
