Rate of pay for entry in to an EHR - Kari

Posted: Dec 30, 2011

I have been working for a doc's office doing traditional transcription for a couple of years and I have charged a per line fee for my service.  I have recently been approaced by another doc's office to work with their EHR.  A very small amount of the work is actually transcribing.  Most of it will be point-and-click from a list of selections based on the doc's dictation.  I have no idea how much to charge for this kind of work.  Does anyone have any idea what the going rate is?

EHR Pay - Jane

I'm in the same boat as you, Kari. I also do traditional transcription, and my 7 doctor group is looking into EHR (the point-and-click type as well). It would be nice to get a ballpark figure on what the rate should be.

not sure how I would figure that out, but start high. You may be the pioneer and breaking new ground for the rest of us! Maybe so much per report? Maybe so much per click--if there is some way to keep track. Maybe so much per hour. If possible, not lock yourself into anything until you have done it for a while and can get into a rhythm and see what works best. Trial and error?

But please keep us posted!

Sounds like scribing. They get paid usually $9-12/hour. I've never heard of them getting paid per report.

Pretty sure point and click won't need an MT at all... - Justabouthadit

A friend of mine (also an MT) has a daughter who is a family practice doc. She told me about how her daughter was all excited about the point-and-click transcription program she had recently bought not needing anyone but herself to produce reports. I also know of two large cardiology services that I used to work for who now employ no MTs for most of their transcription (all point-and-click with a little VR), though they do dictate letters sometimes to their secretaries still.

Local office here pays $18 an hour - for 5 doctors

lucky - our big hospital pays $11/hr - nm

Sounds like your hospital is paying for data entry and the - docs are paying for a higher skill level.

The docs probably realized they simply couldn't afford to use their time, or that of other support staff, to answer medical language questions for a data entry clerk with less medical experience.

I'm in CA.

EHR pay rate - Anne

I think that this new development in the way some MTs and/or others will do work using point-and-click is a great opportunity to move away from the per line pay back to the hour pay or project pay. Before any MT even considers charging per line, think about what that has actually done over the years to pay rates in the industry. In years past, it was painfully obvious how it was a 'race to the bottom' with everyone undercutting each other and justifying it by stating that they were 'better' or whatever, which was just crazy. It seemed as though most MTs didn't even respect each other enough as 'professionals' to abide by the usual and customary pay and just kept undercutting and selling their soul to the lowest bidder. Before starting down the slippery slope of piecemeal pay for point-and-click work, step back and analyze the whole picture of what the MT industry was, what happened, and what it has become. I say respect the work and the worker, re-evaluate the way you want to be paid.

EHR pay - not typing away

Lost a big account to this and now they are paying us 4.00 a report to fill in what the doc has decided to dictate. Length of dictation does not matter.

Entry Level Pay
Jun 10, 2011

Hi all, Just a quick question.  In all your years of experience, what would you think would be a fair starting pay (hourly please) at a smaller acute care hospital doing varied types of jobs?  I do a lot of typing for the actual hospital, the two clinics (one inside the hospital and our satellite clinic in another town) and physical therapy.   I do alot of transcription but I also have a lot of other medical records duties as well that I have to balance.  I do ...

Data Entry
Apr 14, 2014

I applied for a data entry job today after being unemployed for nearly 3-1/2 months. I can't seem to find anything I think I could start out doing after being home over the years. It seems data entry would fit for me. Getting back out there is hard. Depression has taken over, but I'm trying to manage without medication. Most days, I would like to go to bed and stay, but haven't up until this point. Anyway, thanks for listening to me vent. I pray I will at least get to interview, ...

Okay, here's the situation I am in. I graduated school in 2008, but i got hired before I even graduated and I have been transcribing IC for a local family practice for 3 years. Data Entry Or Medical Transcription?
May 13, 2011

It seems that more and more companies, including some hospitals, are paying per line but then expecting you to do data entry, which of course you are NOT paid for. Just a few examples: Acute care on Dictaphone ExText/Word Client -- faxing, etc. McKisson -- Looking up and changing orders for radiographic studies Rad job posted here -- Entering patient demographics If an employer expects me to sit there and do data entry -- which has NO shortcuts -- IN ADDITION TO transcibing, then they' ...

A Question About Data Entry Skills-sm
Mar 26, 2012

I am looking for work as an Mt and not having any luck.  Today, I searched the job service board and found a cool job.  It is an IC position with flexible hours and very good pay.  It is collecting data for the county/township and entering it into a lap top.  They want you to be ableto enter 7000 or more strokes per hour.  I meet all the qualifications except this which, of course, is "key" to the job.  I know nothing of data entry but I hate to pass on the opportun ...

During a lull in my workload (Happy New Year!), I googled Wiki's take on our profession.  I have to say I'm impressed with the description--pretty much every aspect of the evolution of medical transcription is covered, even the negative turn of events (VR, pay cuts, etc.) in recent years with regard to us MTs being unappreciated-and underpaid.  Thought you guys might want to check it out if you haven't already. ...

Apr 20, 2010

I saw this one on the Job Seeker board (http://forum.mtstars.com/223201.html) and was wondering if anyone responded to it yet. On some levels, it seems legit...but then on other hand it seems like a scam because it keeps talking about their "database compiler software," and I keep thinking about those companies that'll hire you to work for them but in order for you to make "real money" you'd have to buy their software. I know there's plenty of free compiler software on the net, ...
