Wikipedia entry for medical transcription - interesting

Posted: Jan 01, 2013

During a lull in my workload (Happy New Year!), I googled Wiki's take on our profession.  I have to say I'm impressed with the description--pretty much every aspect of the evolution of medical transcription is covered, even the negative turn of events (VR, pay cuts, etc.) in recent years with regard to us MTs being unappreciated-and underpaid.  Thought you guys might want to check it out if you haven't already.

I happened to do likewise a couple of weeks ago and had exactly the same reaction. Someone did a bang-up job there!

Anybody can add an entry to Wikipedia. There is no guarantee that anything is accurate or true. I have gone back to school, and we are told repeatedly never to use Wikipedia as a source.

True enough, but in this case Wiki is accurate. NM - anon

Because it is what you want to believe. That doesn't mean an objective person would believe it.
No one "wants" to believe it, it is simply factual. - anon

Anyone who is still dreamy-eyed about MT being a great job and a way to make $60K a year should consider seeking out the help of a well-trained psychiatrist for assistance with delusional thinking.

I would love the industry to be all sunshine and roses, but it simply is not.

What would motivate someone to seek out the Wikipedia entry for something as mundane as medical transcription for the purpose of disseminating false or overly-subjective information? What would be the payoff?

Everybody knows by now that you can't cite Wikipedia as a scholarly source, but for casual use, I've found it to be generally reliable.
Right; just because not everything on the site is reliable - sm

Doesn't mean everything is unreliable. Hope I said that right?

Yes, but we MTs are telling you this article is spot on. - nm

For scholarly purposes, Wikipedia is usually not appropriate. USUALLY, but not always. You might need to reference it for a paper comparing, say, the content of Wiki to that of published literature.

There is nothing inherently wrong with WIki and its accuracy has improved over time. For my purposes, Wiki is one of the best places to find accurate information. It appears there well before it appears anywhere else and it is quite well-rounded. It is especially good for overviews and summaries.

Your school is probably trying to teach you to evaluate the appropriateness of information and sources. Critical thinking is crucial, but don't let a teacher or school's outdated thinking cause your own mind to snap shut.

Certainly you should not cite Wiki if they object, but feel free to use it for your own purposes. Learn to evaluate the accuracy of what you read on its own term, no matter where you find it.

Wiki - what

[ In Reply To ..]
My comp professor a couple of years ago told me that yes, Wikipedia is not a verifiable, scholarly source, but it is a great starting point that leads to verifiable sources. If I cannot find something verified somewhere else, I will go to Wikipedia and scroll down to the bottom of the articles to check out the works cited and go from there.

Now for my experience with medical searches. I've found that my bookmarks of verified and trusted references are just as quick and easy to go to as trying to find something. So I use those first...

Actually, publishing on Wikipedia is not easy to do sm - MO

You have to thoroughly research and include reliable references to anything you post there. My friend ran a Wiki (not work related) and asked me to join her there. I was in over my head and lacked the time to do all that research.

Folks might want to look at this.

Of note, "Articles that do not meet notability guidelines and do not cite reliable published sources are likely to be deleted."

Data Entry Or Medical Transcription?
May 13, 2011

It seems that more and more companies, including some hospitals, are paying per line but then expecting you to do data entry, which of course you are NOT paid for. Just a few examples: Acute care on Dictaphone ExText/Word Client -- faxing, etc. McKisson -- Looking up and changing orders for radiographic studies Rad job posted here -- Entering patient demographics If an employer expects me to sit there and do data entry -- which has NO shortcuts -- IN ADDITION TO transcibing, then they' ...

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?

U.S. Transcription Non Medical
Sep 01, 2011

I answered an ad for U.S. Transcription posted on MT Jobs, was asked to test, and within an hour of submitting my test I was offered a job.  After my heart came down from a happy dance at an actual job offer, I found I really have some things to think about before I say yes. This would be for 2nd shift, non-medical transcription at 0.06/cpl for straight transcription, 0.03/cpl if a company provided template is used.  I suppose I need to ask what my expected production would be before ...

I'm a 2011 MT grad who posted not long ago looking for advice.  While googling MT companies to apply to, I found some non-medical transcription services, namely one that transcribes dialogue from a video for production/entertainment companies.  This site had instructions and a download to take the test.  What the heck, I'm going to take it and see what happens.  Since MT is practically a dead-end career, I've been trying to come up with ther ways to utilize my ...

I quit a job a dozen years ago to jump into the "Work At Home" dream.  I had little money, was quite naive, worked from dark to dark with absolutely no help from the small MTSO, who later ripped me off $5,000.  BUT, I learned. After my first experience with "running out of work", I just found more work.  I got unusually lucky and found a job and was MTing again in a few days. That gig gave me nearly 10 years of working for another small MTSO.  I got busy and made tons of mon ...
