in the MT Stars archives a post entitled "MT's and Unions, and past mistakes:".  This was posted on 11/23/10.

I am contacting various union representatives, among other things.  The most important thing is to get the word out as much as we can about the unfair policies on MT's by various companies.  I know it can seem futile, but I think if enough of us communicate long enough, someone has to listen.  Thanks.

Need to make some noise - as the old rock and roll song goes...it's not hard, the more you do, the easier it gets. Just figure out what your main points are, make a template (hee, hee, call it a "normal") and start spreadin' the word...another pop song, I believe.

The precomputer union/strike form will not work for us. Something - else will, though. We have tremendous new

[ In Reply To ..]
assets today. Our organizers would never need to worry about being thrown off the grounds by company thugs, and we would not need to pay them for living expenses never incurred.

We can be an organized group 3000 miles wide. We can be anonymous. We can be international.

It's extremely important to remember, though, that it's ALL about collective bargaining WITH employers to reach accommodations that will work for everyone. There's been way too much silly talk about strikes. Strikes only occur after failure of collective bargaining, often fail themselves with dreadful consequences, AND would be much less effective for us today. Employers would have no need to truck in strike breakers, and we'd have nowhere to gather with our lead pipes to fight their entry.

But if we had to apply pressure, for instance, would employers have any way of knowing whether a person was sick or slowing down deliberately if it was done as part of a "rolling" slowdown randomly over the country over a period of weeks? During flu and cold season?

However it is done, remote workers like us gathering together effectively to negotiate as a group with employers (how about a whole industry instead?), would have to do it very differently from the past. No doubt much theory has been developing and many observations made about how to act collectively in the information age, and that is going to point a way.

A terrible mistake would be to turn to old, established unions and union thinking. Unions, union organizers, and the ancillary services that have grown up around them are too invested in self-aggrandizement and in the ways of the past. Trying to follow the old ways would be a disaster, but that wouldn't keep us from paying for it through regular dues. There are real compelling reasons why unions are so despised today, even as the right to collective bargaining is still cherished.

Yes, we can indeed become an organized group - Transcriptionists Unite

across the nation. We can and must use the information age to our advantage.

I am spreading the word via the internet, at least one message each day. I am encouraging MT's to make their own list of the things they do not feel are working and need changed.

We've allowed ourselves to be pulled apart. We need to turn that around. The fingerpointing, sniping, and snarling has to stop. Someone once said on here that as long as we're kept in the dark and biting at each other, the MTSO's win, and they're right.

The first thing we need to do regardless is to get organized. That means spreading the word as far and wide as we can about what has happened to our industry. There's a reason this topic keeps popping up over and over again. That's because we know we deserve better, and we still have some fight left in us. Many of us are frustrated, some are downright bitter, but we know we deserve better. I have put too many years into this field and have too many more years to go before retirement to give up without a fight.
It's about the value we contribute, - not about what we deserve. NM

There's one "little" glitch - Bettie_Bgood

[ In Reply To ..]
All they have to do is stop sending work to us. So there we are...with no work. No union lawyers to fight for us in court...guess we'd just have to quit and get a new job...probably not as an MT...we can't assume that there are only positives to organizing online - there are negatives too. Just trying to be realistic.

As far as established unions go, maybe we can bring them new ideas and help them adapt to online environment. So it's a two-way street I feel when it comes to SEIU etc. They need us as much as we need them. But I'm open to starting a brand-new union too. Whatever is most effective - fair pay for quality work. Yes, that's my mantra.
SEIU are THUGS!!! - MT

SEIU members are associated with all kinds of violence, including assaulting members of other unions.. . Since nobody here believes in Googling or doing any research on anything, I did it for you:

I can't believe you guys are even considering associating with those GOONS.
SEIU - to MT - Anonymous

I have been doing some research on my own since there has been so much discussion recently about forming a union for MT. It is true that there has been violence; in fact, it was encouraged. My problem with joining a union is that your dues are funding their political agenda, which means putting their candidates in office and possibly supporting other issues that you may disagree with. Politics don't belong in the workplace but unfortunately that seems to go hand in hand with union membership. The people who think unions hate to off shore work need to talk to the auto workers in Michigan who have lost their jobs and to the former JP Stevens textile workers. The SEIU is in place in quite a few hospitals and many employees have seen better benefits and wages because of it. However, those same facilities have outsourced their transcription services and done other things to cause MTs to lose their jobs. The union was powerless to stop ASR and point and click technology. Thank you for taking the time to research and post the link.

Found this in the Letters to Editor in AdvanceWeb.com. :   I feel compelled to voice my thoughts on the topic of credentialed MTs; the reason being I work with a fantastic group of MTs under my management. We work at a community hospital in a centralized setting; all departments dictate their patient records and we transcribe them. They are highly skilled, productive and accurate and simply the best staff to manage. Here are my thoughts. * Are Credentialed MTs better? If t ...

Good Morning MQ-ville. I was reading a posting below, started yesterday "Whadayaknow" and there were a couple of responses to the posting that I think are worth you reading.
