To All MT/MLS/Editors/QA - please read - anon

This is my yearly ode to all of you during MT WEEK, and I want to again express my humble opinion. For just a few minutes, please put aside your depression and anger at your profession and just take a deep breath and listen to what I have to say.

I am truly awed by what you all do. What other profession would you have to be a medical terminology specialist, pharmacology specialist, English language expert, AND a computer/software expert all in one? There is no other profession like the one you are in, and I take my hat off to ALL of you. You should all be so proud of yourselves. You turn a mumbled, jumbled, inaudible dictation into a beautiful legal document, catching errors that save patients, and cover the dictators’ butts in a court of law. BECAUSE of your knowledge and skills that are not found in any other profession. Really. Just take a breather here and think about this. You guys and gals are AWESOME. You have more knowledge in your little finger than nurses and some doctors!! AND you do this day in and day out, sometimes for less than minimum wage. (Granted, there are some that still make a good living, but not the majority). WHY? Because you love what you do, and no matter how much this industry declines, you would still do it because you LOVE it. I just wanted to share my thoughts with you and wish you all a happy MT week, no matter if you get a nice or lousy gift you are still the best of the best. Happy MT WEEK to each and everyone and may God bless you all for the great service that you do each day.

I've been at this for 35 years and at times have increased stress, or cannot do something with my family, because of obligations I feel for my work. My daughter keeps saying, why not just go work at the grocery store and be stress-free and happy? but for me, I take great satisfaction in doing a specialized work and doing it well. I really don't think I could be happy just doing a job that had no personal satisfaction factor.

The day we suddenly ran out of work in early February was when another MTSO got the account. For my fellow MTs who are suffering from no work from that account, you can go to TTS, who is still hiring for it. Line rate for employees .01 cent less than TT but they pay headers, which TT did not. You can make the same (.01 cent more if you decide to be an IC rather than employee). I've been an MT for many years but I am new to SR editing and I am feeling kind of incompetent. Today it took me 45 minutes to edit 1 note which was 57 lines long I've worked for 5 hours today so far and I have 500 lines. I'm back to editing after a few years away from it and can't believe how bad the software still is. The company I worked for 3 years ago used better software and the drafts were not that bad. Now I'm with a different company using not the best editing software. Not sure what the docs are using, but the VR really does a bad job, even with very good dictators. I started a new client for an MTSO recently. One ESL dictator's H&Ps are so out of order they require a ton of reformatting. This is the order he dictated: History of Present Illness, Past Medical History, Chief Complaint, Plan, PE, Review of Systems, Assessment/Plan. The template has to have formatting changed (bold headings and point size), the guy is very difficult to understand, does not use proper grammar and needs most sentences restructured. Hi There! Just curious if there are any SoftScript editing staff out here. I seem to be struggling a lot with making any money since beginning there. I seem to be getting a lot of training review reports with a lot of blanks and/or acct spec errors, incorrect templates, etc. I also end up running out of work a lot and have to type. Trying to determine the norm for providing free work. I spend more time fixing dictator's demographic errors demographic errors and searching for data that should have been dictated than I do editing. I find it interesting that the specs have changed. I'm happy to see these changes... Doctors names in report verbatim. Headers abbreviated verbatim. (LABS, MEDS, HISTORY, HPI, etc). Copy-Paste requests verbatim. Skip silence (for dictators who have never heard of the pause command. Will dictators finally get the message that mumbled abbreviations with B, C, D, E, P, T, ...

Quit job to take guaranteed hourly paid editor position with MedScribe (FL) 3 weeks ago. Recruiter promised huge volume of work, plenty of backup accounts on hourly pay plus CPL for transcribed lines. Was rushed through paperwork to start immediately, gave only 5 days notice to former employer (burned that bridge) for an hourly paid "sure thing". Never saw hourly pay; only 0.08 CPL for full transcribe acute care, and only to catch up an out-of-TAT acct they knew was bailing ...
