NEW IC LOST AT SEA - please help - sm - greenie

I need advice.  I have just recently gone from employee (for over 35 years) to independent contractor.  This has probably been asked or discussed before, but I never paid any attention to the discussions as it never pertained to me; now I wish I had read the posts.  I feel lost here.  I was hired in the usual manner, and told what my line rate would be.  I understand the part about no taxes taken out, no benefits, etc.  I was also told what hours/days they needed coverage, and that was agreed to.  My problem is that I have prior appointments made, some from almost six months ago, and it seems like they are being difficult about letting me take time off to go to them.  My understanding is that I am able to tell THEM when I am available for work and how much I will produce providing the work is there.  No one has asked me to submit a schedule, etc.  I feel that I was hired to cover THEIR vacation time for other MTs, and that my time is really not my own.  Is this something that is the norm now?  I don’t want to rock the boat, and perhaps that feeling comes from always being an employee and now I’m not.  Any advice/suggestions about this appreciated.  Sorry if this has already been covered.

you can work. I would tell them again you will be out for such and such for you previously arranged appointments.

While the MTSO cannot tell you when to work, they can say we only need you between xx and xx hours. They do not "let" you take time off as an IC, you tell them you will be unavailable for those days you need.

This being said, they can always tell you they no longer require your services if you can't work when they need you. It is sort of like being between a rock and a hard place with a lot of companies using ICs.

I am lucky. My contract as an IC states I will let them know WHEN I can work. They pretty well know my schedule, but if I can't work, I don't.

Send an email to your acct mgr and to as high up as you have access to and let them know on xx date you will be out of your office until xx time.

You run the risk, of course, of them saying then they don't need you, but LEGALLY you dont have to bow to their demands at all.

by deadline, which is 24-hour TAT from the time the doctor dictated it, then I can pretty much do what I want. I took my kids to the water park the other day, middle of the week, but I made sure I had all my previous day's work in first. I does mess up my schedule some when I do it, but it is worth it. I do have to work weekends however as my doctors tend to dictate 7 days a week, not always but I usally have to work at least one day over the weekend but then I can goof off on Monday as if I choose and do that work Tuesday if I want, again as long as I meet TAT. If you were hired for a specific purpose like vacation coverage then the same should apply. If you agreed to their terms then I guess you are stuck, but you can change the playing field by advising them you are unavailable on Wednesday afternoons, or cannot work on Friday, whatever it is. But if you have appts then just give them advance notice (the more the better then follow up with reminders) you will be unavailable those days or the mornings or afternoons of those days. I have found most places will work with you, they just want advance warning. Just don't wait until that morning with 120 mins pending and say, "whoops, I cannot work today, sorry."

Thanks. I told them when I was "hired" and that my appointment was in three months at time of "hiring" - but they said "well, as long as it's not a vacation or anything...". I wanted a couple hours off in the morning that's all!! I think I gave sufficient notice and have reminded them this month, and will again just before I go. Guess I have to get use to "telling" and not asking.

After 14 years of transcribing for a medical practice, suddenly, without notice, I was "dumped."  My client implimented the required EHR mandated by President Obama.  I guess I was somewhat naive in not seeing this coming, but I assumed transcribed documents by a "real person" would still be wanted by my client.  Now I find myself at age 57 without work.  My next step is to inquire about verbatim transcription, but the idea of not correcting improper grammar and using "yeah" ...
