My pet peeve - Surely not just me

Posted: Jan 26, 2013

It is beginning to drive me CRAZY that these companies never feel like they owe us any explanation whatsoever when we run out of work.  On my job, I will have full lines maybe three days and then the fourth day not one drop of work.  Sometimes, I will email my supervisor to ask her and don't get a response back.  I cannot understand why anyone would feel that we should go to work, not have a single thing to do, and we deserve zero communication as to why!

Back when I first started in this industry, even though most communication was via email, supervisors and such were still courteous and understanding and it was treated more like actual employment.  I have noticed now that employees are treated more like they are doing US a "favor" by "allowing" us to type, like throwing us a bone every now and then and if they don't throw the bone to us, who are we to complain?  It blows my mind!

I understand new technological advances and how maybe MTs can't make as good of a living as we could in the past, but would it be so bad just to go back to treating us like human beings?  I told my husband this not long ago.  I don't necessarily need to make the money I used to make (though it would be nice) BUT I have such a hard time with the fact that I feel like I have to beg to work.  I would rather have a job where I am appreciated, not made to feel like an aggravation to someone when I am just asking to do what I was supposedly hired for.

Me, too! - Getting Out!

I feel your pain. At my job, we get told a lot that "due to the holiday, work is slow, but it'll be back to normal the next day!" The problem with that is, work is usually slow the day after the holiday, too. And, of course, we all know it doesn't have to be a holiday for work to be slow, whether the work is being outsourced or working for a hospital or clinic.

The last two weeks in December were pretty bad. Work was pathetically slow, and I kept running out. I remember not having work until up to two hours during my shift most days during that time, and getting paid pennies per line doesn't help. I really, really hope I get that job next week!

Clarification... - Getting Out!

[ In Reply To ..]
I should clarify that I meant I wouldn't have work until two hours after my shift was scheduled to begin.

My scheduled shift begins at 8 AM, and I usually - dont see work til after 2 pm! SUCKS! NM

my boss used to hold it back to get her evening shift covered. - like we didnt know that game. NM

I'm pretty sure that's what's going on with my boss, - too. I was once approached and - s/m

asked if I wanted to work graveyard (with no pay differential!) and I said no. (Graveyard shift is not good for a person's health, among other things!)

However, over the past few months, work is sent to my pool later and later and later. Well, too bad for them! I just got a very small part-time A.M. job, so I refuse to work late nights anymore - I have to get my sleep for my *real* job!

The same for me! (sm) - Meerkat

They usually don't communicate if I ask where the work is. If they do get back to me, I get all the stupid excuses from them as to why work is slow. Or else they offer to take me off the account I'm on, and put me on some godawful account that you can't make your lines on, either. No thanks!

MEANWHILE, I wish I could give the same excuses to my landlords and my creditors when I'm short on money that month: "It was Ramadan! Big holiday weekend!" "It's the Geminid meteor shower. We NEVER get work during the Geminid meteor shower!" and soon - "It's Super Bowl Sunday - doctors never dictate during the Super Bowl".

We can't use those excuses when we can't pay our bills, and I think it's ridiculous these companies think those same lame excuses are gonna fly with their MTs!

Has anyone ever sent an email asking what is up - with the work and SM

[ In Reply To ..]
including ALL the excuses that you have heard yourself plus all the excuses you have heard other people get just to see what the answer might be? Put them in numeric form and ask them to check which one it was? :) Or would this be a no-no to get on the wrong side of TL?
I've sent emails to my TL, and inevitably I end up having - my work suddenly scrutinized and - sm

found to have overnight morphed from "good job!" to "you're about to be terminated". I really don't care so much anymore. As soon as I get a job offer somewhere else (NOT in MT!), I'm gone. These MTSO dorks know not one iota about the nature of the business they're trying so lamely to run.

My frustration is when there is no work during your regular schedule - and it all shows up on the weekend...SM

And the multitude of emails arrive demanding "MANDATORY OVERTIME COMMITMENTS" to be sent for how much OT you plan to work and reminding you that no one should be short hours or lines with this much extra work. Why do I want to sit for 5 days waiting for work, and then work my days off just because the work happens to be there? Or am I just being petty?

I agree! - K

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to have a job that did that. I was required to sit and babysit my computer 40 hours a week, work or not, but then when extra work would come through on weekends I was required to work what they called "OT" to make up my lines, which I didn't get through no fault of my own. This industry is crazy as can be these days.

same here! - anon

A lot of the time I feel like my "regular shift" doesn't exist. The company seems to expect me to be "on call" and available to work anytime the jobs are there. No excuses for being short your hours.

My dictations seem to disappear - overnight

[ In Reply To ..]
I work weekends. Late last night I saw about 8 dictations in my pool from an account assigned to me because I work the weekend shift (or so I was told). This morning I logged on to start work and they are all gone. Where do they go overnight? They weren't priority reports either. Had I known I'd be without work today I'd have visited my parents or something. Instead I'm homebound watching an empty queue.

I could be wrong but that usually means it went overseas - where their day is our graveyard. NM

Just venting.. why does the dictator feel the need to state, "Briefly..." in every one of her reports, as she starts dictating an almost 30-minute report? Just annoys me! ...

Sorry, I just have to vent. This PhD I type evals for uses the phrase, "The form indicates...."  The form is filled out by the parents.  It would seem to me that the PARENTS indicate -- as the form is an inanimate object and cannot "indicate" anything.  OK, getting off my soap box and back to work.  P.S. She also ends many sentences in prepositions. ...

More than anything, I hate it when they're eating and dictating.  I can't verbalize how upset this makes me.  I'm not asking the dictator to kiss my rear end, but right now I've got an ESL with an incomprehensible accent chomping and chewing in my ear.  AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!! ...

Ooooh!  This gets me.  This is an NP who is dictating acute care - "The patient comes in with a diagnosis of non-insulin dependent diabetes 'myelitis'."  Puhleeze!  The same dictator pronounces "organomegaly" as "organomeglea."  It's like hearing someone scratching their fingernails down a blackboard.  Shouldn't these people have had enough schooling to be able to sound out words?! ...

After struggling with names like Siobhan, Ahleksi (concocted to prove a point), and Yvan, I am so happy to have a "normal name" such as what sounds like "John Carter." Whew! Finally! A no-brainer! But I start to look it up-- no such thing in the data base. Well! It just happens to be "John Carter" spelled "Gionn Kharter." This is just a not-real-life illustration. But isn't it irritating when you finally get a regular-sounding name and it's not so regular, and the d ...

I know this is petty, but for some reason, it grates on my nerves to hear:  blah, blah Period space space.   Or Colon space space enter.  I mean, please, are we considered that incompentent?  but on the other end of the spectrum we have those that don't say any punctuation, which is absolutely fine, but a pause would be nice.  It's not necessary to dictate a whole report in one breath. ...

Posting Pet Peeve
Nov 05, 2010

I have a POSTER pet peeve.  When a comment or question is posted about a specific company, why is the original poster likely to never elaborate?  Why are they wasting everyone’s time? What is up with these hit-and-run posts?   Someone makes an outrageous comment or asks a question implying something negative.  Then when you answer and either ask for more information or ask the original poster a question, the original poster is long gone – never to be heard ...

VENTING - PET PEEVE
Jul 18, 2012

I just have to vent.....the thing that I cannot stand most about this job - even more than the pay, the lack of work, etc....is when the dictator CHEWS GUM when he/she is dictating.  The sound of someone smacking their gum, whether in person or on the phone, makes me CRAZY.  I am positive they do not do this in front of patients or other doctors...but since we aren't 'real people' to them...they just smack away.  I can barely get through the report.  OK.  ...

Unless the CP states otherwise... When the doctor dictates "Dr. Smith," don't pull in his full name with credentials from the database, just type "Dr. Smith." Example: Dictated: " I called Dr. Smith to the ER. " Type: I called Dr. Smith to the ER. NOT: I called Emmett J. Smith, MD, to the ER. If the doctor does dictate a full name or for some other reason you do pull the name in from the database, remember to put a comma after the credentials if it is in the middle of the sentence. ...

Dear Employer: Today's Pet Peeve
Nov 13, 2010

I've been a transcriptionist for more than 25 years, have worked for 7 different employers, and every one of them has always said that it is required for everyone to work one weekend day, you either work sunday through thursday or tuesday through saturday.  Then I see an email to all employees that says, "please consider changing your schedule to work a weekend day."  WTF?  There are people not already working a weekend day?  That makes me feel pretty stupid for all the ...
