Medical Scribe job openings - Heaven Help Us

Posted: Apr 23, 2011

I have been seeing more and more job openings for Medical Scribes.  They are even showing up as part of other job descriptions.  The ads that are strictly for a Medical Scribe state no prior experience needed and sometimes only a high school diploma as their only requirement – no Medical Transcription education or experience.  Pay $10 an hour.  Anyone else noticing this?

One of many ads I am seeing:

…full time Registered Nurse for an office/clinic setting. …. Performs as medical scribe to physician. Qualifications: Licensed RN

Heaven help us!!!

Saves them $$$ - oaf

I worked for an ophthalmology practice and all the chart notes were done by a "scribe" sitting in the exam room filling out a form. They only dictated when it was absolutely necessary and that was just referral letters. Any way to save a buck....

I've seen ads for scribes for ER - poorhouse

The scribe follows the ER doc thru the department transcribing on either a laptop or stationary computer in each cubicle. Can't imagine what that is like in a very busy, extremely emergent situation. And yes - about $12/HR.

On the plus side, scribing will raise appreciation for - (Just thinking)

what we do. Imagining

1. Med students sometimes turn out to have very sloppy written English and will always be leaving just as they get broken in. This will matter more to some physicians than others, of course. Plus, they have an availability problem.
2. RNs are very expensive and need to be used very carefully to justify. Not an option for many probably. Pay would have to be high enough to lure them into this work.
3. HS grad/$12 workers same as med students but worse. Plus, the physicians will have to train them and they'll often be as short-term as the med students because: they broke up with girlfriends and were bummed, didn't have money for gas, work was keeping them from hanging with friends, or--they got accepted to nursing school or just finished up their certificate in something that pays better.
4. Low-level scribing, as done today, is incredibly inefficient, one person following another around all day just to produce a handful of reports, doing nothing at all much of the time. Plus, this isn't work for dummies; a fair number of low-skill hires are not going to work out well over time, especially if an employer wants to evolve the work to higher and more expanded functions.

Now, what I'm wondering is why physicians don't just grab someone from their office, tell her to wear her walking shoes tomorrow (not quite that simple, of course), and have her scribe AND perform most of her usual duties, such as billing, as she follows him around. This would cost less than us, get that immediate record in the chart, get calls to colleagues done and recorded, and also get billings, labs, etc., out immediately. There's no reason why all other office functions have to remain in the office long after ours' left. (They could, technically speaking, even answer phones and schedule appointments while standing over some poor hapless patient.) BTW, this could also be considered on the plus side for those inclined. We'd be very good at it pretty fast and, if it didn't pay as well as high-earnings MTs make, it'd pay a lot more than just "scribing" is now.

Medical Transcription At Home To Become A Medical Scribe?
Jan 20, 2015

Has anybody left medical transcription at home to become a medical scribe?  I have an opportunity to do so but there aren't any scribes currently in my area and I don't know anyone who has worked as a scribe before.  The scribe position starting pay is almost double what I make as an MT per hour so it is very tempting, I just don't know much about it. ...

I Just Saw An Ad For A Medical Scribe
Jun 25, 2010

I just saw an ad for a Medical Scribe.  The description is that the MT accompanies the doc from room to room to see patients, sits at the computer in the room and transcribes the H&P/procedure while doc is doing the exam.  Starting pay was $17/hr with full benefits.  Anybody ever heard of this?  I think it's a good idea, leaves the doc hands free to tend to the patient.  It sounds a little like being a court reporter as far as "live" dictation being done. ...

Medical Scribe
Mar 12, 2015

Hi everyone - I am a long term lurker on this site. I have been a transcriptionist for 24 years, working as an independent MTSO, inhouse acute care, working at home for acute care, and also for several online companies. I was burned out and gave up transcription to become a personal care attendant, which I loved, but it cut my pay in half. I then got hired as a medical scribe for a cardiology group and I just wanted to tell you how invigorated I have become and now in love I am with this positio ...

Anyone Looked Into Being A Medical Scribe?
Dec 04, 2014

Medical Scribe Responsibilities
Mar 15, 2015

Just saw an ad in my rural area for a scribe, M-F, 7-5.  Isn't that 50 hours a week?  I've been wondering what the responsibilities of a scribe would be, though this could certainly vary depending on the practice and its location.  This practice is paying $8/hour.  How on earth would a scribe write/type fast enough to keep up with real-time conversations between doc and patient, and get everything in the record before being rushed into the next patient visit?  At least MTs hav ...

Anyone Pursuing Finding Work As A "medical Scribe"?
Jun 24, 2012

I've seen reference to this career path from time to time here....wondering if there's anything new to add?   I have a friend who recently went to work as an MT for a doctor's office.  She's typing the minor emergency room notes or same-day surgery notes or something like that.  Their PCPs do their own EHR, but she said the doctors really dislike having to do it, and it reduces the number of patients they can see each day.   As the EHR is implemented mor ...

I have voice files sent to me that I cannot play in Windows Media or Express Scribe. More Openings
Jul 14, 2010

I noticed on the job seeker's board lately Transcend has openings every week.  I also realize they are one of the top 3 dogs in the industry supposedly, but I cannot  help but notice the other 2 top dogs are not advertising weekly to job seekers.  I bet many will say because they are acquiring NEW accounts, but I am suspicious it is because they cannot keep MTs.    ...

False Job Openings
Nov 23, 2009

I don't understand these MTSOs.  I've interviewed with both Keystrokes and Transcend per their job seeker's board ads for all shifts available, part-time and full-time, and offered a job.  However, both declared no 1st shift openings and that they are only hiring for 2nd and 3rd shifts, nor do they have any part-time openings.  They both indicated that 1st shift rarely has openings and they don't regularly hire part-timers. Why do they advertise thes ...

Did MMEs not get the same pay cut that the rest of us MT/ASR editors did? Very interesting that no QA rate is mentioned....me thinks me smells a rat hidden in the wall. ...

Is It Just Me? Openings And Peruse The Various Listings
Dec 27, 2009

As I scroll through various openings and peruse the various listings, it is astounding to me how many employers do not know how to word the description properly.  E.g., they fail to include the most basic info, such as whether it is a telecommuting or an on-site job (and it's not clear from the duties and responbilities).  Not including those details wastes everyone's time (if an applicant is interested, they must ask the question, then await the reply).  Then, of course, are th ...
