MT Roll in Malpractice Prevention - Are they Aware? (sm) - Morgan

Posted: Oct 01, 2012

When I worked for several clients as a contractor for about 20 years, I don't think a day ever passed that I didn't make corrections to doctors who were exhausted or on auto pilot who made dictation errors that could cost them a fortune in a malpractice suit. It was right corrected to left breast, making sure the woman didn't have a surgical history of prostatectomy, nor a man having a TAH BSO, making sure allergies went where they would be noticed, and knowing when they were dictating the wrong patient's diagnosis. I doubt that any of us call these corrections to the doctor's attention as they happen so frequently, especially on autopilot PE dictations with dictations like "clear lungs" on a Stage IV lung cancer patient, etc. It is something that we have never received any credit for as it hasn't been recognized. However, I think with so many of us getting out of the profession from MTSO abuse and to avoid bankruptcy or homelessness, the MTSOs are going to end up getting what they pay for and it sure isn't going to be a conscientious person who cares about the accuracy of a patient's medical record. I think the health care system will be in for a rude awakening with increased malpractice suits because our roles have been unrecognized and undervalued.

Keep dreamin', not gonna happen. NOBODY cares. - nm

Role of the MT - anon

It is not just the MTSO but the clients and costs for the expensive technology they are using. The clients (physicians) are demanding more for less, including those expensive platforms you are transcribing in, dictation equipment, software, QA, etc.

Doctors Reported To Their State Medical Board For Malpractice, How About Maldictation?
Jun 14, 2013

When a doctor repeatedly, deliberately makes vocal utterances that do not even come close to forming words, whose dictation cannot be deciphered by MTs with 20-30 years experience in his specialty, shouldn't this doctor be reported?  ...

So You Can't Roll Over 40 Hours PTO?
Dec 12, 2009

I always thought that you could carry over PTO under 40 hours into the new year but someone was telling me today that they did away with that policy or are doing away with that policy and that you will loose everything now and start fresh with PTO.... So is that true or is she just mistaken?  If that is the case I am SCREWED because I didn't ask for any time off this season and will lose about 30 hours.... so I hope it is not. ...

I'm laughing aloud as today I received an official email from the Q indicating that the roll out of version 7 has been delayed and no new date is set.  Just as said in this forum, there are those who are in the know and the rest of us just wait to learn the eventual truth.  :) Happy Holidays! ...

Anyone Aware Nuance Has Gotten Rid Of Transcription
Jan 13, 2015

for the Kaleida Health System and will no longer be using MTs at all soon, they are using templates and the doctors will be editing their own reports, and this is for the entire system as radiology has already been phased out. this must be similar to MModal's voice 'understanding' not just recognition. it is tied into the EHR and can create reports from templates based on the electronic health records. it knows when a doctor dictates an error and will flag it, and all the doctor ...

Is Anyone Aware Of The Trade Adjustment Assistance Act?
Jun 12, 2012

I just found out about this government program.  From what I understand, it helps those who have lost all or part of their hours/income due to outsourcing of their profession, especially us older workers who need to retrain in order to reenter the workforce in another field.   It looks to me like Medical Transcriptionists should fit their description, and we should be eligible for some funding to get some training!   The catch is, in order to file, you have to have at least 3 pe ...

American Health Connection - Be Aware
Feb 09, 2015

I was hired by American Health Connection as a patient scheduler. I was sent an offer letter which I signed and then an email came with several forms to complete. Once had to be notarized, so I mailed everything back priority rate. Then, another email came with more attachments. Within those attachments, was a training reimbursement agreement that I was required to sign that said that if I quit the job prior to 6 months on the job I would have to pay $2,500 to the company. I have never in my lif ...

Anyone Answer Ad Posted In March For Company STAT Transcription, Inc--be Aware

I sent my resume in and just heard back last week asking if I was still interested. She sent a brief little word document with some account specs, cpl and paydates--no contract, HIPAA agreement, etc. I did three voice files the first day. She sent back a copy of my transcription, supposedly with corrections, but there were no QA markings or corrections. I did 15 voice files the next day and again she sent back a copy of my transcription with no obvious corrections. I asked her how I was sup ...

Offshore Transcription Stories Wanted- Medical Malpractice Cases Related To Offshore Transcription M
Oct 15, 2009

A legal contact was inquiring about the connection of medical mistakes related to off-shored transcription mistakes.  I have told him to review these boards and hopefully he will benefit from the information here.  While he did not discuss the exact case, I think that he will be able to use the off-shore transcription issue to his client's benefit or at least highlight that the provider in question does not have as rigorous control on processing records as other pr ...
