Hourly MT Compensation Plumets from Dictators Refusing to Use 'Pause' - Angie

Posted: Jun 05, 2013

Last night I was stuck editing an ESL doctor who pauses so long between words my hourly rate dropped down to less than $2. an hour! I filed & painted all my nails between words, cleaned and organized my desk and sat for an agonizing minutes with nothing to do but wait. The neighbors could probably hear my yelling "COME ON!!!!! SAY SOMETHING YOU ____ _____ _____ _____"   Why do these ... people not even think to use the pause command?

The clients and MTSOs can bitch about TAT, yet this must be the biggest contributor to reports being late.  We can only edit them as fast as they are dictated, and this is with the speed turned all the way up so we have to edit chipmunks!

This account is 3 days behind yet there is not a thing I can do about it no matter how fast I try to work with these dictators who don't even care that we are having to spend a shift earning nothing and just getting further behind.  How would they like it if I made an appointment to see them and spoke 1 word a minute while chatting with friends on my cell?

I just WISH these MTSOs and software sales people would teach the pause command as it would solve so many problems.  The clients apparently haven't a clue.

Notify your supervisor about the issue - They can choose to advise the dictator

about it or they can choose to ignore it. At least if the MTSO or client ever complains about TAT or your production speed, you have one of the reasons documented and can remind them about it at that time.

We're not magicians. We can't produce lines out of dead air.

Good idea. I don't want to be fired for this production problem this dictator has created. (sm - Angie

But at the same time, I don't want to be a "complainer". Hard to know what to do as you can be fired if you do, and fired if you don't. I seriously doubt any MTSO would inform the dictator to use the 'Pause' command, but appreciate your input.

If this happens to you again and it's a SR dictation - this is what I do.

You have to be careful with this but it works. If it's sound rec, put your cursor on the next word in your document and press Shift+ALT+K and bring your voice up to the cursor and go on. Be careful!! Make sure it makes sense. It SHOULD match up. You can also really SCREW up too but he says something in between but most times you can tell.

Sorry...typo...."screw up too IF he says - something.....NM

Wow! Does that work on most platforms? I'll try it. THANKS! - Angie

The problem is, depending on the platform, it might - get kicked back...

for "did not listen to entire dictation." If anyone tries it, be sure to definitely listen on the last bit through to the very end. I think it's worth experimenting with at least once, and you should be paid for it, regardless, but if one's platform works that way and you keep doing it, there might be repercussions.

I've got an account with tons of these types of dictators. My problem with them isn't the fact that they're ESLs so much as it is the interminable pauses. I'm not using this kind of in-between skipping, though (even though I technically could on this platform, as long as I listen to very end), because I have indeed missed something doing that before, so I would also recommend backing up a little bit extra after doing each skip. What I really want is an increase in the maximum speed of 200 up to 300 or 400.

I assumed that the OP was talking about - skipping around in

[ In Reply To ..]
sentences and phrases. I wasn't talking about skipping to the end of the dictation. I think "he/she" understands what I was talking about too as she didn't say anything about "skipping to the end". I've been doing this procedure for almost 2 years now on 3 different platforms with no repercussions BUT...LIKE I SAID....you MUST BE CAREFUL with it and make sure the SENTENCE AND/OR PHRASE that you are jumping around in, STILL MAKES SENSE.
I didn't say that either, I was talking about skipping small, apparently silent sections. - kicked back
[ In Reply To ..]
What part of "in-between skipping" and "each skip" did you not get?

I'm just trying to give a warning, as I have had it happen to me in terms of being kicked back. Not ALL platforms are created equal.
I completely understood. Thank you! - Angie

Dictators And 'PAUSE' Button.
Jan 24, 2013

Does anyone know if EMRs still even have a pause command? Do dictators have any concept that they are forcing us to sit idly without pay while they flip pages looking for lab results, or reviewing a chart? Maybe the MTSOs should advise their clients that if they want their reports back within the specified TAT that they cannot waste hours of our time sitting and doing nothing. ...

To Those Refusing
Mar 17, 2015

i want to join you, but i'll admit, it scares me.  for those of you who truly are not going to work the extra, could you keep us posted here on what repercussions if any happen to you?  i'm really really tempted not to do it.  as it is, i'm working the extra now, but i'm barely working (as you can see).  my line count has never been lower but my spirit is just completely broken and i don't even care what happens to me, except, i do need a job. ...

Penalty For Refusing To Guess
Aug 01, 2013

Now that we can be dinged for leaving a blank that QA thinks we should have known, my % score has gone to the dogs (my apologies to all canines).  When I get a mush-mouth  or a really gnarly ESL, there are circumstances where I have no choice but to leave a blank.  I'm not talking about stuff that could be looked up.  Sometimes the blank in question can be interpreted as either one word or other other and either choice doesn't change the meaning.  But I can gu ...

Lousy Dictators - Crappy, Hard To Understand Dictators, Both ESL And English-speaking
May 17, 2014

Today I will make less than half of what I normally get because all I've gotten today are crappy, hard to understand dictators, both ESL and English-speaking.  Seems like all I get lately are the hard to understand, mush-mouth dictators.  Guess Nuance doesn't want their MTs making quota.  Sorry.  I just had to vent. ...

Unsure Where To Pause
Nov 09, 2009

I am usure as to where one thought ends and the next begins as in the part of plantar flexion in the toe at teh extremes....something just does not seem like I have the sentences correct. Any idea what I am doing wrong? tia.   Evaluation of the foot does show dorsomedial bony prominence that is tender to palpation.  There is also pain with passive dorsiflexion and plantar flexion in the toe at the extremes.  She is stiff as compared to the contralateral side.  ...

The Pause Button
Dec 20, 2010

Dictator states to another in the room - What's the button for pause on this thing? Other person in room - Don't worry about it, just let it run...the secretary doesn't care. What!?  Thank you for encouraging dead spaces in the dictation, I enjoy sitting here not getting paid, listening to papers shuffling and chattering in the background.  Oh, and I'm a Medical Transciptionist/Medical Language Specialist, not the secretary. ...

SR: Do They Even Have A PAUSE Command??
May 15, 2015

Started a new job this week and I can't see how I can make minimum production due to the long pauses in every report I have done so far.  They must not even have a Pause command in the software, as why would 100% of the dictators suddenly stop using it?  I'm sure others know the stress of the threat of termination with each long pause dimishing their counts.  ...

Did They Eliminate The 'PAUSE' Command??
Dec 24, 2012

How would the doctors like it if every patient they saw paused for over a minute between words? Then they complain when we are out of TAT. Can they comprehend that for all the hours MTs are left sitting at their desks not producing because they are waiting and waiting for the next word to finally ooze from the dictator's mouths, they are delaying TAT for that report? I wonder if they are aware how much time we spend working while producing nothing. ...

Does Anyone Know If The Dictation Software Developers Omitted The "pause" Command?
Feb 17, 2013

What happened?? With my own accounts I've worked for 100 different doctors and every single one used the pause as a standard courtesy. Today - not ONE single dictator uses it, yet some still keep saying "sorry" when they have more than 10 seconds of dead air time. Do the dictators now consist of a new generation of rudeness or did they "forget" to include a "PAUSE" command in the programs??? ...

A new ESL dictating a DS. Can't speed him up because he's too "new" (to this country?). He is spelling every other word!!!!!! AND then spells it again - extubated, e-x-t-u-b-a-t-e-d, extubated e for elephant, x for crosses, t for tom, u for umbrella, b for .......... get the picture (sigh)? On top of that, the report is 28 minutes long!!! Should never have gotten out of bed this morning. LOL I do feel bad for him that he doesn't realize he doesn't have to spell every other ...

Hourly PTO Pay
Jul 17, 2012

I just started with MModal a few months ago and I'm searching for the job offer that states the amount of $$$ we receive per hour in PTO.   Meanwhile, I thought I would come here and ask.  Is it $10 or $12 per hour?   I'm thinking it's one of those.  I could be getting these numbers mixed up with training pay though.  ...

What's An Hourly Rate?
Dec 26, 2009

I am thinking of getting into medical transcription but all I read on here is negative posts about how little work is available and how you are all getting paid less than you were last year.  Now, please don't flame me, I know this is a cheeky question, but to be quite honest ".08 cpl" doesn't mean much to me.  Would anyone mind telling me what they actually earn per hour (when the work is there) and how many hours per day they generally work.  It will just give me an id ...

Provider Going To EMR -- Hourly Vs CPL?
Jun 08, 2011

One of my providers is going to switch over to EMR.  I've looked into the program and it's got a similar document section to MS Word.  However, with them going to EMR, I'm assuming I'll lose quite a bit of my bulk work (macros, etc) that I currently have with "straight typing." So my question is this ... is it worth it to transcribe EMR for a CPL rate or is it better to renegotiate my "contract" and go hourly?  I'm an IC/MTSO so get no benefits. Would ap ...

If VR Were Done At An Hourly Wage,
Dec 30, 2012

would it be a more tolerable thing?  My current job is currently straight transcription but don't know how long that will last.  I know of a job opening with VR at an hourly rate, but have always hated VR in the past.  The contemplated position uses the Mmodal/Docuscribe and looks simpler than the systems I used in the past.  Do you think I should I hang on to what I have, even with a recent reduction in pay, or go for the hourly VR that also has better benefits? ...
