Help me decide - stressed

Posted: Mar 29, 2011

Hope someone can help me.  I have worked for a couple of MTSO for around 10 years.  Will be switching to VR soon.  I am starting to have problems forcing myself to work at least 2 straight hours without interrupting myself either out of boredom or because someone interrupted me (I work from home).  I can never seem to get over 200 lines per hour and the benefits are not great.  I applied to a hospital in house (about 35 minutes away).  The only shift they had was a weekend evening shift along with a couple of odd week nights.  Their benefits were great and they pay hourly plus a bonus.  I know I should jump at this as there is a pension plan along with a stack of other benefits.  I would most probably make more money working for them.  My thoughts are maybe down the road I could work from home or possibly change shifts or even part of my shift at some point.  I should be so excited but all I can think of is having to commute at night and give up my weekends.  It is not like I really do much most weekends anyway with teenagers now and I typically work these hours on my own unless I have specific plans, then I just get up and leave, which I will not be able to do working remote.  Any thoughts or ideas.  I am not getting younger so getting my foot in the door of a stable company before I get older makes sense, right?

I tend to think this is something only you can muddle through, - you know you best. sm

what works for me works for me tailored to who I am and what I've been through. Period. Any advice or 'ideas' I could offer would be worthless, pretty much. Not in your shoes.

good luck, though.

That 70-mile round trip drive would decide for me, especially if it's late night driving, unless there's a chance I'd eventually be moving closer to the hospital. It's hard not to get bored and restless sitting in one spot, doing the same thing for hours. I do too, and I can't do 200 lines an hour either. In the end, you're probably going to do what feels right over what might make more sense. That's how I've lived my life; of course, I'm a mess too - haha.

With gas approaching $4.00 a gallon, that might cancel your wage increase. The commute is more than an hour out of your day, spent on the road. At your new job, you will probably be expected to sit at your desk for longer than 2 hours at a time. I work on site, and trust me, there are a lot of interruptions and distractions. You probably won't be escaping VR, for long anyway, I think it's a fact of life. You say you're distracted at home now, but then say this new job will give you a chance to work at home later on? That part was confusing to me. Anyway, as was mentioned, only you can decide. If you think it is a better opportunity, then it is worth a try.

Burnout - Need a vacation?

[ In Reply To ..]
I am a fast transcriptionist and up until about 2 months ago, I could burn up the keyboard, then suddenly, I found myself feeling just the way you do. I sit and look at the screen a lot and make myself grab a job. But I think I am just in burnout mode. It's been almost 2-1/2 years since I took a vacation, so I took next week off. I will use all the hard-earned vacation hours I have earned, but it can't be worse than what is going on in my world right now. I have worked in-house, and my hospital outsourced suddenly. I had fantastic benefits, but no commute as I worked remotely. Given the chance to get back to that pay and those benefits, I would jump at the chance, but then, again, I would hate that commute. Any chance you can relocate?

Yes, it does make sense. Ask yourself you feel 5 years from now if you stay where you are, as opposed to 5 years from now at the inhouse position where you will have benefits, steady hourly pay you can count on, PTO, and a pension plan. You should try the in house-you can listen to music or recorded audio books to make the commute more pleasant and 35 mins. is nothing. Remember, things change - chances are in a year or so, you will be offered a better shift at the in house job. If you truly hate it, you can always quit and go back to working at home.

mt1347 is right, I think. I think I would commute to take an in-house secure job. One of the most important things in life is satisfaction with it. I agree. I think maybe you should try it! Good luck!

You are right. You sound just like my husband. I think I have made my decision. I will be working a lot less for a lot better pay and benefits. You never know when these nationals are going to merge or change and there is no security. I think I will suck it up and try it. I do not have the best work habits at home and get interrupted a lot, so this way my home time is my home time. No pressure to get back on and do more. Thanks

I wanted to share something with all of you in regard to job security in an on site position. I have a wonderful employer (been there 17 years) and a great on-site gig, great pay and great benefits. Our clinic is going to Epic and Dragon Speak in June. The plan is to cut the MT staff by 90% with the goal of eliminating transcription completely. It won't happen overnight, of course, but it's going to happen. Unlike you, I'm looking for a job with an MTSO because I love transcription. I'm getting close to retirement age and want to keep working as an MT rather than change careers. The point is, the job that I thought would last forever could be gone tomorrow, and it could happen to any of us, there are no guarantees on site either. Hopefully this will not be the case for you. Best of luck with your decision.
So true, Decide, but Stress needs reassurance right now. :) - Stress, it sounds like a good

decision. I had trouble sitting and working once (when I was going through menopause), which made me feel bad well beyond just losing money because I knew I should be doing much better. Your on-site position will give you some extra support you can use right now, and you'll sleep better at night knowing you're doing what you're supposed to. Later on, home may or may not look good again, but right now just go for it, make the change. A changes go, BTW, it's a pretty small one and not irreversible.

Can't Decide Between MA Or LPN
May 22, 2013

I am going to do it - get out of MTing for good and really, really want to work in patient care.  I love the thought of being an LPN, but I'm seeing so many jobs for medical assistants.  It seems to me as though MAs are replacing LPNs.  A hospital near me has 13 openings for medical assistants and only one opening for an LPN.  Which way to go is the best? Confused! ...

How Do You Decide What Is Okay To Abbreviate?
Mar 27, 2011

I know some are obvious, like MRI, but how do you decide what is okay to abbreviate and what is not?  For example, I am transcribing for a neurologist/sleep study doc and he uses CPAP, COPD, and JVD a lot.  Are those to be spelled out?  In school, we learned that everything should be spelled out, but I have seen evidence to the contrary in several books.  What is your opinion? ...

Trying To Decide Which School
Nov 01, 2011

Ive been trying to decide which school to take the MT course....Andrews or MTEC. I know there has been lots of posts already but I have a few unanswered questions. I have a pretty good idea how MTEC works since they have a webinar showing & explaining their learning platform. I also know that they are all online and if you choose to buy books to study its extra. Im trying to find out how you learn at Andrews and what materials are included. I know i need to call but i want to hear from real peop ...

Trying To Decide Between Employee And IC...
Dec 08, 2011

I am a little math challenged.  Does anyone know which would be better (general ballpark idea) employee at 8 cpl, or IC at 9 cpl?  I do not need the insurance, as I have private insurance, so strictly paywise.  Is it better to take the lower cpl and not have to pay the entire tax, or the higher cpl and pay all taxes?  TIA.  ...

Trying To Decide To Test For A Job
Apr 15, 2012

I applied for a VR job that I'm not sure I want. I don't mind the VR so much but it doesn't pay much but I really only want a part-time job and this one is full time. I am wondering what these companies consider full time. Some say 32 to 40 hours per week. Not sure I like the days either with one weekend day included. ...

Trying To Decide, SoftScript Or Amphion
Nov 05, 2010

Both part-time, both let me choose my schedule; however, Amphion is primarily editing and SoftScript is straight transcription at more than double the editing pay offered by Amphion.  Anyone have any experience working for both or is anyone currently employed by either and can offer some insight in how they are to work for? Thanks for any info, good, bad or indifferent! ...

Would Appreciate Some Help From Current CMTs To Help Me Decide
Apr 17, 2011

Does your employer offer a differential for being a CMT (Certified Medical Transcriptionist)?  I am on the fence as to whether to take the CMT test now or just wait until it becomes mandatory.  Would really appreciate some help from current CMTs to maybe sway me one way or the other.  Since I am currently looking for a new employer, this may be the perfect time for me to decide.  If I go the CMT route, then I would probably apply to companies that will pay me more for the C ...

Help! Can't Decide On This Job Offer - Precyse?
Jan 31, 2013

So, I've been agonizing over this decision for a week now. I have a job offer from Precyse, willing to give me the schedule I want and work around my college courses, and about the highest production pay I would expect from any service. This would mean I could leave MModal with a terrible schedule (10 hours on Saturdays), and it is very hard to get time off, terrible management, but I would also be leaving the work I've known for over 10 years. I worked for this hospital (very cushy tr ...

I Have Idea All MTSO Get Together In Conference Call And Decide
Dec 26, 2010

gotten pay down to basically nothing, what else can we do to get more facility money for ourselves.  We cant squeeze facilities more without them going elsewhere, guess we have to squeeze MTs more.  Heck, some have even decided to make MTs pay for platform costs, pay rent for loaned equipement - loaned so MT can do the job MTSO needs done - or started a "mentoring" division so they can basically get work done for free.  What will they think of next???? ...
