For those who have switched careers - sm

Posted: Feb 15, 2012

I am considering going to school to get a certificate/AA type of training, possibly in MA, pharm tech, or massage therapy, that sort of thing.  If you have experience with this, did you run into the "newbie" catch-22 thing where you have to have experience to get a job or can you usually find something right out of school?

We had to spend the first summer break working in the field we were getting the degree in, and it was required in order to graduate. If we couldn't find a job on our own, the school HAD to assist in placing us. However, that was back in the 1990s, seems like eons ago now. I would see if the school you were looking at does something similar though.

I went to school to become a florist/grower and here I am, an MT, because there were no jobs in that field unless you had the money to start up your own business. Now motions are in the works to make marijuana cultivation legal in our state so I'm thinking that schooling may come in handy soon.

The problem is, once you've done those "internships" - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Once you've done those "internships", there are often no jobs. Some of the jobs that do exist won't take people who have come out of internships. They know that if they had been really good, the internship would have led to a permanent job. Since it didn't, the fact that you went through an internship and didn't get offered a job there screens you out.

ads for grow-lights & other indoor cultivation supplies in the "Farm & Garden" section of Craigslist. Lots of ads for product, too.

I would imagine competition will be pretty stiff in that field if it's legalized, and prices may fall. STILL - like anything else, if you produce a superior product, you'll probably be in steady demand! With your knowledge, you would likely be an A-1 "farmer"!

(PS: I think it should be legalized. There are far more important things the police could be doing than busting people for pot! Plus I think for the most part, it's more benign; you never see the MJ equivalent of a "mean drunk"!)

First, I congratulate you on taking steps to get out of this now-horrific field. That's fabulous!!!

While I personally haven't done it, I have some friends who went to school to become pharmacy techs and another who became an RN.

Yes, they did have the newbie issue you describe. With the economy in the toilet, there are TONS of applicants for all kinds of jobs so the competition is very stiff. That "employers' market" enables them to be incredibly particular. My new RN friend worked her butt off, working and going to school, only to discover that the ONLY openings for newbies were working 3rd shift, and since she has kids that won't work for her. So she is still transcribing!

I hope this info helps, and I wish you the best!

IMPORTANT! NEW CAREERS FOR MTs.
Aug 18, 2011

I have been enrolled in college for the last year while still working.  Found out today about a whole new carrer that has just come out and being created because of EHR/EMR and now being offered and will become even more popular. My teachers in college informed me of a meeting they had in the city where I live.  This meeting was held with physicians, PA's, NP's, MT's, Medical Assistance, nurses, etc.  Because of EHR/EMR, most doctor's (about 78%) do not like ...

For Those Who Want To Change Careers,
Nov 30, 2011

google "TAA petition" and read the website to start one against MQ for displaced workers since they are sending all the work to India, especially those displaced due to buyouts.  This is an excellent way to get school paid for to change careers and to make MQ pay for their indiscretions.  Finally, a way to gain from all of this. I think you can contact your department of labor in your state if you have any questions also. ...

Other At Home Careers??
Jan 13, 2015

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any other honest work at home companies other than transcription? I recall a while back someone mentioning their son working for a company at home basically taking incoming calls for I think Direct TV, but didn't directly work for Direct TV, he worked through a different company. I've been doing MT work for 15 years and like many I'm tired, I'm bored. I don't want to search for days just to find a ton of scams or jobs that pa ...

Careers MTs Switch To--Ideas?

Question For MTs That Have Switched To VR

I always remember 4th of July being slow, but really it's just the beginning of June, so what is this going to be, months of nothingness in the beautiful summer weather, sitting in front of your monitor 12 hours a day waiting for work all day and night? Former MT Wanting To Change Careers But Lost
Jan 02, 2013

Hello, Worked as an MT from 1994 until 2010. Starting have problems with my hands in 2003. Becoming an editor saved my life in 2005 and was able to work on broken hands a couple more years. Lost my workers comp case, although doctor said injury was caused by being an MT for 16 years, however, judge wasn't hearing it as workers comp had ...

How Long Did It Take To Retrain Your Eye When You Switched To VR?

I started a VR job just over two weeks ago.  I actually really like it.  It's on the Dictaphone platform which is one of the better ones, the drafts for the most part are pretty good and I find the work interesting. Has Anyone Ever Requested To Be Switched To A Particular Hospital/CCM?-NM
Nov 30, 2011

I worked for over 10 years on the same hospitals and then last spring new hospitals were added to my work load.  These new hospitals were then moved to a new CCM.  Work was plentiful, at first straight typing.  All was good until it turned to ASR and now the work seems to have dried up (I think that Indian drought).  I'm tired of bouncing around and would like to be moved back to my old accounts and old CCM, no complaints with the new CCM, just want to work steady and I ...

Been Switched To VR, Last 3 Years Making 20K Less A Year! Fed Up!
