Do national services usually provide line count documentation? - Leadfoot60

Posted: Oct 24, 2009

The company I work for provides no documentation of what they are paying me for, not even on my pay stub.  There is a way to check on the system but it isn't consistent with what I get paid.  Any comments?

I would assume this to be illegal, but who regulates cyberspace? sm - anon

When it is like that - if they don't pay per report - I don't type their work.

BE CAREFUL.

I repeat, "The MTs counts should match those of the company and vice versa. Period."

I also repeat, "Either way, handling line count in this manner is unethical and disingenuous. No guessing about discrepancies should be involved."

The DEP platform is stable.

The line count is a huge problem - impossible to match. Management will no doubt fail to ADEQUATELY AND HONESTLY address any questions about the fact the line count does not match.

True, line count does not match--but the mismatch is actually in my favor. - CrankyBeach

I just spot-checked some jobs I did this morning. One job, counted in MS Word, shows 1761 characters with spaces. That, divided by 65, comes out to 27.09 lines.

That same job in the DEP platform returns a count of 28.42 lines. I expect this is accounted for by the patient demographics, which are not included in my MS Word copy (which I saved for a procedure sample).

A job I did a couple of days ago where the only thing typed (besides the demos) was NO DICTATION still yielded a line count of 1.94. Again, accounted for by the demographics, which I do NOT have to type myself, so I have always considered them to be a bonus.

Do you have any specific instances you can point to where the platform mis-counts lines not in the MT's favor? Because I have not found it to be true; at least, not working at Transcend. Other companies may be tweaking things somehow to return a falsely low line count, but I have no knowledge of such.

"I expect this is accounted for by the patient demographics, which are not included in my MS Word copy..."

You "expect" or you actually documented that the demographics account for the discrepancy?

Either way, handling line count in this manner is unethical and disingenuous. No guessing about discrepancies should be involved and the MTs counts should match those of the company and vice versa. Period.

Safe assumption, I think... - CrankyBeach

... since every single report that I have spot-checked with an alternate line counting method has been off, in MY favor, by pretty much the same amount. There is no way with this platform to pull the demographics into Word so I can count them myself, unless I were to laboriously copy each field in the demo screen, which would take time that I would rather use transcribing. The demographics vary, of course; depending on whether the patient's name is Joe Blow or Josephine Anastasia Alexandra Blowkowpishenkashinkobpchskyevich and whether the dictating doctor has a short or long name as well....

I can also verify that every Wednesday morning it's the cataract surgery flood; one guy does about 6 of those in a row, it's a template, and the only variation is left or right eye, and the demographics, of course. Those counts come out within about half a line of each other--and again, the count is always higher than my own count by somewhere between 1 and 2 lines total. I have never, EVER run across a count that was too low.

So if the company wants to consistently give me a slightly higher line count than I am able to document at my end, I should have a problem with this... why??

"So if the company wants to consistently give me a slightly higher line count than I am able to document at my end, I should have a problem with this... why??"

Wow. Crankybeach. You are old enough that you should not need to ask that question. Here are a few of the more publicized examples of "why":

Exhibit A: Enron. Lots of people played along and look at the end result.
Exhibit B: Madoff. Lots of people played along and look at the end result.
Exhibit C: The financial meltdown of a year ago involving complex algorithms developed by Ph.D. mathematicians that no one understood but virtually all went along with. Look at the end result.

Arguably, the people who led these institutions got away with much they should not have because the minions went along, collected their share and didn't care to actually understand what was happening. This is going on in the MT industry too.

Far too many people (it sounds like you included) had/have the "I" and "me" mentality that you mention when you ask "So if the company wants to consistently give me a slightly higher line count than I am able to document at my end, I should have a problem with this... why??"

As long as "I'm" getting what is best for "me," no one and nothing else matters. Thus, a very big piece of why our economy is in shambles. Just because you feel you are getting a fair shake with more lines than you are able to document does not make the practice ethical. What happens when the line count is not in your favor? Will you be so generous in your attitude?

VR Line Count - What Kind Of Line Production Should I Shoot For
Mar 24, 2011

I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...

Character Count/line Count
