Advice for working 2nd shift... - wondering

I start 2nd shift tomorrow and will be working 12 pm to 9 pm.  I am wondering how to make this as painless as possible seeing as how I am used to 1st shift.  I can take up to 2 hours for breaks, researching, etc. Any and all advice is appreciated.  Thanks.

I worked those hours for a couple of years, but have now changed to being off at 7 pm instead of 9. I just had a hard time winding down after my shift and would stay up until 12 or 1 am and have a hard time sleeping in. Depends on your sleep habits or if you need to get up early. Other than that, I like being able to run errands in the morning and then come home and work, not having to go out in the evenings, but that's me. Good luck to you.

Personally, I would work straight through and - take my break at the end!

I cannot stand working at night. I am a morning person. I get tired at 6:30 pm. If I had to work that shift, I would eat lunch at 11:30, punch in at 12, have a dinner at my desk around 5:30 and then I would punch out for the night at 8 pm and go to bed.

I would not be punching out for breaks or research... I would just get up once an hour and stretch for a minute and for bathroom breaks as needed, grabbing a drink on the way back, but I would not punch out for those.

Eat lunch before you punch in. If that is too early to eat then at least have it ready to go so that you can eat it at your desk without having to punch out for example - A sandwich, some type of finger foods such as fruit like bananas, grapes, sliced apples and already peeled oranges, A pre-made salad, cup of yogurt. Foods that you can eat at your desk without have to punch out.

Get a Thermos or mug and fill up with water or coffee or whatever it is that you like to drink. I personally have a coffee mug and then a water bottle that I keep at my desk so that I dont have to get up for drinks.

I would take two 10 minute breaks because you should not have to punch out for those; so probably one at 3 hours and then the other at 6 hours. That way you are getting a short break every 3 hours and you can get off at exactly 8pm. Of course stand up and stretch as needed and go potty, but that doesn't take long.

If you get 2 hours for breaks, I would do 12-3, take an hour off, work 4-6, take an hour off, then work 7-9. Done.

I will probably use a lot of this advice. I am kind of nervous because I have never worked 2nd shift, but am sure I will do fine.

I have worked so hard all day, have next to nil inactive time, and still, barely the minimum line count. I would especially like him to do the last report with the horrible scratchy sound with the doctor alternatively blasting out my ears and not talking into the phone, and the horrible output. I have been working third shift for about three months and am still having some trouble getting used to it.  My question is do you work your shift then go to sleep or do you stay up until later in the afternoon and then sleep until your shift starts.  I work a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and am trying to find the best way to be able to stay awake during my shift.  I do not drink coffee.  I have tried some of those energy drinks that are sugar free, which helped some, just now wond ...

many of us will be reassigned to 2nd or 3rd shift. If you are assigned and do not comply, you will be considered as having resigned. I'm considering taking a 3rd shift job, which I've never done before. Any suggestions on making the transition to working 3rd shift from days, staying awake without depending on too much caffiene, getting enough sleep during the day, etc. I also have a puppy that will be at home with me during the day and am wondering if he needs to stay up with me at night so he will sleep during the day also.  I would appreciate any and all advice. I have always worked first shift, but I have been offered a really terrific position working third shift on the weekends, and I am finding myself wanting to give it a try.
