They could trim off some of the admin fat and divide up a bit of that money the top cats are living on, which we made for them to begin with, among all who are currently without work. Oh wait, when pigs fly, right?
Exactly. nm - exOTIer

I would think finding a job that paid more would be the option, not caving in to the nm - cheapskates trying to rob you

[ In Reply To ..]
I know it does not matter if you get 8-10 cpl if there is no work, but there ARE companies out there that have work and pay better. Even cruddy Synernet pays 7/4 and they have work.

True but it is also true that it is somehow easier to find a job - when you have one

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know why it is, but it's easier to find a job when you already have one as opposed to being completely out of work with no unemployment. So, yes, that line rate is atrocious, but something coming in is better than nothing until you can find a job that pays better.

Work is diminished, pay cut in half, company losing accounts, and 4 cpl plus SUPPOSED SCA prevailing wages... not worth sticking around!

No, only the greedy ones are paying 6.5 VBC - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I have three part time jobs and none of them pay anywhere near that low. The companies that are paying 6.5 VBC may want you to believe that is what everybody is paying, but that is simply not true.

6.5 VBC is barely minimum wage *if* you have good accounts, good dictators and hopefully lots of normal/standard inserts. But, if you have lots of ESL, mumble mouths or substandard dictators, which is more often than not these days, it'll be less than minimum wage.

Either way, 6.5 VBC is no where near a living wage here in the United States. Everytime I turn around, my food costs, utilities and everything else is going up. There is no way that I could survive on 6.5 VBC. I'd be better off going on welfare and food stamps.

Measly wages - buns

[ In Reply To ..]
Those folks claiming their paltry per line offerings are on par with the SCA prevailing wages really think we must not know how to research. Perhaps they hope we are just so exhausted we will eventually believe the garbage they continually dish out and expect us to find delightfully appetizing.

Find the SCA prevailing wages for MT in the state you live in by putting in the Google search bar “sca prevailing wages for medical transcriptionist in ___ (enter your state here). Just select the wdol.gov site for your state (some states are grouped together). When the page comes up do control F and type medical transcriptionist in the search box. The occupation code is 12195 if you would rather search that way or just scroll down until you see section 12000 – Health Occupations and then find 12195.

The search brings up SCA prevailing wages for MT ranging from 13.66 to 20.41 depending on the state searched. This really makes their per line rate even more outrageously low.

Mercedes and RO have changed worker’s lives at the drop of a hat without a thought as to how our lives are impacted and expect us to be grateful just to be working. There is no concern for the stress and anxiety they have caused. How many of us have been scrambling for another job while seeing NJA day to day and feeling sick wondering what financial obligations we will be able to meet after the next pay period?

Between the low pay rate at Mercedes and the lack of work without any communication from the owners at RO as to what they are doing to obtain new accounts, my respect for them has hit rock bottom. RO could not even be bothered to send an email regarding how our funds will be handled at the end of this upcoming pay period. Instead we get what has the appearance of a phishing scam and only after requests to admin about whether it was a legitimate email do we get a response, yet multiple responses because admin could not be bothered to take the time to think a response through in its entirety.

Best wishes to all you wonderful MTs, I sincerely hope you find a way out of this mess that works the best for you!

6.5 VBC isn't even close to the SCA prevailing wage - I looked it up

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't, and would not, work for them, but I did look up the SCA prevailing wage for my area. And their paltry 6.5 VBC doesn't even come close, not unless I can type 400+ lines per hour. Is typing 400 lines per hour even humanly possible?

I didn't know that they are claiming that their 6.5 VBC is "on par" with the SCA prevailing wages. If so, this is obviously a bald-faced lie. Their 6.5 VBC is barely on par with the minimum wage laws. But, I suppose that is why they hire IC's, so they don't have to worry about all of those pesky little minimum wage laws.

If you are correct and they are telling their MTs (and clients?) that their pay is on par with the SCA prevailing wages, someone should think about reporting this to the United States Department of Labor. The US DOL might be interested in a company that is making false claims like this.

Just my 2 cents

Based on the “feel your pain” post above that read “SUPPOSED SCA prevailing wagesâ€Â¦,” I searched for information about the SCA prevailing wage to see how far off it is from the reality we have to deal with. I have not personally heard Mercedes make that specific claim.

I was noting that each individual could discover how the 6.5 VBC rate compares to what the SCA prevailing wage is in their state and draw their own conclusions.

It appears at the least the Department of Labor sees MT as a skill set worth being compensated for with a living wage! The few MTs that have remained onsite in this area make close to or a little more than the SCA prevailing wage but they are protected by a union contract. The other big medical facilities and hospitals have all outsourced. Sigh.

Good luck to us all in finding stable work at a good line rate!

EVERY ONE of us should email that page to RO and Mercedes..... - sm

Let them know we're not as stupid as they think we are.

OTI/MTI/RO - armyvet

[ In Reply To ..]
I was with OTI for many years and stayed on with RO and MTI after the split. When I saw the bottom line of my pay check this pay period, I felt like I had the wind knocked out of my sails. I've been a medical transcriptionist over 30 years, and now I'm back to the same wages I made when I first started, except then I was also getting benefits. Truly I felt sick and discouraged, deflated. What was once a positive thing for transcription, working at home has become a nightmare of greedy companies and snotty condescending QA people. I remember a time when QA worked hand-in-hand with MTs in a friendly and cooperative manner. The 6.5 VBC amounts to an approximate $400.00 decrease in my monthly wages...and I thought I was living on a shoestring then! The cost of living, the cost of everything is rising drastically, and wages are going backwards. Transcriptionists worth keeping around will not stick around for the abuse. So yeah, what was once a blessing is going to be the ruination of home based transcription.

I swear, this waiting around for work causes brain damage ... - raven

[ In Reply To ..]
I always start the day cognizant of things I need to do, and after waiting around for work for an hour or two (yes, the fact that it "often" arrives at some times hardly means that it "usually" does) -- I've forgotten what they were and my butt feels glued to my chair ... must submit more applications/resumes.

I was hoping we would get some sort of communication wrt future prospects by the end of the pay period -- probably silly on my part.

Applying to work "in-house" - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
So I have an interview to work in-house next week here locally. I am terrified. Haven't done that in 20 years or more. I was a casualty of the split of OTI, and ended up on the side of Mercedes 100%. I have seen them this week bid my job essentially, begging for someone to start "yesterday" to catch them up. If only they'd been fair in their pay scale, the wouldn't have had to worry and neither would I. I only hope that this push to get outside my comfort zone and my house will be a good thing. And I hope that Mercedes will lose all of those accounts I kept current and worried about and took pride in. Sorry, but that's just how I feel!

Good luck with in-house employment, plus - benefits

[ In Reply To ..]
Unfortunately the surrounding hospitals in my area have all gone to service and when laying us all off, they would not even find in-house jobs for even the 25-year employees. Doomed I guess. Good luck. Should have taken culinary arts, then could work in food service.

US MT Working Outside Of The US
