Is it necessary to go in debt with student loans to adequately learn coding? - I wonder

Posted: May 19, 2010

I know that all schools are not created equal, but What I really want to know is how these three schools really rank in the eyes of an experienced coder or someone who has been involved in any of these programs

Career Step

A college or university with credits and an AA degree

AHIMA

Do you think Career step is equal to AHIMA as far as learning?

The problem is that you could ask 20 different people their opinion and get 20 different answers. There are people out there who LOVE Career Step and highly recommend it. There are also people out there who looked at Career Step and found it to be lacking what they personally wanted in a coding course. Different styles of training fit different people. What works best for me may not be a good fit for you at all.

Personally, if I had to choose from the options you list, I would go with AHIMA. But that is because I don't care for Career Step. But you might love Career Step!

Choosing the right educational path is hard. Probably the best thing you could do is to do some research and write down what you find out. If it is written down, it will be easier for you to remember all of the details and compare your choices.

Just off the top of my head, here are just some of the things you might want to find out about the schools you are considering.

- TOTAL cost. That means you need to know the cost of tuition as well as textbooks and reference materials (if not included in tuition).
- Time requirements. Do they specify how long you can take to complete the course? What are their extension policies?
- Type of instruction. Will you have an actual instructor? Is the course online only? Do they use textbooks? Can you get a list of the books and references included in the course? How will you communicate with your instructor if you have questions?
- Is there any job placement assistance?
- What percentage of their graduates go on to pass certification exams.

Hope this helps! :)

Great post - I didn't ask the question but you provided some good information, thanks :-)

and I appreciate very much your opinion! - me

I feel the plus with the university is the degree in Health information technology, which means if there are no jobs for me coding, I am not limited to JUST coding. I will have an AA degree which is something I have always wanted to accomplish in my "old" age.
The program also has an internship where they place me for 2 months, 1 month in a hospital and 1 month in a physicians office or insurance office.

The university is also CAHIM and AHIMA approved and accredited.

I guess the positives of the AA degree is that it will not limit me to just coding, but it sure will also pep up my resume having attending a CAHIM approved school that is accredited, not to mention the internship and on the job experience.

With the AHIMA or Career Step, I will be only able to look for a "coding job" and that may be hard without any experience, and these two organizations also do not really help place you nor do they do internships.

What you might not know - sm

Is that the only jobs in HIM that require any education are the coding jobs. The rest, at entry-level, which is where you will be after your AA program, are often filled by people who have no education at all. The rest of the non-coding jobs are filled by people who did an entry job for a few years and then advanced. You can go get one of those jobs now and save all that tuition. Be sure to check the salaries for those jobs, too. It's the CODING jobs that pay best.

Interview some graduates about their internship experience. Most aren't what they sound like. A lot of times, they're just sitting around reading procedure manuals and observing, and they don't help you get jobs.

Most HIM graduates never work in the field.

A month-long internship does not seem very long to me. If the employer does not have a true internship program in place they won't know what to do with you and you will, as was mentioned, not be doing very much. A hospital might be able to place you in a coding slot but a doctor's office or insurance company could have you doing any number of clerical tasks. What is CAHIM? I am not familiar with that organization. AHIMA has approved programs in certain schools but to my knowledge there are no AHIMA accredited schools. Accreditation usually means licensing in the state where the college is located and does not pertain to a particular program. I was looking for coding specific training and want to obtain certification, that is why I chose a coding-only program. I also have some hospital coding background so it is not entirely new to me. Regardless of how you choose to obtain your education, if you want to work as a coder, eventually you will want to sit for an exam. Everyone's goals are different. Only you can decide what is best for you.

About Accredited Schools - School Loans - And Oppressive Debt Resulting From Them
Jan 05, 2012

This past year I have read dozens of articles about "accredited" schools that are "approved for federal student loans", that enroll students, enticing them by offering financial aid, pressuring them to enroll even, calling them, e-maiing them, then, after they get them enrolled, not teaching them enough so they can get a job to repay those student loans. They keep them in the program long enough so that they get paid, giving the students "happy grades" so they don't get discouraged and quit ...

Thread About Accredited Colleges/Schools - School Loans - And Oppressive Debt Resulting From Them -
Jan 07, 2012

There's an interesting thread on the New MT board about accredited schools, school loans, and oppressive debt students are facing. I did a search today and there are dozens of articles talking about how students are thousands of dollars in debt for student loans when the education they got was so poor that they can't find a job at all. Others can find a job, but it will take 20-30 years for them to pay back the student loans.  They went to those schools because they got pressured ...

Anyone (who Has Student Loans For MT School) Try This...
Mar 08, 2014

Not that it would be possible, just something I myself have been looking into.  The trade school I went to, I paid a little over $12k for my MT course of 9 months.  The school is not AHDI certified.  I was told ( Back in 2009) that I could get a job right after graduation and be able to work from home.  I had great teachers who refused to just pass everyone (as some were instructed to do by the school so they could keep their accredidation from the state).   I was going ...

CONSOLIDATING STUDENT LOANS INFO
Oct 07, 2010

Has anyone tried to conslidate any kind of student loans lately.  In 2007 my daughter graduated from a private college.  We took out student loans through Sallie Mae and when she graduated we consolidated them with SallieMae. They never asked if she had a job when we did this.  She has to pay back $350.00 a month.  We told her she can live with us rent free because we could not afford to pay these loans.  Now my second daughter just graduated from college and we had ...

Obama Petition - It Worked For Student Loans, So Why Not Us?
Oct 27, 2011

Here is what I put in this petition - I tried not to make it specific to MT, as there are more jobs that need to come back than just ours.  Stop the overseas off-shoring of American jobs - at least stop those that contain personal information. (this is the title to search for at "we the people" if the link does not post)Stop the overseas off-shoring of American Jobs will keep American Jobs in American, will keep American money in America. Once that money leaves it will n ...

Do I Need To Take An Actual Coding Course To Learn Coding?
Feb 26, 2014

My sister is taking an online coding course and complains that there is no real "teaching," that she's basically just doing the work in the work book and entering answers online, then taking an online chapter test.  This makes me wonder about the necessity of signing up for an actual course.  I would like to learn how to code, but to me, without any actual instruction, what's the purpose of signing up for one of these online courses? ...

Coding Student, Freaking Out

I am a new coding student -- having taken three classes so far.  I was understanding everything, I thought, pretty well, and while I was not always able to get the right code, I always knew what I had done wrong.  But now V codes.  I can't find anything.   I don't even know what words to look up.   I feel like I'm lost.  Will this get easier?  I'm getting so discouraged.    ...

New Coding Student - Confused!!

I just started medical coding school. I'm just feeling like this is so much information to know, how am I going to remember all of this and be accurate? I hope I'm just overthinking this. Any reassurance would really be helpful. ...

To The Coding Student Who Deleted Her Post

This board is not quiet because the coders are working.  It is quiet because coders can't post here.   This board has a problem with a small number of people, apparently not coders, who have a problem with any and all positive postings.  The description below that they jump on the posts like a pack of hyenas was very apt.  They attack the OP and all responses until they derail the thread and either get it deleted or obstruct the original discussion.  This has prett ...

Future Coding Student...question About College
Jul 12, 2013

Ok, so I thought I had made up my mind on attending Andrews, but there is a certificate course offered by a local college.  This is not a community college but Kent State University.  Now I am wondering, should I try to go through their course to earn actual college credits that will be transferrable to a degree someday or go through Andrews where I know for sure they will prepare me for the coding certifications??  HELP!!! ...

Learn From My Mistake About Picking A Good Coding Program
Jan 20, 2012

I am in my last semester of an HIT program at my local community college.  This program is accredited through CAHIIM.  I actually found this program on the AHIMA website as an approved AHIMA coding program and was so excited that it was in my hometown.  Well, almost two years later and $4000 in student debt, I still have no idea how to code.  Sure, I'm great at Math 101 and English 101 and my anatomy is amazing, but I have no idea how to code.  One class that I have ...

Tax Debt Related To Independenct Contractor Status
Jan 02, 2014

I wonder if anyone else has gotten her/himself into a predicament like mine.  Instead of paying estimated quarterly taxes, I've been trying to pay a lump sum when tax time comes on Apr. 15 each year.  It's a bad situation because I never have the amount that's due to pay.  I've been on an monthly installment plan for 3 years, and I never miss a payment or pay late.  At this point, I still owe for most of 2011 and all of 2012.  I also have a full time ...

Need To Learn New Accounts Or Learn DEP
May 26, 2011

Just got an e-mail today that we have to learn new accounts with new account specifics, in addition to working on our present account. They are sending our present account to India, but still keeping some of it. I don't know which would be easier - volunteering for a new account or learning DEP. I was told that if we start to type on DEP, they will have to send us a new computer with new programs, because we can't have Cornerstone and DEP on the same computer (probably).  I did a ...

Student Rant
Jul 11, 2011

I am months away from completing an "associates degree" in MT at a well-known online "university."  As I have prepared to change careers and start finding a job, I have realized what you all seem to already know...the job pickings are slim at best, and NO ONE wants to hire a newbie.  In short, I have never felt so taken advantage of and just...scammed.  The education I have received is sub-par, with more time spent with unnecessary classes like "Keyboarding" than with classes tha ...
