MT Student with Visual Impairment - Brandi

Posted: Sep 04, 2012

I am a new MT student that is visually impaired. I'm having a very difficult time with studies and keyboarding class. I'd like to find someone that has low or no vision that could tell me how they have gotten through classes and what devises and software systems they may have used.

I feel like I'm out here doing this all by myself.

Thanks,

Brandi

What did your school tell you about how all of this works?

Nothing raally, other than there hasn't been anyone through this program with my issues. I guess I'm paving the way! But I don't know how to do this. I have a CCTV that is helping. But am having a VERY difficult time in my keyboarding class. I can not see the drills that I need to type well enough. HELP!

I cannot help you...but interestingly enough perhaps I can give you a source. While working no Edix a few years ago (good company), a major government contract they had was given to a facility in Dallas called THE LIGHTHOUSE....all sight impaired MTs. No sighted ones were hired. I thought, how could be...and still do not know. But I think this would be about the best source you could find. Apparently they do an excellent job as, as far as I know, they are still typing away for the government.

Hope this helps.
wonder how she can read these posts - ??

strange
She probably has a program that reads the posts for her, such as - tmt
[ In Reply To ..]
if she copied and pasted the post into her program and it read it out loud. I've not researched these programs, but if VR can type what's read, I'd imagine there are programs that can read what's typed.

You could always ask the OP instead of just making a lazy comment...

Your school is failing to meet your needs - SM

Brandi, you need to talk to the people at your school who help disabled students. They MUST meet your needs. It is not an option. You don't want to "pave the way" only to find that you are unemployable at the end! You deserve better than that.

There is a very simple solution to the drill problem. They can enlarge them so that you can see them. Another option would be for someone to record them so that you can type them by listening. That is a very GOOD option because you will learn to transcribe that way.

I had a sight-impaired student. She used recorded books. If there was no recording of the book, someone recorded it for her. Sometimes, she learned the material by having someone read it to her while she typed it into an electronic document so her JAWS text reader could read it.

I agree that you should contact Lighthouse or another organization in your area that assists visually impaired students. Not only do you need assistance now, but you need to know what kind of work you will be able to do when you graduate. With so much of MT going to voice recognition, you need to know how to adapt to that.

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows where to find a list of all the Figures and Tables in the American Medical Association's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, 5th Edition? I work for an ortho who specialises in medicolegal and insurance examinations and we often need AMA 5 references in our impairment reports but because he travels and is generally disorganised, he often can't find his AMA5 book. Short of going to a library and photocopying a million pages mysel ...

How To Transcribe Visual Acuity Results?
Jan 11, 2010

Not sure how to type this out properly.  Dictated is: "Visual acuity is 20 15 minus 1 OD  20 40 minus 1 OS without correction." Now I know O D needs to be changed to right eye, but the numbered part has me hesitant.  Should it be 20/15 -1?  10-15, -1?   I appreciate any insight. THanks. ...

Student Rant
Jul 11, 2011

I am months away from completing an "associates degree" in MT at a well-known online "university."  As I have prepared to change careers and start finding a job, I have realized what you all seem to already know...the job pickings are slim at best, and NO ONE wants to hire a newbie.  In short, I have never felt so taken advantage of and just...scammed.  The education I have received is sub-par, with more time spent with unnecessary classes like "Keyboarding" than with classes tha ...

Anyone (who Has Student Loans For MT School) Try This...
Mar 08, 2014

Not that it would be possible, just something I myself have been looking into.  The trade school I went to, I paid a little over $12k for my MT course of 9 months.  The school is not AHDI certified.  I was told ( Back in 2009) that I could get a job right after graduation and be able to work from home.  I had great teachers who refused to just pass everyone (as some were instructed to do by the school so they could keep their accredidation from the state).   I was going ...

CONSOLIDATING STUDENT LOANS INFO

Has anyone tried to conslidate any kind of student loans lately.  In 2007 my daughter graduated from a private college.  We took out student loans through Sallie Mae and when she graduated we consolidated them with SallieMae.
