We Type Transcription - gracek

I was offered a job with We Type Transcription. The thing is they want me to get a business license, a DBA. The cost in Cook County for everything is $330. So before I invest anything I would like to know about this company. Anyone working for them???

I am interested to know why you would need one. nm - TIA for any answers to both inquiries.

They said it was their policy. I've worked IC before and never needed one. Has anyone else had to do this?

Companies do this to assure you can't come back after them for treating one like and employee. Having a DBA - assures them/the government that you are an Independent Contractor. Just assurance for them. However, with that being said - they would have to be offering a pretty good rate of pay to make me spend the money to get it. This profession just doesn't pay well enough to make an investment as such. JMO

I was being paid 11/cpl for a hospital I used to work for as an employee at $25/hr, so pretty good.

Now I'm in Orlando and was told applying as a sole proprieter is good enough here; haven't used it yet, though.

I see in the ad they mention US positions only and a background check - this makes me wonder if this is a VA contractor. If so, please do yourself a favor and check out the DOL wage determination for that VA account. If you work on accounts for Veterans Affairs, you must have employee status and be paid the Wage Determination Rate specific to that county. See the link below. Even if they call you an IC, you are still an employee and they are required to pay prevailing wages and fringe benefits to equal the hourly wage appropriate for the area.

If you are not being properly compensated, you can file an ANONYMOUS complaint with the DOL.

Just register with your county as DBA under - your name and social sec

without specifying a location? It's interesting. Sometimes (like today) I see remote positions that are not with a service. IDK if you have to actually live near the facilities. It doesn't say that. Anyway, you might find something that way. If I weren't stuck here in North Texas I'd send a resume to every open position in the country. ...

This company is unbelievable....sent resume to them to get a letter back from stating that I had to have a proof of passing a certified HIPAA course which ok I get that but then it goes on to state that they want proof of having $300,000 of general liability insurance and want $250 dollars from me as a deposit on their software. Here is the biggest kicker.....they pay 7 cents a line. That is ridiculous. ...
