Question about Clinic work - Cambria

Posted: Apr 10, 2010

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but....I have been an MT for 20 years doing ER, Radiology and Basic 4.  I'm thinking of taking a job doing Clinic work.  I'm used to lots of lines with ERs and Basic 4, but I was just wondering if you can get enough lines and make enough money doing Clinic work?

I did good with basic 4, now can't get any better than 180 lph straight typing. nm - Sharon

Depends on the clinic, but probably yes - Clinic worker

I do clinic work and it can vary, but 180 is usually on the low end of lph for me. I have done as much as 300+, but that's not sustainable for long periods for me, but I can do it. I average in the 220 to 240 lph range. I have found the clinic work is easier simply because you have a lot of templates and normals that you can use since the doctors and PAs very often use the same phrasing. The other thing I have found is clinics have a lot better equipment so your sounds files are much better. The bad thing with clinic work is it is very repetitious, so it can get a little boring after a while, but it's not bad.

I worked acute care for over 20 years, doing clinic work now going on 3 years. I make more money now because I type the same 3 dictators day in and day out - some places might not have that setup. I use my shortcuts and set up templates to maximize production. The biggest drawback - you lose your comfort with other terminology and a LOT of places require recent acute-care if you decide you'd like to jump back to the basic 4. It can also be pretty boring typing the same stuff over and over. Guess it's a trade off - I'd definitely think it over first!

Well I LOVE clinic work. I have one job that is acute basic four and another that is clinic. On the acute basic four I type between 250 and 300 lph. On the clinic (seriously) I type at least 350-400 lph and sometimes more. I can REALLY make a high hourly wage with clinic because on mine it is basically the same doctors over and over and it is more simple AND I can create templates for myself. I LOVE it!

All I have done is clinic work except for neurology. I could type up to 220 lph or more very easily on a daily basis - that is when the work was available - and made very good money. It is usually the same dictators over and over, which makes it easy,as most of them are redundant in their dictation (templates can be created very easily). Like another poster stated I guess it can be borning - depends on what you are used to typing. I loved it -

The main difference I find with clinic work versus - acute care is in the length

[ In Reply To ..]
of reports. I do find I lose more time with the shorter clinic work getting in and out of reports and then the demographics. It's easy work but can become boring. I keep my hand in acute care for (as another poster states) keeping up with the terminology. As another pointed out, if you were to go somewhere else many require recent acute care rather than distant past.

You Betcha! I worked for two neurologists for 12 years, and they joined a corporation. They went from 30 minutes checkups - 20 minutes checkup - down to 10 minute checkups. They also went from 1 hour consults - 45 minutes- down to 30 minute consults. Their practice increased three-fold. I made good money, but I had to work a lot of 10+ hour days until my mother had a stroke. I had to givee them 30 days notice in order to take care of her, her home and possisions.

You can definitely make good money doing clinic work, and nicely working days, no nights and no weekends.

Thanks for all your answers! (sm) - Cambria

I work at Keystrokes and when I first started 4 years ago I did a clinic for about a week as a backup account. They took me off of it and I just stayed on ERs and basic 4 after that. The reports I typed during that week were pretty short, and like I said, it was only a backup for when my main account ran out. So that's why I was wondering if I could get decent lines if I did clinic work all day as my primary account. Thanks again for all the replies!

Clinic Going VR With EHR

I'm sorry if this topic has been discussed over and over - I'm just starting to research it a bit.  (I haven't completely been under a rock but I have been in my own happy little world with my job ... until now).  I'm an IC transcriptionist (working from home) for a local clinic of 15 MDs/PAs.   Three of them are using Dragon Speak  VR  with EHR.  A fourth one just started.  What I want to know is if there is a place for me when m ...

What Is The Best Way To Go After Your Own Little Clinic Account?
Nov 13, 2010

My company just lost a huge account.  Since then I have not made much money at all.  I am scraping to get by.  After 10 years in the medical transcription field I am fed up.  I have always worked on such great accounts for good money.  Now, I cannot find something that is even average pay.  I am going to be taking a medical coding course; however, I still need to provide for my three kids.  I want to go out and solicit doctors and try to secure my own account, ...

In-house Clinic Pay
Nov 16, 2010

I have an interview with a local eye clinic (there are six surgeons).  Just wondering what kind of salary to expect to be offered or ask for (!), having been paid as a remote MT/VR Editor by production for many years and haven't a clue about salaries in clinics any more.  It is not as an IC but as member of their staff, permanent, full-time, 40 hours a week. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.   ...

Nuance Took Over My Clinic
Dec 10, 2012

I just found out today when I had no work with my smaller company that Nuance took over all the work starting today.  I found out they knew about it 2 months ago and didn't tell us.  I am waiting on the contact information from the original clinic manager at the doctor's office so hopefully we can go with our work.  Has anyone else had this happen and if so how good are the chances of just going with Nuance.  At this point I just need the work.    Thank ...

Been Doing Clinic My Whole MT Career...
Jul 05, 2013

I've been doing clinic my whole six-year MT career. Now since there are not that many clinic transcription jobs anymore, I'd like to learn acute. But of course, all the acute ads say they want experience. I'm confident that I can pass some of the acute care job tests. Are some employers open to giving you an acute care job if you do well on the test, having no actual job experience in it? I went to a good school and am confident in my abilities. What has been your experience in th ...

Overflow Clinic MT
Sep 19, 2013

No idea who that ad on the Job Seekers board is from (Tracy in Lousiana, but no company name). Am I the only one who wondered if the "overflow" 1 to 2 days a week is some atrocious dictator that the person running the ad doesn't want to have to endure? I never thought of farming out the bad dictators when I had my own accounts.  I just did the worst ones first and got them out of the way.   Anyway, not saying that's what the poster is doing but thought it *would* be an int ...

Clinic Notes = No Money?
Apr 16, 2010

I lost my primary accounts recently and was switched to an account where most of the jobs are really short clinic-type notes (less than a minute).  This pay period, my paycheck will be over $200 less than it was when I had my primary accounts, and I'm barely making my minimum line counts.  I've been doing this job for a long time and have always had really good line counts before.  I've been feely really down in the dumps like maybe I've just kind of lost ...

Setting Up Clinic Account

Has anyone started to get more work in the last year (in a clinic setting)? It was steady for me a few years ago, and now I am overwhelmed with the amount of dictation I have!! Each of the doctors I work for are seeing wayyy too many patients in one day, thus more dictating, etc.  Im putting in like 10-12 hour days now, whereas I used to only work 5 or 6. They are scheduling the patients all at the same time, making them wait in the waiting room for a couple hours, and ...

Punished For Emdat Clinic 360?
Dec 08, 2014

Do I understand correctly that we are basically "punished" for working on the Emdat platform via the "platform factor" of all lines x 0.95?  When I work each day, I will have lines that I actually typed deducted simply because I work on the Emdat platform?  I hope I am misunderstanding this. If this is the case, can someone please explain why this would be?  I understand that some people have more difficult platforms, and they should be compensated accordingly, but why are they t ...

Clinic Work On Holidays? Seriously?
Dec 23, 2014

Over the past few days, along with my usual snot and threat-o-grams, I have been getting emails telling me that I have to work the holidays.  I do NO hospital work--just clinic work and 99% of what those doctors do is elective stuff.   Of course, there is no valid reason for this.  The only "reason" my supervisor is sending out this hate mail is because she wants her bonus for meeting Nuance's totally unreasonable TAT.   Unbelievable.  Obscene.  Can't wa ...

Confusion About The Mayo Clinic
Feb 23, 2015

Does anyone know what the latest status of the Mayo Clinic is, with regards to medical transcriptionists?  I remember they laid off something like 118 MT's last summer, and I believe someone here said they outsourced their work to Amphion.  So today I happened to look on the Mayo Clinic homepage under Jobs, and according to that, it says they're hiring "telecommute" MT's.  I can't find any mention of an MTSO... it appears to be a Mayo Clinic ad, not an MTSO ad ...
