My company/career has - lost my respect

Posted: Oct 18, 2012

Work types are being sent to India, which lessens our work load.  Accounts with good dictators are being sent to India.  They outsource to other companies, too.  Also, all of my accounts are overflow.  I am finding myself having to start later and later in the day when work is available.

I have been doing this for over 15 years and have seen firsthand the direction this job is going.  Pay cuts, increased insurance rates.  It doesn't balance itself out in any way.  The benefits no longer outweigh the cons.  I have gone to loving what I do and planning on retiring from it to worrying if I'm going to have enough work to meet my production today or how late into the evening I'm going to have to work.  Guaranteed there is going to be another pay cut in the next year when the final phases of this acquisition are done.

I simply cannot do this anymore and am applying for positions at our local hospital, which will be steady pay, set hours, and better, cheaper insurance.  It's going to be so nice knowing what pay I can expect each pay period and having holidays off!

I just left MT work after 32 years - sad day

What you said above was exactly how I felt. Could not take the low pay, lack of work, lack of feeling like my work even mattered any more. Applied for a job at the local supermarket. Of course, I'm probably too old. What will happen to us now that we cannot make a living at this any more and it is all we have done for so many years?

same here.... - anon

if you have any feasible solutions, please let me know. Such a dilemma. too young to retire...too old to be hired locally for anything more than $8 an hour, which is not a livable wage. thanks.

same here too - broke and tired

[ In Reply To ..]
Too young to retire, no other training for anything else. Minimum wage the only option. How utterly bleak.

Maybe us single ones should start advertising for sugar daddy. lol!
not a bad idea.... - anon

except due to this profession and sitting all day and staying home all day, my outward appearance has deteriorated right along with my income, and nobody would want me either! but if he didn't have to live with me, I may consider it. ha ha.
63, look 43, but employers dont give a rip. Cant - retire, cant live on 3cpl, no savings. sm

Can't even get hired as an in-house MT when I apply. When I apply for other than MT, I know my 35 years of MT-only resume gives them all a good belly-laugh. Cant even afford to buy a gun to shoot myself with. I'm glad CA is building a bullet train in the central valley - maybe I can jump in front of it.
totally understood..... - anon

depression is an awful thing, isn't it? I have lost all of my self-esteem due to these companies. I know I am a good MT but nobody wants us anymore. What else is there? Nobody cares either. Hang in there. We have to, whether we want to or not. sigh.
Never give up. Enjoy the small things in life, like - an ice cream on a hot day

or a cup of tea in the morning (or coffee), take a long walk or pet a kitten. Besides, look on the bright side, you can retire soon and will get SS. Maybe when you do get social security, you can supplement it with a part-time job that you enjoy. There has to be something you enjoy and can get paid doing it.

SAD DAY - gltrgrami

I know it seems sad now, but REJOICE! You do not have to put up with it anymore. Remember, one door closes and another one opens. Keep the faith!

Ditto. Same boat. At least I know I am not alone. - anon

Depression it is. Typed many of those reports and can relate. Relate with you all here. Over 40 years and there is no in-house work...all Nuance. Doctor's offices use VR from the hospitals who give them that service as THEIR extra benefits. We get not even in-house retraining, even after 25 years. The entire departments get the boot. Now all about retirement? On what? Where do we all go from here. I think we are not even in 'binders' as we are now considered in the 47%.

Interview at supermarket - sad day

[ In Reply To ..]
I just got called for second interview at the supermarket. Wish me luck. I am sure I won't earn much, but hey I wasn't earning much anymore in MT work anyway! At least I could be happy and respected there!

Good luck! - lost my respect

[ In Reply To ..]
That's wonderful, and I wish you all the luck in the world! Won't it be wonderful to have a regular paycheck, knowing what the pay will be each week, knowing there's work available and you're needed. :)

Respect as a supermarket employee? Good luck with that.

I am so sorry. Trust me, I feel your pain. I have been doing this for 30 years and boy has it changed. Companies now want more work for less pay, harder dictators, horrible audio and expect it to be 99% accurate, or better. Really! I only have a little over 4 years left and I am retiring, from transcription anyway. Hopefully I can do something I love. I wish you much luck in whatever path you take :-)

Original poster update :) - lost my respect

I applied a couple of weeks ago at our local hospital for a position doing something other than MT. They called yesterday, and I have an interview next week. Prayers please!!!! The pay is good, too.

Good for you, I just finished - now an ex-MT

orientation at the supermarket! So glad I am out of MT work FINALLY!

lost respect for MT work/companies - non

[ In Reply To ..]
We all have lost respect for our work and companies. While having dinner with friends, I told them what my pay has dropped down to with VR, and someone commented that is poverty level income. It is really just very very sad!

Seriously, but (sm) - bermudabahamas

At a friend's birthday party, one of the guests was an old school journalist, someone who needs transcripts of interviews and such on a fairly regular basis. She mentioned that they haven't yet perfected a voice recognition software that can capture more than one voice at a time, so there's still plenty of work in general transcription if you look (that's how I'm getting by, with as much general transcription as I can cram in, with a full time MT job for benefits).

Don't get me wrong (sm) - bermudabahamas

[ In Reply To ..]
I wanna get out of MT-ing ASAP and I'm looking into school programs and such. That'll take a while, though, and I need to eat and pay rent in the meantime. The general transcription work is a total lifesaver right now (yes, I took people's advice and sleuthed around and found companies that pay better than Foxtranscribe. They're okay in a pinch, I guess).

Not the same - Diana

It is a sad thing. I left this field 2 years ago for very much the same reasons. I find it disgusting that in this country of regulations where are the regulations for pay for MT's. We work holidays with many times no extra pay, we have no insurance if you can afford it your lucky, there are no taxes paid by these companies for having IC employees. Its the biggest fraud going on in this country and we all keep going and working for pennies. I went to work as a medical records clerk I needed regular pay I have lost everything had things turned off because of the unsteady income. It is a sad thing and this industry is losing so many qualified people who loved their line of work and took pride in it. I know I did. I have such a bad taste in my mouth. I was offered a typing jobs for .... get this 0.6 per line LOL my teenage daughters make more babysitting.

MT Career
Jul 21, 2010

Just doing a little survey here:  Do you think the medical transcriptionist is becoming more and more obsolete?  I have been in the field for a long time and have already lost a couple of jobs due to technology or work being contracted out.  It seems to be the one job I was always able to find as there was also a need, especially if you're experienced.  Nowadays, we're talking VR, editors, etc. etc. and the pay is not getting any better.  Personally, I have alw ...

My MT Career Is Done.
Jun 30, 2011

I am just a little fish in a big pond, very rarely posted here, but loved to read the posts!  I felt though I had to post tonight as I am very sad. For the last 15 years, I was an MT, but tonight was my last shift and typed my last report - a discharge summary. Same thing I started on all those years ago.  My account is going VR on July 1, and I was told my wage would go from 9 cents a line to 4 cents.  No matter how they crouch it in rah-rah terms (increased produc ...

Career Help
Jul 13, 2012

I am a 47-year-old woman with a BS degree in management who has always wanted to work in the medical field. I began a training program for transcription but have since learned that field isn't promising at this point. I am analytical and have worked in accounting-type positions for many years, and I think I would enjoy coding. From the perspective of someone with experience in the coding field, would you recommend coding as a career or would you suggest possibly RHIA? I would appreciate ...

Almost On To New Career! Bye MT (soon)
Oct 08, 2012

I am about 90% done with my preemployment process at a county position in a neighboring town.  It will not be too soon for me start as we got word today that we lost one of the biggest contracts they had and they wont be getting a new one until February. So let me tell you just how thankful I am that I am not going to have to deal with these issues of MT anymore.  I will be moving on to an employer where I am fully vested at 8 years!  I am 40, so essentially I could retire then! & ...

Considering MT Career... Should I Do It?
Oct 12, 2012

Hi everyone, this is my first post.  I am a military wife, so I'm hoping to start a career where I can work from home.  For now I would only want to work part-time since I have a young child at home, but it would be nice to have the option to work full-time someday.  I've been thinking about becoming a MT for a while now, but lately I've been discouraged because it looks like the job growth has slowed considerably in recent years.  I'm looking into the Car ...

New MT Looking For New Career!!! HELP!
Apr 08, 2013

Well, I wish I would have looked at this forum before going to MT school.  I tried working for two different MT companies.  First one I hated the platform/pay and the second one I really liked the account and platform but my work wasn't "clean enough" and they let me go after two weeks. I think I got canned because I questioned some QA redlines and was told I was wrong (no, no comma.  Yes, you put a comma.  That's hypenated.  No, not hypenated.)  I even ha ...

What Happened To MT Career?
Jun 04, 2010

I am reading on this board and seeing that people from Medquist are being let go, places are being bought out, hospitals are selling in-house to the outside services now.  The services charge a decent amount of money to these hospitals, but we see pennies of it.  What is sad is that what we do is very important, yet we are treated like all we do is type words (and anyone who has done ESL docs know it isn't just words - it's format, it's incorrect pronunciation, inco ...

Confusion Over Mt Career
