All I can do is shake my head .... (SM) - Sick of it all

Posted: Dec 28, 2009

I found an ad this morning that I was so excited about, part-time MT in 2 specialties that I love, started my email to the company when I went back to look at the job ad and it states UP TO 0.7 per line.  Immediately I deleted the email, shook my head and went on looking.  What amazes me even more is that these people/companies who offer these horrible wages generally act like they are doing you a favor!!  Sad, so very sad ....

Don't you think you should put your application in any way? I mean if it's something you love and it happens to be a GREAT account, you could make more at 0.7 cpl than an account with lots of ESL at 0.9 cpl. I think it would be worth at least the application. You can usually tell what kind of work they have when you get the test file and at that point if it's a bad one then I probably wouldn't proceed and waste my time, but you may be passing up an opportunity of a lifetime, even if it is only 0.7 cpl.

will eventually, magically make .07 cpl the base rate.

Translation - experience goes up and pay goes down as time goes by. HELLO.

It's not a question of how easy/cheesey the acount is.

.07 per line - Tara

I understand completely where you are coming from as far as not wanting to take that rate from the start, but unfortunately, we as MT's in the field right now really can't be too picky. If it is easy cheesy then you stand to make a lot of money. If you bypass it for the very reason you stated, there will be someone else who will take it and thereby not changing anything. Also, we need to be thankful for the jobs that are still out there, because .07 cpl per line may not be much or certainly not compared to what it used to be, but this particular company could outsource to India for half the price. This is why a lot of companies have gone that route because MT's think they need to make a boatload of money and won't accept the work if they don't get it. Unfortunately that's the way things are now and the MTSO's can get away with it and nothing is going to change that. They are going to pay what they are going to pay and someone will accept it so by you refusing really isn't hurting anyone except yourself.

That's what I made when I started back in 1981 - susancarol

I'm an MME, and in editing reports these past few weeks I'm noticing a huge number of gender mix ups in the reports I'm seeing.  In some reports, it almost seems to toggle back and forth from he/she/him/her, etc with absolutely no consistency.  It seems to be an ASR issue.  I'm not sure why it's happening but what I AM noticing is that a lot of MTs aren't catching it.  If I am the MME for your report, I will always correct them while I'm fil ...

Banging My Head Against The Wall

I keep getting dinged for comma usage, and I'm not one to overuse them, though I fully support the use of an Oxford comma.  I am old school, and I've been taught the following about commas 1)  They go before a conjunction when what could be complete sentence follows. 2)  They do not go before or after (unless there is a strange circumstance, i.e, "indeed" or some such wording thrown in) a conjunction w/o a complete sentence following it. My hospitals are "modified ver ...
