Do you use all capital letters for SCARF osteotomy? - juice408

Posted: Apr 19, 2011

I have a dr. who consistently says all capital letters for that.  I always thought it was just scarf because it had to do with the type of incision.

I have quoted directly from these websites.

podiatrytoday.com "The term "scarf" is an architectural and carpentry term defined as "a joint made by notching, grooving, or otherwise cutting the ends of two pieces and fastening them together so that they overlap and join firmly into one continuous piece."

books.google.com McGlamry's Comprehensive Textbook of Foot and Ankle Surgery. "Scarf osteotomy, which is known as the Z osteotomy, is performed in the midshaft of the first metatarsal. SCARF, described by Meyer, is with the bone cuts performed in the sagittal versus transverse plane."

SCARF is the original surgery and Scarf is a modification.

This is a perfect example of why we should trust the doctor's knowledge and accept their words rather than inserting our own choice. Any time a doctor specifies a term or spelling, I type it their way.

Incorrect. They are the same. - sm

The McGlamry's reference you provide does not use all caps for Scarf; you altered the transliteration of the sentence and made some assumptions along the way.

SCARF, Scarf, scarf. It's all the same procedure using the scarfing technique. If the dictator wants to see it in ALL CAPS, that's fine by me.

However, you are incorrect in stating that these are two different procedures, and the way you altered the reference was misleading.

One is a modification of the other. - sweetgirlsmom

On Pub-Med, 86 results use Scarf. 3 use SCARF. They are two different techniques for the same procedure and both are correct.

45. First metatarsal SCARF osteotomies. Rev Chir Orthop Reparatice Appar Mot 2007 Sep. (French)

64. The effect of screw type on the biomechanical properties of SCARF and crescentic osteotomies of the first metatarsal. J. Foot and Ankle Surgery. 2003 Mar.

71. The SCARF osteotomy for the correction of hallux valgus deformities. Foot and Ankle 2002 Mar.

Capitalized per scientific journals on Pub-Med - sweetgirlsmom

I always go with the scientific journals instead of MT reference books. The doctors know more about their work than the book publishers.

UNcapitalized per scientific journals on PubMed - sm

Certainly you saw the numerous examples in which they do not capitalize scarf in this context.

It is curious that you are misleading about this in spite of your research.

In fact, I am hard pressed to find an occurrence of the word in all caps in the scientific journals.

Three examples:

Regarding pay, work conditions, etc., the only clear out of bounds complaints we have are 1)  Unpaid work.  The concept that we can do this 'on the clock' is a double whammy. Fair wage and labor standards in your state deals with that or you can form a strong coalition of MTs and find an employment attorney. The one I consulte ...
