Escription has me in tears and questions - Fried

Posted: Nov 04, 2009

After using ExText speech for a couple years, I'm now having to learn Escription. Either I haven't had the right training or I just can't get with it. It doesn't help almost all the work is regular transcribing either, then a speech document, then back to regular transcribing.

I so looked forward to Escription but the keys used are quite different from ExSpeech, and so far it's been a disaster.

The red cursor box: How do you make changes to a word that's wrong? I can't seem to do it.

Does anyone have a problem with their lines not moving up; i.e., I have 10 lines showing on my screen and must minimize and then maximize the program to get past those 10 lines that show; otherwise, I can't see a thing.

Sometimes I get a document that doesn't have sound, yet when I click play audio, it works, but then I can't stop it as it doesn't work with the foot pedal.

Is it all me? What am I doing wrong? Any hints would be greatly appreciated. I really need some help here.Cry

Escription woes - VR lover

I know Escription has a website you might try visiting to see about the issues you are having. As far as the red box, I use my mouse, not the keys and usually have my hand on it thru out the report and easy to just type over the mistake and then hit alt delete and that takes the word out. I have no trouble getting the lines to move. I use my foot pedal and have no issues with that either, when I take the foot up, the pedal stops. I think Escription is a breeze and don't think it is just you but maybe either looking on their site or asking someone in your company for a little assistance.

You should probably speak to someone in tech support where you work. It sounds like the foot pedal is a tech issue and may be some of the other things you mention as well. Did you receive training at all. Escription is the better VR software.

I had training....about a half hour - Fried

We just went through the sign on and screens and what the keys do.

the training for Escription at companies is usually like that, I think. Try the website. I only did about 100-200 lines an hour at first (I was also looking up things for a new account).

You are not alone... - sm

I am finding the same issues. eScription is the worst VR program I have worked on so far,and I have worked on a few. I also have to minimize and max every time I use any function key to be able to see the whole doc. My foot pedal will only work if it is plugged in correctly before I even turn on my laptop. Otherwise, there is no sound.

I wish I could help you out...I am just muddling through...hoping it improves.

Good luck.

I work also on escription and I must say that most of the time the audio is awful!

Do you know if cell phones are used during driving, etc?

I'm having that problem, too. Voice sounds muffled. (nm) - Fried

If Escription VR not working for you then - VR lover

[ In Reply To ..]
you are doing something wrong. I never max nor minimize anything, never. I use no function keys so maybe that is where your problem lies but then we are told by others supposed to use but I don't. My foot pedal has sound as soon as I start the first report. Maybe it is not the platform but your blockage to just using VR or Escription. Why don't you ask for help if you are having such a tough time? Why muddle when you can fly thru reports with it?

I have... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Ive done this for a long time and edited with a few different programs. eS is just a slower, more cumbersome program, and since I have to use an adapter with the foot pedal, they think that is where the problem lies. The min/max problem comes with linking to my expander (for me anyway), and there is no way around it. Too much technology bogs things down instead of speeding them up. It will be fine. It is just a mediocre program with too many glitches..
I wish I could say I know what you are talking about but - VR lover
[ In Reply To ..]
I have absolutely no clue when you say the technology bogs things down. You seem to have issues that I don̢۪t because the speed is fine and very seldom do I have what I would call a glitch.

foot pedal - 7DayMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I occasionally have the problem with the foot pedal not playing the audio. It had to do with the setting for the footpedal in Escription having to be the same as the setting on the computer (the COMS- COM1, COM2). Call your tech support and see if it's that - they can explain it better!
I don't have the problem unless I unplug my footpedal to take the computer somewhere else.

I do use function keys - I like them.
I use shift alt K and alt K to join the cursor and voice. I use them to move from the editing screen to the patient demographics, and to stop and start the audio. When I get a regular job, I use the foot pedal. Took me a few days to get the hang of it.
I'm sure either way can get you a good line count when you get used to it.

So You're Saying you don't use the foot pedal unless - Fried

[ In Reply To ..]
you get a regular job? I have to use the foot pedal all the time.

My text cursor never "joins" the voice. I have to keep doing Alt K to move the text cursor and I'm either behind or ahead of it.

Is this really my problem or is it a tech support problem? I have no idea. I'm trying to learn and not doing very well.

if the audio does not play with the foot pedal - 7DayMT

[ In Reply To ..]
it's a tech problem. You should be able to use the foot pedal if you want to whether it is a regular job or a speech job. I like to use the function keys so I don't use the foot pedal with the VR jobs. Except once in a while when I want to hear something over and over it's less annoying to push on the pedal than keep pushing the keys. But if your audio's not working with the foot pedal call tech support (hope you have a helpful tech dpt).

if you want to use the function keys you have to use shift alt K and alt K. alt k will bring you to the word you want to correct, but shift alt K brings you backward.. try the Escription web site and see if it helps.

but if you really hate the function keys get your foot pedal working and use that... I used it with the other VR (pre-Escription) platforms I did.

Open Express Scribe (Escription, EditScript):

Click Settings
Click Pedal and Hot Keys
Check foot pedal playback control
In Port check USB or Serial (COMs..), depending what foot pedal you are using
In number of pedals: Check 3
Close

Then you have also to click on

Control panel
Footswitch

and set your computer to the same kind of foot pedal USB or Serial (the COMS...)
great - that is what I wanted to say - 7DayMT

You need more training - sapient

[ In Reply To ..]
When our hospital started using eScription they had a rep come out and train us all over 2 entire 8 hour days, then we had follow up training 2 months later for another 8 hour day. We learned a TON and there are so many keys and shortcuts to use, if you don't have at LEAST a good manual, there's almost no way to figure them out on your own.

Your foot pedal, do you have it plugged into a USB port? Hit ALT O, then the foot pedal tab, then change the locatin to USB at the bottom of the list.

You can also minimize your demographics screen so it only shows the basic info, so once you get the headers all filled in hit ALT+SHIFT+E to minimize the header and then ALT+E to expand it back out.

Use ALT+K and ALT+SHIFT+K to move your cursor to your voice box (the red box). That highlights the word that you are hearing and you can delete, move, edit it. Use your arrow keys with the CTL button to move quickly throughout the report if you don't want to use the ALT+K.

Good luck, e-mail me if you want more advice, I might even be able to find a digital version of my procedure manual I can send you.

eScription.com - sapient

[ In Reply To ..]
You should have access to escription.com. In that they have user guides, basically training manuals that tell you everything from how to set it up to all the shortcut keys and problem solving. They are PDF files. I highly recommend you get on there and find the Version 8 user manual. Totally worth the time to read through it.

escription site - finally had time to look into it. - Fried

[ In Reply To ..]
Went to the site. Printed quite a few pages of "unknown to me" of useful information. All I had was 1 page of shortcut keys and whatever questions I had asked.

This will be very helpful. Hopefully, I will be able to dive into it tomorrow.

THANK YOU!

You are very welcome! - sapient

[ In Reply To ..]
I hope you get a chance to really dive in, they have A LOT of stuff to look through, but if you can get a good base of stuff, you should be able to fly through it. Their training guides are actually really good and user friendly.

I'm "fried", too. I have been doing VR...sm - ndmt

[ In Reply To ..]
for almost 2 years and suddenly have to do 99% traditional transcription along with trying to remember all the eScription editing keys for the few reports that straggle in. The alt-K is absolutely NOT working for me. I end up with a row of K's in report and my cursor has still not caught up with the red box.

All in all, it has been a disaster on my end, too. I'm mentally exhausted and tired of being stalked because the account is out of TAT. Honestly, what do people think is going to happen when you change platforms and go from a trained VR program to training a new one? On top of that, there wasn't even an effort to keep the doctors or the work types the same as what you were doing.

I really feel like I am learning this all over again.

Time and time again have said this - VR lover

[ In Reply To ..]
Why are you using the editing keys? Are you forced to do so by your company? I go back and forth between straight and VR work and NEVER use the keys, use a mouse and it works well that way. I do not have to remember alt k this or alt c something else. There is no reason with VR to be mentally exhausated because it is so easy to do. Why are you letting VR get you down when you don't have to? Seriously.

VR and editing keys - vr

[ In Reply To ..]
I think that VR lover is right.
I also work with the mouse and do not like the editing keys. I just cannot remember them, because I do not want to. Also, sometimes one has to use 3 fingers at one time, 2 on the left hand and 1 on the right hand.
I prefer my mouse.

But I must admit that my speed is not outstanding, only good, and I doubt that learning the editing keys would speed me up significantly.
But maybe I am wrong, I just dislike them.
There are mouse persons and then there are keyboard persons.
You are right on this concerning VR - VR lover
[ In Reply To ..]
I have speed as fast as it will go and using the keys would not give me any more than the fast audio can. If I only did VR each day it would be high in the 3000s or 4000s. As it is with straight and VR the pay is good for me.

I think you misunderstood my post, but it was really meant for... - ndmt

Well, Here I Am In Tears Again
Jan 26, 2014

I hate this new job so much and yet I have to work.  Can't survive on Social Security. I was so relaxed and calm on my days off and now that I'm back to work, I'm in tears again. There is way too much "computer crap" for me to learn and I am just so frustrated.  MT has turned into a computerized nightmare for me and I'm sure a lot of other old MTs as well.  My transcription QA has been 100% so there is definitely no problem with knowing how to do transcription ...

In Tears
Feb 27, 2014

Tired of bouncing around. Been an MT for 30 years, 58 years old, last company I was with thought I would be there for at least until I retired, but kept running out of work, and there was a lot of mandatory overtime when the work did build up, and there was no flexibility when it came to vacations and off days. I started with a company and this is my last week of paid training 12 DPH. The pay is good, but they do not pay me for spaces (I knew this when I hired on) but thought I would give it a ...

I Am Just About On The Verge Of Tears
Dec 17, 2009

Several weeks ago, received an e-mail from my CCM, stating that all reports that had gone through the offshore MTs on a particular account had to be 100% QA'd voice to text.  First off, this report had gone through an offshore MT and not one but TWO offshore QA and now has to be 100% QA'd by a US MME on top of it and all changes have to be documented for an audit.  This has been going on for several weeks due to complaints from the hospital on the quality ...

Payday, More Tears

So, decided to rip the band-aid off early and check on my paycheck in Ultipro. Payday--bring On The Tears

I really had hopes this payday after really pouring it on every shift, adding to expansions every shift, using all the "handy hints" they gave us.  Still not cutting it.  Please God answer my prayers and get me out of this stress factory.  And God, if it's not time to get out of here, please, oh please get MQ to do the right thing and "fix" ASR.  Don't make us keep changing dangerous abbreviations.  Don't make us keep fixing "headings" that were not dic ...

Not On The Verge Of Crying, Tears Are Pouring
Aug 06, 2012

I have NEVER cried with a job before. Over 20 years in this world and it has finally brought me to this. A new QA/Team lead has now informed me that the specs are wrong and to do it like she says. Next problem, report had that a patient had her bags stolen from an airline. She had her "big bottle of narcotic pain medicine" in those bags. She called her pain management doctor as soon as she landed. He told her to go to the nearest ER. I could not make out the drug with 100% certainty, so I ...

For a company with technology in its name, I find this platform sorely lacking. Turning Off EScription's Red Box

Is there a way to turn this box off? Our system is not well trained yet so there is a lot of editing required. The alt-K combination is awkward for me when having to stop every few words to correct something.
