Curious - have questions - wrkn4pnuts

Posted: Feb 10, 2010

I have a few questions about VR.

Does the dictation translated by VR need limits on how fast the dictation is spoken, or can the audio be slowed down to accomodate?

On what sort of dictation will VR not work?

If you use VR presently, do you feel you could transcribe and proof faster uisng straight transcription instead?

If you have experience with VR, how confident are you that VR will eventually be used for all medical dictation?

I find it interesting that VR is pushed so much more in our field than in a job like court reporting.

Thanks for your answers.

why 70 people have read my previous post above, but no one will answer my questions?

I do understand if it's because of an agreement with your employer, or whomever, that you can't reveal certain things.

It's because you can only post nice things about VR on this board - VR Sux

Or the VR Lovers will whine to the Moderator. And there is NOTHING nice to say about VR.

To answer your questions:

1. Don't know.
2. The MTSOs will use it for anything they can until complaints from the clients about the garbage in the medical records.
3. Yes, much faster than having to delete the garbage produced by VR, then type the correct words.
4. Not very confident, especially if people actually start reading what is in their medical records.
5. It's because people actually READ the court records so they can't get away with having total CRAP in them.

Any further questions?

Thank you for answering - wrkn4pnuts

In EditScript, you can speed or slow down the speed of the voice file (and, obviously the speed of the red outline box as it highlights the text that matches the voice).

On what sort of dictation will VR not work?

In EditScript, I have not run into any dictation that it will not process. The final product varies with the quality/clarity of the dictation. For dictators the speech recognition engine does not have much "experience" or input from the transcripts are not as accurate as a dictator that has a lot of dictation in the system. Some dictators after VR have few, if any changes, that need to be made.

If you use VR presently, do you feel you could transcribe and proof faster uisng straight transcription instead?

In EditScript, I am producing about 3x the lines I produced when transcribing. There is a learning curve as a VR editor though and I would say it took about 2 months to reach that level.

If you have experience with VR, how confident are you that VR will eventually be used for all medical dictation?

Been doing this for 40 years, and I have noticed managers and decision makers love technology. There has always been a problem paying predominantly women for "just typing." I see more and more companies using technology as well and using VR.

I find it interesting that VR is pushed so much more in our field than in a job like court reporting.

What you will find are widely varying experiences in VR. Those that love it and those that hate it and post here often.

I love it, but I researched the "talk" and went with a company that uses EditScript. The talk here is that M*Modal with Scribe platform and EMDAT/InScribe platforms is a very poor VR engine.

I am very happy with it. Hope this helps.

Or, as they say, these results not typical. - VR Sux

As you can see from most of the posters on the other, not so nice boards, VR is a total ripoff for the MT and only worth it for the suits. More and more MTs are refusing to drink the VR Kool-Aid.

Keep it in mind: These results not typical.

"Just typing" (long) - wrkn4pnuts

You are right about the perception that what we do is "just typing" (or one I heard recently, "data entry"). When I encounter another medical professional for the first time, I hesitate to tell them my occupation, because their responses at times have been downright rude and condescending. Anyone who hasn't done this for a living has no idea of the effort it takes to do it well. Personally I think VR is a streamlining effort to eventually try to use any warm body they can get off the streets, or offshore. Whether it will actually work or not is another story. I mean no offense to anybody by saying this if you are one who likes VR and uses it - I could be wrong. It's just my opinion. I believe the chances of this remaining a good-paying job are gone. What has ruined it for American MTs mostly has been plain old greed and offshoring, as well as the fact that American MTs just do not have decent professional representation. Compare the representation of American MTs to that of court reporters, who have a presence on Capitol Hill - they have an organization that works for them, the NCRA. Sure, there are differences in the jobs MTs and court reporters do, but there are also a lot of similarities. We deserve good representation. But I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon if at all, because too much control has been handed over to people who abuse that control. IMO, and no offense intended, but some of us are not used to standing up for ourselves, and I think sometimes because of that we are taken advantage of in the area of pay. To me MT has become a sweat shop. I am getting out and soon. Frankly I'm burned out, and tired of seeing my pay continuously go down. I just do not enjoy it anymore. Sitting all day long to work for 20 some years has not been good for my physical health. I'm tired of working all the time to barely make my bills, and then have to hand so much of it over to the government. God knows, I need it more than they do.

I want to answer only 2 questions: - see inside

I work with EScription, where there are 3 levels of speed: slow, as dictated and fast. When I transcribe straight, slow is too slow, and usually "as dictated" is too fast, and fast is "chipmunkish."

When I have VR slow is too slow, and "as dictated" is o.k.

I think that now even VR is becoming outdated, the newest technology and trend is EMR. I posted today in the morning on the Main Board an article from Yahoo news that the government made a grant of million $$ to educate health care provider in EMR.

VR is a ripoff for the MTs. I have been in this business 20 years. I can type a report faster than editing bad copy. VR is being pushed by the corporate world because they are trying to make more money by spending less for skilled labor, and so far they are succeeding. They have no idea what knowledge and skill it takes to translate these bozos. Only when enough of us refuse to work for peanuts might we get somewhere.

I know why I've been an MT for so long.  I've had long periods in and out of the industry.  I'm on my way out for the final time now.  I've been interviewing and it looks good. My question is this.  Why are YOU an MT?  What is keeping you from getting a good job that pays you what you deserve instead of servant wages?  What is holding you back from your self-respect? With me, it's my bad temperament and my general dislike of people.   ...

As I just got of a dictation with variable volumes and of course the eventual hang up with the loud dial tone, seems to me we could make a real good case for a worker's comp hearing loss problem. Not so much to collect now but to make an argument that they need to fix the volume on the system and maybe actually train the doctors to dictate correctly or be liable for lawsuits before we all go deaf. Too late for me, the ringing is staggering at this point. Thoughts anyone ...
