FTP server on the cheap? Anyone use Core FTP Server? - MovingOn

I'm starting to pick up some local MDs on my own and was wondering how to set up a FTP server. I have used Core FTP in the past to access files on a server for another company I worked for, but now I want to set up a server for myself and my clients' use. I've googled until my eyes bleed but it's all a bit over my head (and I'm usually pretty tech savvy). Right now I only have 1 client so I would like to do this using something rather inexpensive (free is great too!) until I can build up a clientèle to justify paying a fee. I know Core has a "mini server" that is free for 1 domain & 2 users/connections, which is fine for my use right now. Their regular server is $50 per license (is this just my end or do I have to purchase one for every client?) Anyone have any experience with this?

I've thought about going "cloud" by using my Office Live Workspaces that came with my Office Live Small Business website but they're going to be phasing that out in the next year and moving to a monthly fee service that doesn't even seem to allow me to upload audio files, not to mention I doubt "cloud" is HIPAA complaint right now.

If there are other options out there, please let me know! I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

But keep in mind before you go ahead:

1 - You need a static IP address from your ISP (internet service provider) for an additional cost. This static IP address will be the host address for your clients to access your computer.

2 - A state-of-the-art firewall software to prevent intrusions. You will be keeping sensitive data on your system.

3 - Make sure to have dedicated internet connection (atleast of 1mbs/sec) that shouldn't go down in any case. Otherwise, your FTP sever will be offline. Don't forget to ask your ISP about your Uplink speed. What you use is the Downlink speed for browsing, etc. What your clients will be using to access your computer to upload/download files is Uplink speed. Mostly, ISPs charge for providing Uplink connection and speed because they know you will be using it for commercial purpose (e.g. hosting).

4 - Backup hard drive and backup power supply is mandatory as well.

I would suggest you to set it up in case of huge clientele and data transfers. If you have few clients, go with the FTP service providers, the average price is $10/month for 5 clients.

Can someone please tell me what the problem is when every hospital dictation now sounds extremely muffled with a humming sound in the background.? Having trouble with InScribe's server/program again. Seems to happen more often on weekends. I just did a very long report, and it won't seem to upload (not showing up in my Transcription Log).
