DAS keyboard? - SAM

Posted: Sep 03, 2013

Thinking about taking the plunge and investing in a DAS tactile keyboard.  It's a bigger investment than I've ever made in a keyboard.

Does anyone here use a DAS keyboard or have used one?  If so, any feedback about it would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!!!

Not a DAS, but I have 2 mechanical keyboards, and I'll never type - on anything but mechanical ever again.

Long story, but I use one tenkeyless Leopold keyboard for each hand, separated by about 18" (I got used to a totally separated ergo keyboard that isn't made anymore, so this is my improved makeshift take on that).  Not sure what the choices are for DAS, but I have blue Cherry switches, which are fairly loud but provide the tactile, clicky feedback I crave, having cut my teeth on Model M keyboards back in the day.   DAS has a good reputation, and whenever I have to eventually replace these, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a DAS or a maybe a Cooler Master or some other Cherry keyswitches keyboard in the future.

If you do get a mechanical keyboard (which I highly recommend, regardless of brand), I'd recommend doing an O-ring modification on your keys, as we MTs tend to type fairly hard and bottom out.  Nice cheap little upgrade that really improves the feel and sound.  I got my first ones (black Buna) at some online hardware-type parts store, but they started cracking and breaking after about a year, so my current set, which is a little more expensive, came from WASD Keyboards.  So far so good, and I think they're going to hold up longer.

It would appear we are of like minds, because I, too, became absolutely spoiled by the industrial-strength M model keyboards. Those are what I learned transcription on and, even though it probably makes me sound like an old dog who can't learn a new trick, I crave that particular type of keyboard. I'm sure I'm at least 25% faster on a tactile/mechanical keyboard.

I think I'm going to go for the DAS. I believe it comes with a pretty impressive warranty as well and, heck, I can write it off on taxes anyway, so I shouldn't have a spasm over the price. The darned thing will probably pay for itself in the first week with the increased productivity, LOL!

Thanks for your input and glad I'm not a lone wolf in loving those Model M's!

There we go, how about resolute old she-wolves instead of old dogs - unable to learn new tricks? ;)

It amazes and saddens me to think of all the MTs and typists in general who have no idea the difference in feel of a good clicky keyboard compared to the mushy rubber membrane keyboards that are so standard now.  Yeah, it's a little more expensive to go mechanical, but it helps make typing more of a genuine pleasure rather than a chore.

Best of luck with your new keyboard.  I'm sure you'll enjoy it much, much more than anything non-mechanical you've been working on.  :)

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro...need A New Keyboard, Any Recommendations?
Apr 03, 2010

Microsoft has discontinued these great keyboards and I need a new one.  Anybody aware of a split keyboard that has a really nice touch (remember those old IBM keyboards?) for transcription work by Microsoft or another brand that you really like? I'm open for suggestions please ; 0  My only complaint with this one is the keys are a bit clunky to press down (especially the space bar).  Thanks! ...

Anyone Using This Keyboard?

... the TypeMatrix (see link at bottom) If so (or otherwise) anyone using the Dvorak key layout?  Actually I was just trying to search for fast keyboards (as it seems like my keyboard is slow to react), and came across info on this.  Aside from the initial question, any tips on a regular keyboard with fast reaction and highlighting ability appreciated as well.  (I prefer an uncurved keyboard that isn't real large though.)  Thanks for any info you can give me! ...

Best Keyboard
Jun 21, 2011

I am going to be looking for a new keyboard.  I see most of you seem to like the split keyboard.  When I tried that at one time I couldn't get used to the 6 being on the wrong side of the keyboard (I use my right hand for it), for one thing.  Is this something you just get used to or do you all not have that problem to begin with?  Does anyone have an ergonomic keyboard that is not split that they like?  ...

Need New Keyboard
Sep 13, 2014

Hello all, I am in need of a new keyboard.  I am using a Goldtouch now but the keyboard configuration does not really work for me, specifically the cntl, alt, and windows keys, as well as the home key.  I hit the wrong keys frequently, too much, and it hurts my production.  I do like the "touch" of it though.  I would like something that feels the same, a little bit spongy but not sticky.  Any suggestions.  TIA. ...

Keyboard
Jun 25, 2015

Hello, I am using a Microsoft split keyboard that is just about worn out and would like to know what most of you are using now. After using a split keyboard I do not think I could go back to a regular keyboard. Also, I keep the keyboard slanted to the left slightly which is more comfortable for me, probably because I am left-handed, but it does make to getting to some of the keys on my right hand a little difficult. Anyhow, just curious to see what most of you are using now. Thanks. ...

Footpedal Or Keyboard.sm

For those of you who are experienced with VR, do you use the footpedal to control the audio or the keyboard.   I am new to this.  I am used to using the footpedal but have heard from a couple of others that using the keyboard to control audio seems to be faster for them. I would like some opinions please.  Also, maybe you could tell me how long your learning curve was.  How long did it take to get your speed up to the point that you were making what you could make trans ...

When Do You Replace Your Keyboard
Jun 14, 2011

I'm trying to stockpile a 2-year supply (wishful thinking?) of Memorex TS1100 keyboards.  I don't think they are being made any more, so I find them on eBay. I use them untill all the print is off the letter keys, all the plastic is gone from several of the letters leaving the metal exposed, there is a piece missing on the space bar where my right thumb goes, and then I dump them.  Do you think I should them longer than this.  I've only ever had one STOP working (I ...

Love My New Keyboard!
Mar 21, 2012

Finally sucked it up and bought a Kinesis Advantage keyboard. Wanted one for at least 10 years, but couldn't justify the cost, but after typing off my laptop for a few months and quickly developing tennis elbow, it was time to make the switch.  I love this thing! My arm pain is gone after just a week, and I love that I actually type faster when I maintain good posture; when I slump, my fingers are positioned correctly to go very fast. I also love that the key "connects" halfway down, s ...

EZ Eyes Keyboard
Mar 26, 2012

I type many hours a day several days a week and usually use the old clicky keyboards but thought I'd give this one a try.  Don't waste your money.  It's smaller than a standard keyboard with big letters on the keys and it's so light it moves constantly. You nearly need to velcro it down.  The touch is hard, makes your hands very tired and the backspace is in an odd position to you constantly hit the wrong key or have to stretch your pinky out a couple of inches ...
