When do you replace your keyboard - L&L

Posted: Jun 14, 2011

I'm trying to stockpile a 2-year supply (wishful thinking?) of Memorex TS1100 keyboards.  I don't think they are being made any more, so I find them on eBay.

I use them untill all the print is off the letter keys, all the plastic is gone from several of the letters leaving the metal exposed, there is a piece missing on the space bar where my right thumb goes, and then I dump them.  Do you think I should them longer than this.  I've only ever had one STOP working (I spilled coffee on it and shorted out the right-sided keys).

Just looking for some ideas...I really really like this style of keyboard and hope I can make it 2 more years in this biz.

You need more than one of these to last you two years??? - Wow

I have an MS ergo 4000 keyboard which is coming up four years old and still going strong. A few of the letters have worn away and it's due for a clean again (I take off the keys every now and then to clear out the dust, cat hair and crumbs that accumulate) but it's certainly a long way from needing replacing. I have the previous keyboard (a Logitech one, not ergonomic but it works) as a backup to tide me over when this one eventually dies - Murphy's Law says that will happen 5 minutes after the stores close on Christmas Eve!

I have had 2 MS ergo keyboards in the last 4 years and clean it every month or so, depending how bad the crud is (I HAVE to stop eating at my desk!)

I pop the keys and clean with Pledge and a rag. When it's done, it looks brand new, except for the blank keys (e, r, t, s, d...you get the idea).

How much do those cost? I had a Logitech and HATED it. - L&L

I admit, these are cheap, but they are spill proof. I've bought 70$ and 80$ keyboards and given them away. I don't want to keep trying others out. I wear out (like in my original note) about 2 or 3 a year, I think. I have large finger pads and for some reason strike hard. Been doing it this way 35+ years and no carpal tunnel problems.

How much do you spend on a keyboard?

Looking For A New Keyboard To Replace MS Natural Elite.
Jun 30, 2013

Has anyone found a good replacement for their Microsoft Natural Elite keyboard? I'm trying to find something with the same, or very similar, keypad layout. I have a Kinesis Freestyle and just cannot get used to the placement. Very frustrating. I then bought a Microsoft Ergo 4000 and found out afterward many people (myself included) are complaining about a design flaw with the spacebar. An Amazon seller has a Natural Elite for $189, a bit out of my price range right now. So, if anyone has an ...

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro...need A New Keyboard, Any Recommendations?

Microsoft has discontinued these great keyboards and I need a new one.  Anybody aware of a split keyboard that has a really nice touch (remember those old IBM keyboards?) for transcription work by Microsoft or another brand that you really like? I'm open for suggestions please ; 0  My only complaint with this one is the keys are a bit clunky to press down (especially the space bar).  Thanks! ...

2-3 Newbies To Replace 1 Veteran MT
Nov 02, 2010

Just read another interesting article in that it is estimated that it will take 2-3 newbie MTs to replace 1 veteran MT.  Something all these corporate MTSOs better start thinking about.  Once they run all the veteran MTs off, find demand is shifting back to onshore transcription, then what are they going to do.  Even if they pay newbies lets say a mere 6 cpl...that's 18 cpl if it takes 3 to replace 1 veteran, and the veteran makes probably 9 cpl (maybe 10) so it is costing th ...

Woke up to my computer dead (2.5 years old).....shut it down last night, no problems.  Did not notice if the blinking light(of the power button) was on or not last night when I went to bed.  In any case it was off this morning which is not the norm.  DOA.  Tried the obvious, unplugged, replugged in different outlet, etc.  Nada.  Have another old Dell here (has hard drive issues not power supply)  thought maybe I could switch out the power supplies, don ...

Best Keyboard

I am going to be looking for a new keyboard.  I see most of you seem to like the split keyboard.  When I tried that at one time I couldn't get used to the 6 being on the wrong side of the keyboard (I use my right hand for it), for one thing.  Is this something you just get used to or do you all not have that problem to begin with?  Does anyone have an ergonomic keyboard that is not split that they like?  ...

Need New Keyboard
Sep 13, 2014

Hello all, I am in need of a new keyboard.  I am using a Goldtouch now but the keyboard configuration does not really work for me, specifically the cntl, alt, and windows keys, as well as the home key.  I hit the wrong keys frequently, too much, and it hurts my production.  I do like the "touch" of it though.  I would like something that feels the same, a little bit spongy but not sticky.  Any suggestions.  TIA. ...

Keyboard
Jun 25, 2015

Hello, I am using a Microsoft split keyboard that is just about worn out and would like to know what most of you are using now. After using a split keyboard I do not think I could go back to a regular keyboard. Also, I keep the keyboard slanted to the left slightly which is more comfortable for me, probably because I am left-handed, but it does make to getting to some of the keys on my right hand a little difficult. Anyhow, just curious to see what most of you are using now. Thanks. ...
