Go to * keyboard stroke - Nana

Posted: May 06, 2010

Does anyone know how to create a keyboard stroke to "go to" a * in Word 2007?  For example:  Physical Exam:  Respirations *, Weight *, etc.  When you have a template or macro for the PE and you need to just go to the * and fill in............

Thanks so much!

I just got 2007 and have not really played around with it yet, but open a word document, on page layout screen on the far right there is a blue circle with a ?. click on that and a search box will appear, type in macro and a result box give you choices. there is one for create macros that should help you.

I have tried this but it only allows you to make a keyboard stroke for the *, not a "go to" keyboard stroke for it. At least I cannot find a way to make this happen. :(

Hope I understood your question correctly - Try this

I hope I understood your question.  Your comment “When you have a template or macro for the PE” kind of concerned me because you cannot use a macro within a macro.  If it is a template, this macro should work.

Here are the instructions from HELP for Word 2007   (comments that I added are in blue)

IMPORTANT:  Have a sample report already on your screen in your Word 2007 document that has some place markers already imbedded.

1.  On the Developer tab, in the Code group, click Record Macro.

2.  In the Macro name box, type a name for the macro.   (If you put in a name that it does not like, you will probably hear a tone and your keyboard will lock up.  Just hit ESC and start over).

IMPORTANT Note:   If you give a new macro the same name as a built-in macro in Office Word 2007, the new macro actions will replace the built-in macro. To view a list of built-in macros, on the Developer tab, in the Code group, click Macros. In the Macros in list, click Word Commands.

3.  To make your macro available in all documents, be sure to that the Store macro in shows: Normal.dotm.

4.  In the Description box, type a description of the macro.  (for example:  Go To *)

5.  Click the KEYBOARD button

You will go to the next screen.

6.  Go to Press the shortcut key.   (Enter what you want to use to get to the * -- For example:  If you want to use the ALT Key and the “G” Key, you would do exactly that – press ALT and G at the same time)

7.  Click:   Assign

8.  Click:   Close  (You will see what looks like a cassette tape hovering over the document.  This shows that you are recording.)

9.  Type in whatever you want the macro to do.  In your case, you want to Find the next * place marker.

          CTRL+F

          Type in *

          Click:  Find Next

This will take you to the first place marker of * that is in the document you are working on.

          Click:   Cancel

You are done.

10.  Go back up to the Developer and click Stop Recording in the Code group.

Type in what you need to at the *.  Then to get to the next *, simply use the ALT+G (or whatever you named your macro).

Hope that was not too confusing.

Omg! What a lifesaver you have been for me! :) Thank u, thank u, thank u! I have this saved now and will be able to help others......God bless you!

You can also use Word's built-in shortcut for jumping to blank fields. - SM

Press Ctrl+F9 everywhere you want to jump to in your template. Then just hit F11 to jump to the next field or Shift+F11 to go back to the previous field - this is great if the doc dictates out of order of the template. You can also reassign the built-in shortcuts if you don't like stretching your fingers to the F11 key.

Need New Keyboard
Sep 13, 2014

Hello all, I am in need of a new keyboard.  I am using a Goldtouch now but the keyboard configuration does not really work for me, specifically the cntl, alt, and windows keys, as well as the home key.  I hit the wrong keys frequently, too much, and it hurts my production.  I do like the "touch" of it though.  I would like something that feels the same, a little bit spongy but not sticky.  Any suggestions.  TIA. ...

Keyboard
Jun 25, 2015

Hello, I am using a Microsoft split keyboard that is just about worn out and would like to know what most of you are using now. After using a split keyboard I do not think I could go back to a regular keyboard. Also, I keep the keyboard slanted to the left slightly which is more comfortable for me, probably because I am left-handed, but it does make to getting to some of the keys on my right hand a little difficult. Anyhow, just curious to see what most of you are using now. Thanks. ...
