VPN and internet access (Phoenix Medcom) - wonderingmt

According to their job posting, you would not be able to access the internet while connected to the VPN. I was wondering if this would affect ALL computers using the same internet connection. For example, my son connects to the internet on his laptop in my home via wireless connection. If I were logged onto the VPN, would he also be blocked from accessing the internet? Would really appreciate any info from anyone working for Phoenix or with a similar VPN setup. Thanks!

(Wasn't sure exactly where to post this question, but I didn't put this on the company board because it is more of a technical question than anything, I think)

As far as I understand it. I've been doing some research on them myself the last couple of days for something else.

Essentially, though, you download VPN software and then you connect your computer through that network instead of your regular gateway of internet explorer, Firefox, or what have you.

If your son is not connected to that VPN, it shouldn't affect him even if you are.

I'd have to really wonder about their vpn, though, that blocks everything else out so completely and I would really haev second thoughts about installing that on my own personal computer, but that's just me.

You will have a long-on ID and password for the VPN which will then take you to the facility system for another set of log-on ID/password. Only the person logged on the VPN will be blocked, everyone else is fine.

Also, some VPNs block the net, others do not. I think it's a company option depending on their idea of security measures, or just not wanting workers 'playing' while working. Little do they know it's our reference lifeline, nor will they listen to us on that. It's just a setting that can be turned on or off by the company's IT department.

I've worked with many different VPNs, blocking internet or not. It messes with nothing on your computer or anyone else's in the house. You'll be fine.

I was fortunate to have 2 fully working computers. When I was working on the PM VPN, I was able to just swivel my seat and use Google as needed for looking things up.

If an MT has just 1 computer, it would be a total pain in the backside, though.

As others have said, it is only on the computer you are using and won't affect others in the home. Just remember that you won't be able to use the internet for reference and research. It worked for me because I have two computers side by side at my work station - one for work and one my PC.

VPN is ONLY on the computer you are using for work. With some VPN settings (such as Phoenix Medcom the OP mentions), you will not be able to access the Internet on your work computer.

In my case, I used use my PC/personal computer (set up next to my work computer) to access the internet for Google/research.

Having worked for PM on their VPN, I can attest there is no internet access on the computer from which you are working, at least on my account.

Their ad also specifically says there will be no internet resources while working through their VPN.

I have worked for other companies where the internet was available even with the VPN, but PM is not one of those.
