Phoenix Medcom - business card from each IC - jan2
Posted: Jun 12, 2012
Phoenix Medcom requires a business card from each IC contracting with them. I was an IC many years ago and didn't even have a contract then; have been an employee ever since that time. So, do each of you who work as an IC have business cards? And whose contract is it - yours of the company's? Thanks. (and if it's the IC's contract, where do you obtain that?)

This company says they do not want entry-level MTs, but are only offering entry-level pay. That says a lot! No one worth their salt works for 0.07 cents!

Thanks. I was asking various questions about working as an IC. Could you answer those? Thanks again.

I have been an IC for 10 years. I have never been asked for a card of any kind. That is not a reasonable request. Anyone can make a card and pass it off as a business card. It proves nothing and coupled with the low pay, would be enough to keep me walking...Not worth jumping through the hoops.
IC and presenting "cards" - devilsadvocate

Actually, it is quite common for a MTSO to require IC's to provide business cards and the like. It is, by definition, part of being an IC, soliciting your own work and proving that you do.
I work as an IC, have for 6 years, and had to get my own business name (registered through the state), provide proof that I solicit my own work and sign a contract for services.
For those that are saying it's a "deal breaker" - check he definition of an IC and see what the actual requirements are. I think you will be surprised.
Yes, ScribeRight required all their employees to get - a business license, sm

to work for them. It isn't difficult to do. A lot of this depends on the state you live in.

So how many of you IC's are registered through the state?

Check with your state; it's not required in mine for medical transcriptionists. My employer did ask for it, but I forwarded information from my state saying it was not required here.

California requires we have a business license, and each city has their own rules and fees. In my city, we cannot have "traffic," and my landlord had to sign a statement stating I could run my business outside of the apartment.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I got 4 years on your experience and this is the first advertisement I have ever seen that asked for a card. A card should not be required. It proves nothing, like I said. A monkey can make a card. It's simply a hoop to jump through. The next step would be liability insurance. That way we will all end up making 3 cents a line on straight typing if we are lucky. Ya gonna do that too?

and kiss your feet because you have 4 more years of experience? Who gives a...
Anyway it is NOT PhoenixMedcom or ScribeRight or whatever MTSO requiring the card, it's the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, so apparently YOU may have more experience in typing, but less in tax and business law.

The federal government does not require a document that can be mass produced by anyone. Do your homework! Gotta get back to work!
Shoot, I just willy nilly made one in MS Word - and gave it to them. Pay is too low tho, left soon

I worked for them briefly. I too had to get a card and I went to Office Depot and got the minimum made which was 50 cards for $16.00. I only needed one. I guess I could have made it on my computer if I knew how. So I go to work for them and thinking very positive thoughts about this company and truly hoping for the best, then I get the dictation. OMG. I had sound quality that was beyond belief, so I was told to buy a USB head set ($41.00), which I did. Then I would miss something and they would not tell me how to fix it. Read the manual, all 100 pages of it, but all they had to do was tell me the authenticated box is next to the cc box. I had so many go rounds and I just could not do it, no matter what I did or how hard I tried. I worked one day for two hours and did 4 reports. Then they gave me the final notice so to speak. I had until the end of the week to get off QA. I never typed another word for them. I was done. Again, it is so hard to get started with these companies. I do feel this is one of the better ones despite the low pay, but just waaaay to many hoops to jump through. I had to move on, so I moved onto Hands On and that was a total nightmare. I am just sticking with my one account now and trying to make due and just hope it doesn't go south!

They will never get anything but entry-level MTs with a laughable wage like 0.07 cents. Give me a break!
ic status - me
[ In Reply To ..]
First off, don't take a job paying 7 cpl for IC status. They're making enough to keep them all living in nice homes, driving nice cars, etc so they can afford to pay more than 7 cpl.
You can go to Staples, buy Avery Business Cards, and print one. It's as meaningless as writing your name on a piece of paper and handing it to them, but whatever they think is covering their collective arses I guess.
And the TRUTH is that if you are offered a position as an INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR, YOU should be the one writing up the contract with YOUR terms in it. (Now, you have to remember if your terms don't match their terms, they're not likely to use you.) I'm sick to death of these companies who want employees but call them ICs, short-change them benefits/PTO, pay them crap and then place emphasis on a stupid business card.

ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON!!!!!!!!! Thank you! The rest of you who wish to cave to this requirements...have fun! IC means you are your own boss and set your own hours.....AND pay. At 0.07 cents per line...you would make more working at McDonalds. If you take this job, yeah, you'd be working at home...and still starving to death.
actually - me

IC doesn't mean you get to set your own hours. I mean technically I suppose it does. But in reality, if you take on a client who says, "I need work covered from 8a to 8p" you *DO* have the option of saying no you'd rather work 8p to 8a and then they have the option of not using you as a vendor. :D They are allowed to give you a schedule.

I received a response letter from them and it says for over 600 lines it is 8 cpl
