Speakers versus headset when working - ringing ears

Posted: Jan 26, 2011

Does anyone use speakers instead of headset when transcribing/editing?  I have always used a headset (been in this field for about 20 years), and the more I work, the worse the ringing becomes in my ears.  I believe it is directly related to the headset (which does not insert into my ears--got away from that one because it really made it worse).  I try to keep the volume as low as I can.  Anyone opt for using speakers instead or the headset.  Anyone have similar symptoms I am describing? If so, how do you deal with it? I am fearful I am damaging my hearing.

Thanks!

The ringing is so loud at night when it is quiet in the house that it drives me crazy. Have not found anything to get rid of it. My sister does legal transcription and has the same ringing. I guess it is one of the hazards of our job.

I will actually use speakers whenever I can....BUT - Hayseed

The audio for that particular file that I chose to use the speakers on has to be spot-on. I won't do it for anything but the clearest of dictators and superb audio quality, so those files are sadly few and far between but I find every little break from the headset is definitely helpful.

I have constant ringing in the ears now that I have just learned to live with. I know it is most definitely a side effect of the job. I have to sleep with a "noisy fan" (white noise maker) to actually drown out the sound of my ears ringing...it's been this way for a good 6 years now.

Lots of jobs are going to have detriments to our health. For a desk job though, this one seems to have an inordinate amount, especially for the downturn in wages/benefits/etc that once helped to balance that, in my opinion.

Give it a shot and see how it works for you. Certainly can't hurt.
:)

I have tinnitus. I run files thru my Bose for those dictations - that are impossible to hear. nm

This may sound crazy, but I have pretty much lost hearing in my left ear going on 5 years now. Everything is very muffled in that ear, but my right ear is perfectly fine. My question is related to the "Bose" comment though...are you talking about Bose brand headphones? Are they the best, where can you get them, and at what price?

No, I mean Bose radio. Got a cable from Radio Shack, plug - into earphone jack on laptop SM

and plug other end into back of radio and the dr talks through the radio, lol. Also bought pair of Bose speakers that I do the same thing with but plug cable into earphone jack of MP3 player.

I do lots of jobs where ppl think hearing is bad but is really - just build up of cerumen. nm

Thanks, but I've been checked out and cerumen is not the problem. I have some crazy fluid thing going on, actually had a doc who pumped a whole lot of fluid out of my ear (a VERY unpleasant procedure) and 10 minutes after I left his office the ear was plugged up again. NOT going back to him! Any other ideas???
Sorry, no. Cerumen is the extent of my vast medical - knowledge of the ear. nm

Did he mention Meniere disease? - X

I was just wondering if the doctor mentioned the possibility of Meniere disease. I'm not super educated on the condition, but I remember reading about it when I developed tinnitus and vertigo. I hope you get the problem resolved or at least help with it.

No, I don't think he mentioned it, but then again I only gave him the one chance so maybe that would have been the next thing out of his mouth. I have done some research and agree Meniere might be a possibility, but frankly everything I have read so far indicates such a small chance of help without a great outlay of cash (something we transcriptionists are getting less and less of) that I pretty much have resigned myself to just living with it the best I can. Hope the other ear doesn't go though, then what'll I do for a job???? Im 57 and too young for disability or social security without big penalties, so I have to keep working. Thanks for your concern, though!

One Side Of Headset Not Working
Aug 11, 2010

Hi, one side of my headphones quit working.  Any ideas?  - It is the same way no matter what I listen to so not the fault of transcription software.  thx for any ideas.  Sounds stupid, but I can't remember what they are now ... but I think Transcription Gear (sounds right).  They have the big ear buds that don't really go into the ear and have the volume control along the wire.  They aren't all that old either. Any ideas appreciated!  ...

MM Doesn't Send Speakers With Their Computers Anymore?
Jul 19, 2012

My MQ/MM speakers, which I plug in my head phones into, quit working. The techs called me and said they no longer send speakers with the computers. I was told MTs are plugging the head sets into the computer directly and using a head set with the volume dial on the head set. Is this true? ...

End Point Versus Endpoint And Hand Grip Versus Handgrip
Mar 13, 2012

Two words that come up often for questioning.  These are strictly used in an orthopedic setting.  Stedman's and Dorland's list end point and hand grip HOWEVER the office transcription manager,  girl is asking for me to correct this to endpoint and handgrip. She is only basing this on what an old medical transcription company she used to work for had her typing. I would rather base it on the  medical reference. The doctors are not even aware this has come up. She is ...

Got My New Headset
Aug 23, 2011

I am sorry to say that my old ones work better for me.  I think they would be ok, but I get a lot of (what I think is) cellphone audio, and they just don't work as well for that.  I have tried switching back and forth while working to test them, and then I always end up using my old ones.   I like the way they feel though.  It was worth a try. ...

Aluminum Stethoscope Headset
Oct 01, 2011

I want to get an aluminum stethoscope headset because I used to use one onsite at the cancer center I worked for and absolutely loved it.  I do have a question though.  What type of plug-in would I need?  I want to plug it into my speaker and I now use the Emdat Inscribe platform.  I don't think a USB connection would work for me since I wouldn't be able to plug it into the speaker, so I would guess I would need the prong type plug-in.  Most of the time wh ...
