Ghost in my machine? Brand New computer - Backwards typist

Posted: Nov 26, 2009

I bought a new Dell back in August and have nothing but problems with it. First I had a ? board error, then for a few days had a keyboard failure. During all this, my font size keeps changing. One day I can barely read it (looks like this) and other days, (it looks like this).

The menu bars now are so small, I can barely read them, yet the font size is so large, the words run off the edge of the screen. I have spent most of my time off work trying to figure it out. I went into display and changed the font size. I also changed it in Word, but it still changes from day to day.

I called Dell support two weeks ago and they "fixed it". It changed again. I called Dell a couple days ago and they want $59.95 to "fix it" because it's "beyond what their basic support team can do."  What a ripoff, especially since this computer is brand new.

It is a Dell Inspiron 546 with an Athlon 2.6GHz processor with 3GB memory and a 350GB HD. Could the processor be the problem? I've always used Pentium but decided to try this since I never heard any complaints about it.

Anyone have any ideas? It's driving me nuts! I'm not paying $59.95 for something that should not be happening. This should be an easy fix and should be something that "basic support" should be able to do. I'm ready to throw this computer out the window.

I had same problem on my Desktop PC and got it resolved by installing Microsoft ClearType font.

labor. It doesn't run out until August next year. Seems like they want to drag their feet until it runs out.

This is not my first Dell computer, either and never, ever had a problem...but I will never buy another one. The support (and company) have gone downhill since I bought my first one way back when.

They sent me a survey about how well I liked the computer, etc. and I let them know about the problems. I then got a phone call apologizing for the problems but I could barely understand the guy and told him I was getting my own techie in here and sending them the bill. Haven't heard a thing until yesterday. They want me to fill out another survey, but I'm not wasting my time.

Did you try advanced settings? - sm.

[ In Reply To ..]
1. Go to your desktop, right click and select Properties.
2. Display Properties window will open. Select Appearance tab.
3. In the Font size drop-down select Large Fonts and click Apply.

Now all of the text on screen will become really big. If you're happy with that font size - great! If not, and most likely you won't be we're going to adjust the font sizes:

4. Click the Advanced button. Advanced Appearance window will appear.
5. In the Advanced Appearance window take a look at the Item drop down. Now, let's scroll through the selections. The item settings you see on this screen govern the appearance of various graphical components in Windows. You should also notice that for some you can change fonts and font sizes and for some you can't. Those items that have font and font size associated with them govern the appearance of various text. These are the items that we're going to change.

Here's a list of the items and their corresponding settings that I use. Feel free to use these or play around on your own, but don't forget that when you change font/font size you might also have to change the actual component size. I would recommend trying the settings I use first and then making necessary adjustments. Anyway, here are my settings:

Format: Item - Size - Font - Font Size

Active Title Bar - 22 - Trebuchet MS - 11
Icon - 32 - Tahoma - 10
Inactive Title Bar - 22 - Trebuchet MS - 11
Menu - 19 - Tahoma - 10
Palette Title - 19 - Tahoma - 9
Selected Items - 19 - Tahoma - 10

Don't forget to click OK on the Advanced Appearance window and then OK again on the Display Properties window when you're done.

Ah-yes! TY!!!That's what Tech Support did but they - Fried

did it so fast, I couldn't write it all down. Thank you, thank you. I was afraid to mess around any further with these settings and I've been having a lot of senior moments lately. :-(

My desktop icons are still tiny even though I enlarged them, but I didn't restart the computer, so maybe they will change.

P.S. Give me DOS any day. LOL

Jul 30, 2012

I'm on the hunt this week for a new computer.  With all the new competitors, I haven't kept up with who is top of the line now or who is outsourcing tech support to where.  Any advice for me?  If you had a choice, who would you go with?  I've been using Dell for years but doesn't mean I need to stay there.  HP, Compaq, Dell, Toshiba, Acer?  ...

Apr 13, 2014

everything updates to the hilt and I am finding my typing screen has a lag to it.  I have tons of ram, etc etc and I wonder if Norton is playing a roll.  It isnt a terrible lag but when you type very fast it will locked for a few seconds.  It isnt like waiting on words to appear it is more a lock type lag if you type too fast.  I find these new computers are most assuredly nothing like the older ones that i have had.  Much more chintzy and of course made in China.  ...

CPAP Machine
Dec 17, 2009

I have a patient with sleep apnea and the doctor states the pateint will need a "break" CPAP at home.  The only other thing it sounds like is a "brick" CPAP.  I don't think it's either, but definitely not brick.  I've done an extensive Google search so danged many times today with all of the crappy docs I've had, and I am so sick of Google, I could just about rip my computer off my desk and smash it against the wall.  Either that, ...

Has anyone used a virtual machine? My PC turned out to have an incompable operating system, so they are sending a virtual machine. Steno Machine And MTing
Oct 16, 2009

I have been using a steno machine to do this job since the year 2000.  I would have a difficult time returning to typing on a QWERTY board for MT'ing...way too slow and painful on the hands, etc.  On a good day on a familiar account, I can produce 250 lines an hour, no sweat.  I was trained in school to reach 225 words per minute, which I did back in 1992, to qualify to take the California state board exam.  I would encourage anyone to take the time and effort to learn s ...

HELP! XP Virtual Machine In Windows 7.
May 09, 2011

My computer crashed. I bought a new computer that has Windows 7. The hospital I work for uses a Cisco VPN client that will not work with Windows 7. I bought the Windows 7 professional upgrade and set up the XP virtual system. Now everything works except my foot pedal (Infinity IN-DVIUSB). It seems this it is not truly a USB device but is a HIB device. I am going crazy without a foot pedal. Has anyone else gone through this? Is there a pedal that works with XP virtual machine? Question: If You Need A Fax Machine Or Printer For A Job...
Oct 14, 2014

Does that suggest you will need daily patient lists faxed to you that are hard to read and you have to stop and glean information from them that you are not being paid to do? Just wondering.  I just assumed all of that from the need of a fax machine.  Anyone else venture a guess?      ...

Brand New World
Jan 11, 2010

Yesterday (Sun) was a nightmare. I was struggling to get jobs all day long (see posts below). There were very few last night even, when there are normally an abundance of jobs. I was bouncing all over the place; it was like the cesspool all over again. Look at the backlog this morning; only 400 jobs company wide at 8 EST? I think whatever upgrade they did yesterday morning just sucked more accounts to our ILPs. ...

Brand-new Downside To VR I Never Even Imagined:

Have any of you noticed, after months or years of doing nearly 100% VR, that when you get a straight transcription job to type, your speed isn't what it used to be, and you've forgotten half of your shortcuts?  Even worse, I was trying to get a typing certificate a couple weeks ago, and it was typing from copy.  The instructions also were unclear, and I couldn't figure out whether I was supposed to correct all the mistakes in the paragraph I was typing from, or not edit ...

Nov 05, 2010

I have been out-of-town, enjoying being away from Medical Transcription for a few weeks, and upon skimming through the posts that I had missed, I noted that there was recently a discussion on the Word Help Board regarding ACE Bandage and if it should be all caps or not.  The debate seemed to center around whether ACE should be used for “ACE inhibitor” and Ace for “Ace wrap” to avoid confusion.  if you are talking about the original ACE™ wrap or ACE™ ...
