Working for Nuance (minimum wage) - & with very poor benefits

25 years ago, I had an hourly wage of $11.50 (before I got into transcription), while the minimum wage was $3.35. So I was making 3x minimum wage.

Fast forward to Nuance today, my salary is $7.25, minimum wage. (BTW, this is my very first minimum wage job of my entire lifetime, back to when I worked as a teenager in the 1970s). Plus, the medical benefits are awful, and 25 years ago they were good, along with entirely paid by employer.

And, Nuance feels the need to employ an army of QA/QC people to find every typo I make ... Wow!

But the GOOD news ... I survived, and have landed a new job. Upward & onward.

My salary trend continued its upward course until a job loss in 2007. I didn't land at Nuance until this year, where I experienced an unbelievable loss of income.
The truth is, my husband and I were able to survive this reversal only because we are debt-free and just stopped spending money on anything non-essential this year. I've always been debt adverse, but Nuance has really driven home how crucial it is.
Now, if I can convince my husband to start exercising, to do everything in our power to avoid medical problems, we might just make it, yet.

I know Nuance is hard to make $ with. However, I did get some useful info that has helped my line count when I use it. They sent an email about scheduling your day in blocks. For instance, I check mail etc in the first 15 minutes. I work regularly for the next 45 minutes. Then I have a power hour where I haul butt for the next hour. Then 15 min break and get up and walk, get a drink, bathroom etc. Then work til lunch. After lunch, the same schedule again. The first time I really stuck to this, my count doubled. Just FYI for those of you suffering OOW situations etc like me.

I don't know about you, but my hourly price for 'butt hauling' starts about $25/hour. For what Nuance offers, no butt will be hauled. Sorry.

LOL! Exactly! But, I have to look at getting all I can get, even if it stinks, until I get somewhere better. I have to focus on the positive to keep me from punching a hole in my monitor. I'd work my fingers bloody for $25/hr :)

Bottom line is, regardless of the new pay rules, it's hard to even make above minimum wage before or after the new rules. So at least federal law guarantees minimum wage. Beyond that, my goal is to get out of this field and leave this MTSO company ASAP, though it won't happen overnight. ...

A $15.00 minimum wage would equate to 375 lines per hour at .04 per line. That's 3000 lines a day for an 8 hour day! The best I have ever done was 2700 lines editing in an 8 hour day and that was only once and someplace where I had been doing the same doctors for 6 years. I have heard in various places on these boards that if you are supposed to work full-time and your pay (by the line or character) doesn't equal minimum wage for those hours, you can get unemployment even though you still have a job. I LOVE working from home. I love my CCM, she is extremely understanding and flexible, which is what I need! I called my parents' lawyer; this post is RIGHT ON! MTSOs have used semantics to rip us off for the past decade. They DO have to pay minimum wage ! We do NOT work "production", as MTSO's claim.
