Welcome to Mmodal Gestapo like timeclock and rigid schedule - sorry Nuance..you are now under BigBrother

Posted: Dec 05, 2012

There is one reason and one reason only for instituting time clocks and not allowing Nuance MTs to manually fill out time cards and that is to micromanage your schedule, pure and simple.  So I am sorry to burst your bubble, but those of you who have taken 10 hours over the course of a day to get your 8 hours in...OR those who actualy work 10 hours to get in as many lines as possible..those days are over.  You will be given a 15 minute leeway over whatever schedule you are given, whether it is straight 8 hours or split shift.  You will be told you need to clock out if you are away from your desk for any length of time..but that does not mean you can come and go as long as you clock out.  They will want constant updates if you change your schedule one iota and then will monitor how often you are not "working your schedule."

I understand there are many Transcenders who really work more than 8 hours in order to produce more..I know of personally one who produces over 3000 lines and works at least 10 hours a day to do that.  Really do not think that is going to fly anymore.

So on behalf of Mmodal and the slaves over there...I am sorry it is happening to you too. The time clock is the single worse thing that has happened to production.

Okay, I'm going to bite and be the devil's advocate here. - sm

People complain about NJA but think it should be okay for their co-workers to work 2 hours or more over their scheduled shifts? How the heck are the TSMs supposed to figure out scheduling if that's the modus operandi? Sorry, I'm not going to cry crocodile tears over the poor ex-Transcenders not being able to throw in a couple extra hours whenever they feel like it anymore.

I really don't find the time clock situation that rigid, any more than any job I've ever been on before that had one, including inhouse. I do wish the lines per hour was based solely off of being actually logged into a report in EditScript, though, but the allowed discrepancy between "system time" and time clock time has been more than generous enough for me all the while I've been here.

And before anyone calls me a suit or an apologist, I have PLENTY of problems with the way Nuance does things. But them not allowing their employees to work some inordinate number of hours off the time clock is not one of them.

Not only reason why - mtmom

[ In Reply To ..]
Well I am from Transcend and I do radiology and we have a newer dictator who dictates long reports and when he does it is difficult to get what we are told under our current production rules in that 8 hours. I am told I have to do that many a day and if there is a situation of backlog I should make up my production. Well we know what that means is if I had a bad day of dictations and needed to get up out of my chair for any kind of reason I can make up my production but do not go into OT so some of us have to work over 8 hours in cases like that so so we do not lose our jobs and not to just boost our counts. Just speaking for myself here but some of us and not only me are in this boat.

Do you know yet what the production rules are for Radiology - at Nuance?

[ In Reply To ..]
Is it going to be number of reports or just lines per hour like everyone else? If your production standards change to the same as everyone at Nuance, then you shouldn't have to worry about squeezing in time off the clock in order to meet minimums, right? You certainly don't have to worry about $900 minimum per pay period in order to qualify for health insurance (such as it is) anymore.
not sure yet - mtmom
[ In Reply To ..]
I have not heard yet. This account pays per report so I am not sure. Days where this happens with longer dictations if you take your two breaks (and I have two emails sent to all of us at different points this year telling us to take those two 15 minute breaks in an 8 hour shift) you cannot meet production. I guess we will have to clock out for those breaks and work over on those days to get 8 hours of actual work. Things are going to change that is for sure because sometimes we get backlog calls say on a Friday night or Saturday but no OT approved so most of us will not be able to help out in those cases because as per clocking in and out we will already have our 40. It will change things for us and for our team leads on these situations.

Agree completely, timeclock and schedules are necessary - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
In fact by making people keep a schedule (like a job in the real world), it makes it much easier to staff and, if done correctly (which admittedly on a lot of accounts it is not), would help to avoid over-staffing.

I don't have a problem with the schedule or timeclock. My only real problem with Nuance is the QA (and low pay but that is industry wide).

This is a production job, paid by piecemeal, if they want a timeclock - then we should be paid a FAIR hourly wage

[ In Reply To ..]
It is patently unfair to pay by the piece which is what MTSOs do and then demand you got all your piece work done within a set time frame. UNFAIR. IF they want a time clock to keep schedules for workflow FINE, then we should be paid salary. Still given minimums we have to keep...but paid salary. Just like other professions that are paid hourly..some people get more work done than others.

timeclock - Coco

[ In Reply To ..]
This is the first company where I have had a timeclock to punch into (2 actually). I hated it at first, but I get the work out of the way in 8 hours instead of spreading it out all day which I have gotten used to.

That being said if we get s_______d again on this new compensation plan I will be looking immediately for a new job.

So you're decrying the loss of what Transcend is being sued for. - Stockholm syndrome

[ In Reply To ..]
Some may have benefited from that policy, such as being able to get in 3000 lines per day with one job rather than taking another part-time one in order to do that, but it appears that many more or most did not:

I asked my TSM about this and she said nothing - really changing. Only can have

[ In Reply To ..]
8 punched hours daily is all. The system will not lock you out if you're not punched in and you'll still be able to work.

nothing really changing - mt20years

[ In Reply To ..]
I have to let you know that if you were acquired by Nuance, things will be changing. Not trying to be a downer, but things will change and you will not like it. Get ready.

Sorry but your TSM is - not correct about this

[ In Reply To ..]
Your time clock (hours punched in) has to match your system hours (hours spent typing in a report). I was told I couldn't have more than a 45-minute discrepancy over the 2-week pay period (I worked 30 hours per week). They will know if you are typing when you are not punched in and you will hear about it. You cannot work overtime without prior approval, and that is a rare occurence at Nuance these days. You will only be able to work 40 hours a week. The days of 10 hour days to get production up are gone. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is what it is. If you were an IC that could fly, but as an employee Nuance has to go by labor regulations and that includes having an accurate time card. You would want to be paid the overtime rate for hours worked over 40 anyway, right? They do pay time and a half for OT (if it is approved on your accounts).

Nuance time and a half - daisy

[ In Reply To ..]
Just a question about the Nuance time and a half you mentioned. What is the base amount of the time and a half? I know that at Transcend they had some convoluted formula for paying overtime, which resulted in an amount nowhere near true "time and a half". For example, with true time and a half, say you make an hourly wage of $12 per hour. Your overtime rate would be 1-1/2 times that, or $18 per hour. The Transcend way was not to use the $12 nonproduction pay amount as a base, but as I said they had some weird formula that resulted in way, way less than that for an hour of overtime. So my question is, at Nuance, is there a dollar figure they base OT on, or do they have the goofy formula which ends up cheating us big-time?
Goofy formula, not based on nonproductive hourly rate. NM - anon

daisy - Thanks

for the reply. I've always wondered how they get away with it, and why people are excited to get any overtime of this sort when it really does not amount to anything.

Absolutely cannot work off the clock - XMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I can attest to you that working off the clock is NOT prohibited. They do correlate system hours to time clock hours every pay period. I have been threatened on this one myself, as I also came from a company where working a bit extra to make your like count really wasn't a big deal. Falsifying one's timecard is a crime, they told me. There is no way to get away with working off the clock. They see everything.
Working off the time clock is a big no-no. Not only will you be - disrupting others workflow, you will be in essence
[ In Reply To ..]
Cheating and lying about your hours worked. There would be no need for a time clock or set schedules if everyone decided to just work extra to meet their production.

You have to be punched in when you are working or else you will be reprimanded, written up or maybe even fired. Unless you are an independent contractor who does not have to punch the time clock, you have to be punched in when working.
so you mean it IS prohibited - but we get your drift nm

what I was told and have followed - new but old

[ In Reply To ..]
I was told that at the end of my 2 weeks I basically had to have at least 70 hours showing up and was allowed an hour a day away from the keyboard if I needed it. I am not chained to my keyboard. I punch in on time and do my best to punch out on time, but if I find I need a longer break than usual I may take 30 minutes or so and make it up at the end of the day. (or even go back on later that night if I want) I have never once been reprimanded or spoken too. The one hour per day is also allocated for looking things up, research etc. I just don't need this very often thankfully as I am on a pretty decent account and have also done this for umpteen years!!! They do know if you are typing and are not punched in as all your reports are timed in and out so don't type if you are not on clock because that will GET you into trouble. I have no problem making my line counts and then some - There are days where I have very bad dictators but am always able to make the minimum between VR and straight typing

Since your TSM is your boss I would get it in an - email or writing and then just do it.

[ In Reply To ..]
If something comes up later you'll have that email from your boss to 'splain your confusion. The way communication is going these days at Transcend, it could be a year or more before they even notice and old habits die hard if you think about it. They'll want that work done no matter what.

Thanks to lawsuits do they really have a choice. They - may pay slave wages but they

[ In Reply To ..]
are now at least following the law. You hire on with the agreement of x amount of lines per hour requirement so you are agreeing to their terms. Not defending them but you have to look at it from both sides I guess. Everyone screams sue, sue and this is the result. It certainly does not benefit the MLS in any way, shape or form. Everyone has the option to turn down the job and slave wage. If you sign on, you are agreeing to it like or not.

Nuance Timeclock Question
Dec 05, 2012

I'm a Transcender new to Nuance.  Regarding the timeclock that we supposedly are gonna have to start using 12/22, can anyone tell me if it is possible to have multiple punches in a single day?  The reason I ask is I cannot sit in a chair for much more than 2 hours at a time and I need to be able to get up multiple times while working.  Is this allowed by Nuance or will I get canned once they find I cannot sit there for 8 hours straight?  I am a good worker and can get my ...
