Testing with Nuance - SamMT

I've applied with Nuance & would like some info about their testing procedure. Is actual transcription required (as opposed to only multiple choice, etc.)? If so, what kind of foot pedal is needed? What is the level of difficulty, is it easy or hard to understand, ESL, etc?

(I have visited another forum in the past ... several MTs who had applied to both M-Modal and Nuance stated that one of the 2 was fairly easy for an experienced MT to pass; however, the other was hard and that they had failed it. However, I don't remember which one most of said they had passed easily, yet failed the other). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I have taken both. I didn't think Nuance was too bad but they did require testing which I don't recall it being that bad. I work for them and recently also started a second job with TTS and they did not require me to do any testing at all just a written test

during the summer. You're right, just a 50-question multiple choice test that almost any MT could pass .. no time limit & answers could easily be looked up. I wasn't able to accept the job at the time due to PC issues, but what I had a problem with was the accompanying "computer audit" they wanted us to download.

HUH? I looked at the company they used for this "Computer Audit" on our own, personal computers vs. THEIR property, what they do, etc., and I had pretty profound reservations about them literally taking a snapshot of my computer, my files, personal/financial info, etc. I'm not saying this is what they would be doing .. but made me think.

Is not the end of the world. They don't "look" at your files, personal/financial info, etc. It is a scan to see how much space is left on your hard drive, how much RAM you have, etc., and it generates a report. It does not save actual files per se. This is important to see if you have enough computing power to run several of their platforms at the same time. I have the report from my scan, and it is really a benign thing, so not to worry. This is not the first company that has run this sort of test on my PC. Companies really need to know if you can support their platforms before they hire you and not waste your time and theirs. I had a scan a few months back because they wanted to add another platform, and I was short on RAM. They gave me a couple of days to obtain another memory card which I got used from my local computer guy, and he installed it in about 5 minutes. All in all, it cost me $65 which is better than being without a job.

What do you think about objective test for Nuance? I thought that part was fairly easy, but not the transcription part. I can do great on actual transcribing in job setting, but for some reason I always do poorly on testing for jobs. Am I the only one who has trouble or are there are other people like me here. I am taking the Nuance test and can't make the audio any louder. I have followed the directions within the test to save work, press Take a Break key, enter the test again, and also turned computer off, etc. blah blah; Bottom line - audio starts out loudly but degenerates in volume and clarity. Did anyone else have this problem and how did you fix it? Thanks for any help you can provide. I will fail this if I can't hear it. ...

Help!!!! I am not able to complete the testing on Nuance mt.test site because my computer will not allow this program -- Javascript. Has anyone else had this problem? I am just wondering how you get around this. On the yellow Active X add-on site, it will not allow this. I am at my wit's end as to what to do. I have not tried going on Technical Support. I have taken so many tests lately with probably dozens of companies. I am wondering how you feel about Nuance tests and if it is harder or easier than the other companies. I personally thought Softscript test was kind of hard, compared with Nuance. Some of the transcription audio files were a little hard with mumbling and fast talking dictators, but really not bad when compared to others. According to a poster below which has apparently already attended one of the payroll meetings (as the poster posted) for nuance they have decided to keep the incentive part of all of our pay going with an exception that now you have to have over the industry standard of 98% to get a production based incentive. In addition (if this poster is accurate) they have again cut the overall pay from 8 and 4 to 3 3/4 AND 7 1/2. This is nothing but a bunch of crapploa...an MT who is now getting ...

It is truly laughable that MQ expects US MTs to jump through hoops, passing their tests, audits, trying to decipher absolute garbage and paying us like we were 6 month trainees, etc., and then have the audacity to send work to India. How are you supposed to know whether to put the headings and text on the same line or put the text on the line under the heading, put a colon after heading or not put a colon? They said they go by BOS, but all I see pertaining to that in the BOS is the sample reports where they put the text under the heading with no colons after the heading. This surgeon dictates the same over and over in multiple reports, and I cannot understand what type of testing this is. "s/l Manuar test reveals 5/5 strength in forward elevation, external rotation, internal rotation, and abduction." "s/l The remainder of Manuar assessment exam of left upper extremity reveals 5/5 strength throughout all major muscle groups." It is getting very hard to even find the energy to test anymore. I have tested till I am blue in the face and dont understand why it is so hard to get a job in this profession. I graduated top of my class with a 3.98 and you would think I would have had a job by now. I tested for a company who stated that my skills were not up to their requirements, which I find very difficult to believe, as I have been in this business for 10 years, nonetheless, I am beginning to wonder if some of these companies are not scamming us. I was required to transcribe four different files with the shortest one being 6 minutes and the longest 12 minutes, but apparently, they were not good enough. Just found out my employer is requiring all employees to take the HITECH test. This is from the law that was passed last year. We were told it would take about 5 hours to complete.
