Just curious about how many MLSs have been running out of work lately?? - It has been frustrating and

Posted: Feb 20, 2014

now I'm not sure of what to do with a new part-time job I'm supposed to start next week. I'm not going to be able to stay at my desk waiting for work for 12+ hours per day. If I don't get 40 hours, I'll lose my current benefits, but I have a friend who works 20 hours and that person runs out, too. Any advice? TY.

It has been this way virtually since Christmas - not good

Hard to know whether it could be the weather in places, it could be the new year and people getting their insurance sorted, it could be they have converted over to that front end VR/SR(i.e. point and click and doctors do their own editing) and they just have not told us. Hard to say.

It certainly seems like when there is dictation, it is mostly pretty bad. So you do wonder where the good dictators are and if something like EPIC has been implemented on the sly, leaving us with the dregs.

You can ask for extra accounts, but I find it very hard to make a decent line count with new accounts, specs, you know FIESA is waiting to strike so the line count goes way down as you try to find all the booby traps in the new specs.

I am hopeful this is just a dry spell. I always tell myself I will keep a diary of volumes of work every year so I won't freak out when it goes low if I know it always goes low at that time, but here it is another year and I have not done it again.

Best of luck with your part time job and I hope there is enough work for you next week.

I have two accounts I work on, one is a great account, mostly good dictators, just some weird rules to comply to. The other, my secondary is just awful. There are loads of horrible dictators and the VR just butchers their work. Guess which one keeps running out of work this week and which one there is always plenty of?

I actually had the most work during the holidays, less now--sm - anon as well

I worked Thanksgiving and Christmas and never ran out liked I had hoped. However, before the holidays and afterwards until now, I am repeatedly running out of work. To me, that suggests the accounts are overstaffed. The accounts I work on have not been affected by weather and this would not normally be a slow time. I was even running out of work at a time when the hospital beds were all full (this mentioned by the docs in the dictation).

On the benefits, if it is the health insurance, you can still get that at 30 hours if you want to decrease the amount of time you work. You will get less PTO but you actually still get some (one of the few nice things with Nuance).

40 hours / lose benefits? - anon

I just wanted to address your comment of "If I don't get 40 hours, I'll lose my current benefit..."

If you're speaking of Nuance and our health insurance and such, if you don't get 40 hours because you are OOW, then that is not your fault and does NOT affect your benefits. If you request a schedule change that no longer is 40 hours, that affects you. And the number of hours we work is tied to our PTO (which in the case of OOW situations is BS in my opinion), but your insurance and such is based on your "schedule."

Also, don't wait around for work. Other than needing the money, you are not required to wait around or even flex. If there's no work, that's on them, not you! Don't let them tell you otherwise.

Honestly, this whole bit of having us flex just plays even more into why we are constantly out of work. Or how the secondaries come in and work on our accounts when work is low or nonexistent. We should only be working on secondaries (and third and fourth accounts) when work in those accounts is high and our primary is low, but they don't seem to get that!

Never run out of work - sm

Ask for a different region. I never run out of work. It might be because I work 2-3 shift.

OK people. Wake up. I know you don't want to read this but I am going to tell you straight up what's going on. EPIC. Those 4 little letters have caused more loss of jobs in the field of medical transcription over the past year than probably since the profession began. By this time a year from now there will just be very very very few reports that must be processed by means of transcription/editing. This is the whole purpose of EPIC. Several accounts Nuance has, has gone over to EPIC in the past month. They always do it on the sly. They never tell us. Why would they want to do that and cause a panic. If you received an email from your superior telling you the accounts you have been working so hard on for so long have made the Go-Live switch to EPIC and your accounts will have very few reports for you, would you not panic and find another job? It's not something that is going to go away. It's only going to become worse with each passing week. There are always some doctors who are stragglers and say they're not going to use the EPIC system, but then they call in the real mind pros and convince the docs that this is actually the way to go and all his/her friends are doing it. They will be offering more and more incentives for the doctors to make the switch...(i.e. trips, money, you name it)! You will first start to notice most of the good English speakers have gone. Then you will notice certain work types have magically disappeared. You will get emails from your supervisor (if you're lucky) telling you to "just hang in there....it's a slow time of the year right now and things are going to pick up"....or Nuance's FAVORITE "We have plenty of work to divide among all of you. OR We have a lot of new accounts coming on very soon, so just be patient." It's always the same thing. They might have new accounts coming on board soon but it's only because they are getting their medical records in a position to implement EPIC. They can't start the new system with all those backlogs of dictations the doctors are about to lose their admitting privileges over for not dictating. We will see a large amount of old dictations when a new account starts up. Once the facility gets their records current that's when you will see the work start to dwindle. I know it sounds like I am saying you've got plenty of time to leech out every penny in transcription that you can, but you really don't. You don't know how hard it is to find a job these days. Also, we are needed very much right now because these transcription companies have contracts with these hospitals to provide them with their reports on a timely basis. However, the hospitals do not have anything written in THEIR end of the contract that tells Nuance a number as to the amount of reports they will provide for the company. They (the hospitals) can send them 10 reports a month and be living up to their end of the contract. So if the MTs quit where would Nuance be? They would be stuck with ALL India personnel who don't mind sitting at a 50 foot long desk made of plywood with 20 other people for 12-16 hours a day making 2 cents per line and GRATEFUL for that high wage. That's a penthouse job for them. Well, I say let them have it. I'm tired of transcribing all these mealy mouth doctors who can't construct a sentence in English much less speak the language and when they DO speak English halfway well, they still sound like they have a washcloth in their mouth and since dictating is such a thorn in their sides they spill it out so fast there is no 100% perfect report. It's not possible. Even the QA people would HAVE to be guessing. EPIC is the way of the future...the IMMEDIATE future folks. All you have to do is do a Google search and the hospitals are on there really praising what a wonderful system it truly is, both for providers as well as the patients. Do a Google search on the facility you are transcribing on that has little work. I guarantee you that you will find some article about that facility implementing the EPIC system recently. Good luck. We all need it.
