Anybody manipulated into full time? - MT

Posted: Jun 07, 2015

When I was hired a few months ago, I said I was really only interested in part time...probably 20 hours/wk.  The recruiter said yeah, that was fine.  I got my offer letter with the schedule and knew with one look it was more than 20 hours, but I didn't think about it that much.  I did ask the recruiter, and he said that we had discussed that but he didn't have any 20 hour schedule availabe, so we agreed on a 30-hour schedule.  I don't recall this, but I said all right.  Then I sat down and actually looked at the schedule.  It was 40 hours.  So I talked to him again.  He gave me the same BS.  We talked about other schedules but he didn't have anything part time to give me.  MAYBE I did forget something about the initial conversation and agreeing to a 30-hour schedule, but I KNOW I did not initially agree to a 40-hour schedule.  But I sucked it up and agreed to it then.  Well, I'm finding it extremely difficult to work this schedule.  I know a lot of people end up OOW, but I usually do okay on my main account.  Usually, most is one shift where I'll run out of work, and it might be only a couple hours I'll lose.  Not nearly enough for me to get something resembling the schedule I initially wanted.

I don't know if it's the company or the job itself or working from home (first time), but I'm finding this job extremely soul sucking.

You can go down to 30 hours or even 20 hours - if you request a change

Ask your TSM. Be firm and have a schedule listed on your email (presumably just a shortened version of your current one).

Personally, 30 hours is better for me because you get the life insurance and LTDI (not that they would ever pay it out, but at least Nuance are paying for it, and the life insurance is $50,000 which they also pay for).

Oh yeah, it's soul sucking, but the job and working from home is good by me. Before my company got eaten by Nuance it was a very good atmosphere, they appreciated the MTs, I got all the work I wanted and then some, and great pay.

It's the management of Nuance whereby they do not anticipate the staffing needs and do not seem to care when there is overstaffing and we can't get our hours in, also the terrible pay.

Oh yeah, and the biggest soul sucker of them all is FIESA. It is nothing more than a tool for Nuance to cut our pay via nitpicking QA and it is awful.

about changing my schedule.

I came from a clerical position in the MT department of a local office, so I worked outside of the home. And I did some typing, some QA, and a lot of other stuff, so it really broke up the monotony of the work day. I also wasn't told that this was going to be almost solely editing and no transcription. I'm finding it insanely difficult to focus for eight hours listening to these numb nuts doctors mumble their way through this crap. Even typing would at least keep me more engaged.

It's only the beginning - anony

Nuance consistently does this. They lure people in by promising certain things (bonuses, particular schedules, only one account, mostly typing, etc.), then never delivery said promises. They lie, manipulate, and NEVER have the best interests of their employees in mind. I agree to just be firm with your TSM about what you want in terms of your schedule. This sort of thing is just the beginning of what is to come unfortunately. But I do sincerely hope it works out for you, at least with getting a schedule you are happy with. Good luck!

I'm sorry to say that most work is editing--sm - anon

Editing is a much different skill set than transcription. I never applied for a QA job in the good ole days because I knew I would hate editing and unfortunately, that is what is left now. Hopefully your supervisor can help you get a schedule more to your liking but it also shows the necessity of always, always reading anything very carefully before signing.

Soul sucking. That's a good way to - put it. - nm

I feel like recruiters don't care, they're probably paid on commission and just need a warm body to sign up, do you think? bait and switch. Or perhaps this recruiter screwed up and is lying to cover his or her behind. Don't put up with a schedule you didn't agree to! There's a huge difference between 20 and 40 hours, or even between 30 and 40. I like what I do, but find editing to be much more mentally exhausting than straight typing, because you can't let up for a minute or an important error will sneak past you. That's why I'm part time, less stress. You are absolutely right - this job is not good for one's soul. I thought I would like working from home, but it's like living in a cave with nobody to talk to, I hate that. I'm looking for other work where I can feel like I still live on Planet Earth!

Rule #1: It has been my experience most recruiters lie, not all, but most.

Rule #2: They promise you the moon. See rule #1.

Rule #3: Recruiters only make money if they find what the company is looking for. See rules 1 and 2. Once you're hired, they have their money and they are finished.

Rule #4: When dealing with a recruiter refer to rules 1 through 3.

Trying To Find Part-time Or Full-time Employee Position (hospital/clinic)
Apr 30, 2013

If anyone knows of a hospital, clinic, or large practice offering remote full-time or part-time employee positions, I would really appreciate an email.  I have the sudden need to help support a family member long term (in addition to myself) and really need to find a long-term remote employee position for the stability.  Yes, I watch all the various employment sites and even individual hospital sites, but I was hoping that maybe, just maybe someone who works for a hospital that does th ...

MQ Rehire Policy For Part Time To Full Time
Apr 09, 2011

I worked for MQ full time and then went to part time last year, before finally quitting altogether because of health problems. I seem to remember an obscure policy that if you were full time and then went to part time, you could not go back to full time for a period of at least 1 year.  Can anyone verify that for me? IF, and this is a big IF, I were to go back to work for MQ, I would need to be full time. ...

Optiscript Part Time To Full Time
Nov 19, 2011

Does anyone care to share that if you are hired at optiscript part time will they let you change to full time easily? I know they are a small company and do not over hire so I do not know how easily this could be done.  I am thinking of cutting down to part time at my current employee so I can work part time elsewhere and eventually just leave my current employee once I see how the land lays elsewhere.  Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated :) ...

Change From Full- Time To Part- Time.
Sep 10, 2012

I am still debating whether to enroll at Andrews or M-TEC.  My husband is retiring in 2 years and I want to be able to work part-time after that.  Is it realistic to think that I can complete the course at Andrews or M-TEC in 12 months at the most, work full time for a year and then part-time after that.  I would want to be able to work from home.  I guess the other question is "How long after graduating could I expect to earn enough to make it worth the investment, in a reas ...

The Contradiction Of Full-time IC.
Jan 19, 2010

It seems to me that full-time IC is a contradiction.  I mean, in order to really be an IC, per IRS, don't they indicate that you should have more than one client?  So, if one client requires full-time, that means you have to work more than full-time in order to keep everyone happy?  Yeah, I know, there's no way to fight it, because there will always be hungry MTs anxious to fill the full-time IC positions.  In a perfect world, in my opinion, no MT would be required ...
