Full time MLS and full time mom - Jnick2012
Posted: Mar 14, 2012
Was wondering if it is realistic for me to expect to maintain full time MLS status and be a full time mom to a 3 month old? Anyone have experience with this? Thanks :)

However, I had a babysitter and worked out of home. It was very hard and had many sleepless nights, going to work just exhausted. I would not recommend this though as too hard to work when you have not had any sleep. You working at home, it may be different, as you can take naps whenever you want. By the way, are you with a significant other -- husband/boyfriend. This would make a world of difference, as you are not needing this second income as much (of course I don't know your circumstances). I had a very hard time working when my daughter was a baby. It is all up to what you can do and how things are in your home. GOOD LUCK.
I'm dealing with this now too...and man is it hard! - Hayseed

I work third shift, used to pull MINIMUM of 7500 lines/week, and now I'm lucky if I can do 6000. The only time I can crank the lines is if kiddo is sleeping and that seems to last 2-3 hours maximum. I myself am getting about the same hours of sleep in and it blows major chunks. I don't have any support system except for my husband, who is disabled with a bum ticker, and he tries to stay up during my shift and do what he can but it is hard on both of us because we are WAY too old and moldy(I'm 40 and he's almost 50).
:-)
A friend who doesn't work at all keeps telling me "grab sleep when you can." Sure, easier said than done I'm afraid. All I can say is hang in there. You are definitely NOT alone.
I am VERY fortunate to have an employer that is "family friendly" and they know what I'm going through and are supportive in that they are at least not pushing me hard as far as keeping up the high line counts, so that's been a blessing.
Third shift is hard, but I cannot imagine trying to work day shift, as that is when the kid is most active (along with the rest of the world) and it's much easier to grab a bit of sleep late at night right before my shift starts.
I cannot do those 20-30 minute "power naps" other people do though...I feel dizzy and nauseous after those and I'd just rather stay awake.
I can't do caffeine anymore either (breastfeeding) so that's been a bummer. Lots of water helps though, along with this AWESOME liquid supplement my midwife gave me samples of that I now buy on-line called "Floradix Iron and Herbs." It's packed with iron and B vitamins and it REALLY works with the energy level. I ran out a few weeks ago and I really noticed the fatigue hitting hard. I got a new bottle of it and just yesterday I walked 2 miles with kiddo attached to my chest like it was nothing! Awesome stuff and well worth it.
Again, hang in there and congratulations on kiddo! It's definitely NOT easy wearing all these hats!
Thank you SO much for the supplement recommendation! (sm) - MTaGoGo

I don't have a little one, but I'm struggling awfully with fatigue and constant exhaustion. I'm barely coping with basic life as it is, and I'm about to go back to school on top of working full-time and have been feeling overwhelmed about how I'm going to manage with something else on my shoulders now too.
I see that this Floradix has very high ratings on Amazon.com! I will give it a try.
You are most welcome! :-) - Hayseed

I also buy it from Amazon, as the local health food store here wants nearly $50 for a bottle!! Yeowzers!
It can be hard to choke down--has a wicked after taste with the iron. I usually chase it with a chocolate calcium chew or a slurp of coffee. Definitely keep it in the fridge, the colder the better. It's not super nasty, like say cod liver oil, but it's an unsweetened fruit juice. I can tolerate it with no problem but my husband tried it and it made him gag (but, let's face it, dudes are kind of wimpy anyway--unless it comes to nasty alcohol for some bizarre reason).
If you try it, drop a line here to let me know if you notice any difference. I can't rave about it enough, and I'm a wicked tough sell on ANYTHING, especially "earthy crunchy" crap.

Baby and work - INMT

I started this work because I was going to have a third child and wanted to stay home, so when she was born I was ready to work. One this you have to do early on is make sure the baby does not get "spoiled" by needing to be held all the time. That is 100% the most important thing. Having someone help may actually be of no benefit if their idea is sitting "holding" little Suzie all day so you can work, because guess what, they are gone and she expects that attention. I am not saying not to hold her, but if she is happy and content lay her out next to you on a mat, give her toys to stimulate her and talk with her often. As the baby gets older have a desk for her as close to you as possible and set up her "work station" too. Plenty of crayons, a toy computer, an old keyboard, even a toy computer, and talk often. During the beginning I had the baby and a 10 yo and 13 yo at home and it was summer, I was constantly reminding them they could play with her but if she was not fussy, please don't just pick her up for the sake of doing so. Once they are off to school I would be on my own and not sure how to strap a kid to my back and work. Just some thoughts. Good luck
Desk! INMT I forgot about that... - AnonToo

When my oldest and my middle child were younger (the youngest didn't have any interest) I had little desks and toy computers for them too!
I also have to say ITA with your post. My cousin is also an MT with now 7 kids, she is always working around the clock because well first of all she has 7 kids, but also because she IMO coddles them and her husband. It REALLY helps to have boundaries especially when you work from home.
I had to work 4-midnight to make it work. - mthead

My DH changed his hours from 8-5 to 7-3 and took over EVERYTHING when he got home. I didn't even have to make dinner.

You *can* do it or *could* I should say. When I started out I worked in house and had 1 child, but my other 2 children have always had "mommy working at home." Sometimes I put them in Parents' Day Out at the church to give me some time and them some away from home time, sometimes I worked with them. BUT the difference was except for working in house and until the last few years, I never had to work a "schedule" per se. I just had to get my minutes in. So it depends on the flexibility and your help at home. For the first 5 years of my oldest's life I was a single mom with no help (his father never met him and split long before our divorce was final), so it was a tough thing at times..but kids are adaptable (at least mine).

I've got a 9-year-old, 6-year-old and 3.5-year-old, and I've been working since just before I got pregnant with no. 3 (all boys:) It's soooo hard getting my minutes in, but my employer is so easygoing about my sporadic computer time. My 3YO is now used to playing by himself nearby, and he talks to me quite often, so I don't feel like I'm short-changing him, but I do manage to get my time in. It takes getting up at 6 and usually working on-and-off until 10 pm, and doing some on weekend mornings before everyone's up and running, but all I keep thinking is that soon enough I'll be doing this all alone, with no kids interrupting me, and I'll miss it so much!
I'm lucky I love doing transcription (closet doctor :) and I've got a good employer, and I thank my stars I don't have to leave my children with someone else and schlep off to work (it's hard enough sometimes to schlep to the computer -LOL)
If anyone knows of a hospital, clinic, or large practice offering remote full-time or part-time employee positions, I would really appreciate an email. I have the sudden need to help support a family member long term (in addition to myself) and really need to find a long-term remote employee position for the stability. Yes, I watch all the various employment sites and even individual hospital sites, but I was hoping that maybe, just maybe someone who works for a hospital that does th ...
Has anyone working for an MTSO been downgraded from full-time status to part-time status based on not enough hours worked to be considered full time, yet making well above the minimum amount of earnings required for full-time status?

I worked for MQ full time and then went to part time last year, before finally quitting altogether because of health problems. I seem to remember an obscure policy that if you were full time and then went to part time, you could not go back to full time for a period of at least 1 year. Can anyone verify that for me? IF, and this is a big IF, I were to go back to work for MQ, I would need to be full time. ...
Does anyone care to share that if you are hired at optiscript part time will they let you change to full time easily? I know they are a small company and do not over hire so I do not know how easily this could be done. I am thinking of cutting down to part time at my current employee so I can work part time elsewhere and eventually just leave my current employee once I see how the land lays elsewhere. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated :) ...
Since part-time is generally considered 20-25 hrs. per week, does that mean that full-time is anything over 25 hrs. per week or does it have to be a flat 40 hrs? ...
I am strongly considering going to part-time, just hoping to get opinions from anyone who has gone from full-time to part-time or opinions from anyone who has just always been part-time. Thanks! ...
Would anyone be willing to post info on this? I am considering switching to part-time. Wondering how amenable the company is to such requests. If you have done this, were you able to keep same schedule or were you forced into a different schedule? Thanks for any thoughts!

Has anyone been allowed to go from full-time to part-time employment with Nuance? Were you able to keep the same basic schedule? I won't be ready to do this until early next year, so not asking HR at this point.
Thanks for any responses! ...
I see the post about going from full to part time, but what about the opposite? For example, if I get hired at 30 hours per week and I have extra time available for a few weeks, can I consistently work more hours than those scheduled 30 hours? Thanks for any insight you can give. ...
I am still debating whether to enroll at Andrews or M-TEC. My husband is retiring in 2 years and I want to be able to work part-time after that. Is it realistic to think that I can complete the course at Andrews or M-TEC in 12 months at the most, work full time for a year and then part-time after that. I would want to be able to work from home. I guess the other question is "How long after graduating could I expect to earn enough to make it worth the investment, in a reas ...
I hired on at full time but want to drop 2 hours off a day. Do they make you change shift or accounts in that case? I don't want benefits so don't care about that.
I worked at Nuance and any change in schedule ultimately ended up in an account and/or shift change.

from full time to part time w MM? I am so burned out trying to work full time hours, I honestly think I would get the same pittance of a check working part time. Thanks. ...
For those who went full time to part-time with MQ (because you got another job)...how did that work? Did they approve the schedule you wanted, or did they make you take a schedule? My CCM told me in my area there is no more flexible part-time available but could do regular 24 hour part-time...she said she would have to approve my schedule if and when I do this. I may be doing two part-time jobs to start and I am trying to figure out how to do my scheduling around both jobs.

I am curious about a full-time position at a company called TTS. For those full-time, is the work steady. How many lines/week do you average there? Is there overtime available?

If you work full-time for one company, doesn't that put you in the category of employee? It seems to me that a company that advertises for full-time ICs is actually inviting investigation by the IRS and Labor Board. ...
with benefits to part-time with no benefits? How does that change things for you? I've never run out of work before. Do they give less work to the part-timers? Should I anticipate any changes at all? ...
I've never been able to do MT full time because I don't have the concentration, patience, or...whatever it takes to do an 8-hour shift where I'm constantly typing every day. It's very hard on my body. I couldn't do it even in a split shift. Anyone else like this? ...
It seems to me that full-time IC is a contradiction. I mean, in order to really be an IC, per IRS, don't they indicate that you should have more than one client? So, if one client requires full-time, that means you have to work more than full-time in order to keep everyone happy?
Yeah, I know, there's no way to fight it, because there will always be hungry MTs anxious to fill the full-time IC positions. In a perfect world, in my opinion, no MT would be required ...
Can anyone tell me what is considered full-time at Transform? Is it 40 hours or do they go by line count? Do they offer any flexibility in scheduling such as 12-hour window or split shifts?

I was interested in finding out whether anyone else does work two full-time jobs. I am considering doing this because of how slow my other accounts get sometimes (I know they are overstaffed). Just wondered how possible it is to do this, both in terms of time and wear and tear on you physicallly transcribing this much. Anyone who does this that can give me some input or advice?? TIA ...
