I've never been able to do MT full time - me

Posted: Jan 26, 2015

I've never been able to do MT full time because I don't have the concentration, patience, or...whatever it takes to do an 8-hour shift where I'm constantly typing every day. It's very hard on my body. I couldn't do it even in a split shift. Anyone else like this?

I had to cut down to a few hours a week and get - a different full time career

[ In Reply To ..]
I was at the same point as you are, about 5 years ago. What I had once enjoyed and excelled at, I started feeling caged in, bored, stagnant. Now I work full time in a non-MT career and only transcribe a few hours a week for a small company. It's the old cliche "the best of both worlds." I no longer have the back pain and eye strain I used to have. Have you thought about going into a different field of career?

Yes, I'm in school now sm - me

[ In Reply To ..]
School is going to take me another year, so I'll only be doing MT for another year. I wish I could do it full time until then, but it's just too hard on the body.

Good thinkin'! - sm

It's irritating when people who have never transcribed before say things like "Oh, you used to work at home as a typist? I could do that." To which I respond in some version of the following: "A transcriptionist has a lot more skills than a typist. We have a huge knowledge base of medical terminology that most typists don't have. And working at home is still work! We don't sit around polishing our nails."
The only thing that saves me - is

at least an hour of vigorous exercise and hopefully a short nap to keep from falling asleep before I start work every day, otherwise I couldn't stand it. Only 3 more years left in this lousy job before retirement.

We are clones - Hapless

[ In Reply To ..]
I work at such an intense level, I almost have to break every 2 hours. The job is so draining because we do pure work. It is hard to explain this to people who have jobs with water coolers.

I'd rather be up doing a physical job sm - me

[ In Reply To ..]
For 8 hours than sitting in a chair doing transcription. Like you said, people can't know how tedious transcription is unless they do it themselves for 8 hours a day.

Chair duty . . . sm - Kindred

[ In Reply To ..]
I've said it many times that sitting in the chair without hopping up is the hardest part of the job on most days.

It always makes me wonder how truck drivers sit behind the wheel so many hours.

Sometimes, I try to psyche myself up by visualizing that I have to drive to Tampa or what not - I have to sit "behind the wheel" and get there without too many stops!

I wish I had that choice. - mt

[ In Reply To ..]
I can't do it. My body is crying out. I'm getting depressed, exhausted all the time. My fingers are going numb and my eyes are having troubles. Then today got the confirmation I now have diabetes. I cannot do this anymore, but I have no choice I have to pull 8 hours and more because many times there are no jobs during my shift. If I don't work I don't get paid. I cannot afford to be without my job. Once DH can find a job then hoping I can cut back to part time. I feel like I'm not able to take care of myself like I used to. Just feel like I'm cycling through hell.

I hear ya! - Depleted

[ In Reply To ..]
I know exactly what your talking about. I just had an epidural injection yesterday in my back because it kills me to sit and type. Not any better today. I will give it time. But, I have no choice because I have to take care of my kids because their deadbeat so called father thinks he isn't obligated to support his children. Exercise and taking a nap if you can, but its hard when time is money.

I'm sorry sm - me

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm sorry for your health problems, and I sympathize with you so much. I don't have a choice either, and I definitely need full time pay. I am beyond broke. I have nerve damage issues, so it makes it that much more painful for me to do transcription 8 hours a day.

I am going to school for something else, but for right now, I wish I could do transcription for 4 hours a day, and another for 4 hours a day, something that isn't so hard on my body. And that isn't so frustrating. And that pays hourly, so we don't have to struggle to pay bills when there is no transcription work. I'm looking into that now.

Yes, this job can be torture having to type - CINDY

[ In Reply To ..]
Having to type 8 hours straight as fast as possible, I relate this to torture and have for the last few years.

I quit MT a couple of years ago to go to CNA and I lost 30 pounds. Funny though I have been doing MT again for the past year and a couple months and haven't gained the weight back.

I have an interview with a local supermarket and hope I get it, they have great benefits and you even get like a week pay for Christmas bonus, I heard. Anyway, I am hoping to lose another 20 or 30 if I get that job.

This job is very hard on the body, everytime I sit down I start falling asleep.

Nobody really thinks this is a hard physical job, but it is.

I agree. sm - me

[ In Reply To ..]
I hope you get the job at the supermarket!

The physical part of MT, plus the frustration of figuring out what the inconsiderate, fast talking, slurring doctors are trying to say, plus the way our pay keeps going down, and how inconsiderately we're treated by companies while the suits are rolling in dough, and how our work keeps getting sent to other countries...it's all too much.

It is stressful . . . - Kindred

[ In Reply To ..]
Between my job and husband's business slowing to a screeching halt, we are having rough times too.

I hope the other poster gets the job at the supermarket too! It sure would be nice to buy some cute clothes and talk to people for a change (and a regular paycheck)! Good luck!

Trying To Find Part-time Or Full-time Employee Position (hospital/clinic)
Apr 30, 2013

If anyone knows of a hospital, clinic, or large practice offering remote full-time or part-time employee positions, I would really appreciate an email.  I have the sudden need to help support a family member long term (in addition to myself) and really need to find a long-term remote employee position for the stability.  Yes, I watch all the various employment sites and even individual hospital sites, but I was hoping that maybe, just maybe someone who works for a hospital that does th ...

MQ Rehire Policy For Part Time To Full Time
Apr 09, 2011

I worked for MQ full time and then went to part time last year, before finally quitting altogether because of health problems. I seem to remember an obscure policy that if you were full time and then went to part time, you could not go back to full time for a period of at least 1 year.  Can anyone verify that for me? IF, and this is a big IF, I were to go back to work for MQ, I would need to be full time. ...

Optiscript Part Time To Full Time
Nov 19, 2011

Does anyone care to share that if you are hired at optiscript part time will they let you change to full time easily? I know they are a small company and do not over hire so I do not know how easily this could be done.  I am thinking of cutting down to part time at my current employee so I can work part time elsewhere and eventually just leave my current employee once I see how the land lays elsewhere.  Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated :) ...

Change From Full- Time To Part- Time.
Sep 10, 2012

I am still debating whether to enroll at Andrews or M-TEC.  My husband is retiring in 2 years and I want to be able to work part-time after that.  Is it realistic to think that I can complete the course at Andrews or M-TEC in 12 months at the most, work full time for a year and then part-time after that.  I would want to be able to work from home.  I guess the other question is "How long after graduating could I expect to earn enough to make it worth the investment, in a reas ...

The Contradiction Of Full-time IC.
Jan 19, 2010

It seems to me that full-time IC is a contradiction.  I mean, in order to really be an IC, per IRS, don't they indicate that you should have more than one client?  So, if one client requires full-time, that means you have to work more than full-time in order to keep everyone happy?  Yeah, I know, there's no way to fight it, because there will always be hungry MTs anxious to fill the full-time IC positions.  In a perfect world, in my opinion, no MT would be required ...
