wondering about editor pay - FutureEditor

Just wondering if anyone here does any transcription editing and if they do, how much they make. sadly this was the only job i could find.

I do part editing and part transcription. I love the editing and when I get straight transcription jobs now, I kind of cringe. I think, "I have to type all that from scratch??" LOL

Editing is a real job, don't let the naysayers discourage you from doing it.

It's a skill that you have to learn, just like any other job. I think a lot of MTs complain about editing because they haven't taken the time to learn how to do it right and they haven't acquired the skills to do it productively.

To answer your question, I'm getting 5.5 cpl for editing. I can't tell the difference in my paychecks from when I was doing straight transcription alone.

I am very surprised. I was going to be sad because i thought it was going to be around 1 cpl! That's very encouraging, though! Hopefully the company I'm with pays as well as your's does! sorry if i was offensive!

As you start editing, you will see that there are some docs and some reports that VR "likes," and others that it does not! That makes a big difference. On one account, there are some VR documents that I can sail through, others that I have to edit, edit, edit. Also, very rote phrases are easier for VR to get right-- such as "an incision was made over the posterolateral aspect of the--" whatever. But "the patient reports that a hedgehog bit his dungarees while he was out gathering asparagus, causing him to trip over his basket of daffodils" might come out really, really strange. (That is an exaggeration, but VR does have more problems with free-form speech-- like HPI.) It can be wonderful for procedure and op notes, exams, standard medical phrases ("the patient was prescribed lisinopril"). I make 0.048 on my account.

That is a great rate as I making only 3.5 cpl - with 30 years experience

and I have been with this particular MTSO for almost 1 year. I recently went part-time and they lowered it even a little bit. I hate settling for this and would really like to be paid what I am worth. I do tons of ESL and about 300 lph average. I know people dont like to divulge where they are working but if they are hiring where you are, could you send me an email please? Like I said, been doing this for 30 years with experience in all specialties and particularly love OP notes. Thanks in advance and glad to hear some are being paid well!!

I'm not talking about the official proofreader positions that people hire in as. I'm talking about VR "editing" - meaning, when you get those reports where VR does what it's supposed to, and you only need to add 1 comma, for instance, in the entire report - and you are zipping along at the 300-400 lph you were promised, as justification for the 50% pay cut on switch to VR...isn't that actually proofreading?? ...but what about those OTHER reports...the ones that re ...

At first I was speeding up the dictation but found that it was impossible to correct while listening to the voice. My trainer encourages us to correct and listen at the same time. However, when speeding up the voice, that become impossible and I have to stop the dictation to make the corrections. I have a continuous problem with ExText and I cannot find a solution anywhere. I'm using it with Word 2003 professional version. All my Word settings match up the instructions I received from both the company I work for and Nuance.
