VR editor on-line course - Deb

Posted: Sep 03, 2012

I have been a radiology transcriptionist for 38 years, with so many companies going to VR, I am leaning towards taking an editor course.  Can you recommend an on-line course?

Thank-you

There are online VR editor courses? If so, I would consider it to be a waste of time and money. Akin to a scam. Companies will train you for it. Actually there isn't much to learn aside from learning some shortcut keys to move around in the document quicker. The proficiency in it is not gained through any "course," it is simply doing it over and over to increase your editing speed.

VR pays EXTREMELY low and has EXTREMELY unrealistic production expectations. Half the line rate of straight typing with double production quota of straight typing. Which is a farce. Some people may get the hang of it well enough to make a living. I couldn't. Most companies are going to VR, and that's why I'm getting out of MT.

All the companies I worked for that went to VR, the training took an hour over the phone, then it was basically sink or swim. I'm not being discouraging to you, but if you have a straight typing job, I don't know if voluntarily looking into VR would be a step up. Seems more like a last resort or end-of-the-line type of deal to me.

This is something I would only do - if it were 100% free. NM

Definitely a scam.

Ok well thats what I was asking if there were, I didnt know. Four of the last companies I worked for have gone to VR and didnt offer me to go with them to be an editor so I was not sure. I am retired from MD. Anderson Hospital as a rad transcriptionist for 30 years, just wanted to do something to keep busy and pick up a few extra dollars. Hey if a company would be willing to train me I'd be willing to go for it!!

It may be worth a try if you are retired and do just want some extra spending money.

I took a VR editing course - Straight transcriptionist

[ In Reply To ..]
I took one a few years ago offered by AHDI and TRSi because at the time I was considering moving into VR editing, plus I was able to get 10 CE credits towards my CMT. After that course, I decided to leave MT altogether instead of moving into VR editing. I got what I wanted from the course, which was to get a feel for the difference between voice recognition editing versus straight transcription without actually having to go through the process of getting another job and then leaving if I did not like VR editing, which I did end up hating. The course had you do a lot of real-life dictation run through a real-life VR engine, and the platform was ChartNet. It was an expensive lesson, but it really did give me a good feel for the difference between VR editing and straight transcription and help me decide to leave or stay in the profession.

Well I didnt know if there was a course or not, Im not familiar with it. One person did tell me that most companies will train you for it. Im not sure how to be an editor b/c most of the job offerings want experienced editors. Im am retired after 30 years from M.D.Anderson Hospital as a rad transcriptionist so this something to just keep me busy and make some extra money in addition to my retirement. Im just not ready to give it all up yet!! LOL

If I were you I'd just apply - for something part time

[ In Reply To ..]
and if you get hired just learn on the job. It's really not that hard, boring as heck, but not hard. Good luck.

Depends on Software - Old MT

[ In Reply To ..]
All software is different, so you would have to have training through whoever wanted you to use it, anyway.

In terms of knowing how to edit in general, if you know how to edit your own work with proofing after you've typed it, you just do that using the ASR engine keystrokes, many of which you probably already use. The only difference is that it's a big, fat mess, bigger and fatter than any boo-boos any of us could make on our own.

Try transcribing with your toes, then edit it. That will give you an idea of what you'll need to do. LOL.
so funny! so true! - laughing at Old MT-nm

If you can transcribe, you can edit. You don't need - a course to edit. All you need is caffeine! nm

MTSO will teach you her platform. When I applied for job - with MTSO it was for SM

[ In Reply To ..]
the job. MTSO explained how she wanted it done, straight, VR, verbatim, etc. If she wanted me to do a way that was new to me, she gave me the instructions, touched on the major points and left me her IM. It wasnt like I said, I will learn DQS and then I will go look for a job using DQS. I just got a job and they let me learn it with them. (Notice I didnt say they taught me)

"let me learn it" is funny - on so many levels-nm

wow great infor!! thanks for much to everyone!!

You wouldnt need to learn how to edit so much as you - need to learn the platform, the program SM

[ In Reply To ..]
MTSO uses to do the jobs. The problem I see is the fact you have only done radiology. Your problem might be more trying to get through on Op note or an H&P.

Afraid your big problem is fact you have only done - radiology for all those years. nm

Agree - Acute Care Definitely Needed These Days

[ In Reply To ..]
Clinic (in particular, Family Practice) is the "easy" stuff, so that's getting lost to offshoring by the MTSOs, and the clinics using VR without editors, and their point and clicks to add blood pressure, vitals, etc.

Rad is Getting Lost Quickly - If you can...

[ In Reply To ..]
I would train for some other specialties, if you can. And if you want to stay in the business. I have 15 years acute care, and I am looking to just get the heck out.

Ten years ago, I was told that rad was going to be one of the first things to get totally lost to electronics, and clinic was the next, so if you're going to train, I think now would be a good time.

Good luck!

Are You A VR Editor...or VR Proofreader?
May 05, 2011

I'm not talking about the official proofreader positions that people hire in as.  I'm talking about VR "editing" - meaning, when you get those reports where VR does what it's supposed to, and you only need to add 1 comma, for instance, in the entire report - and you are zipping along at the 300-400 lph you were promised, as justification for the 50% pay cut on switch to VR...isn't that actually proofreading?? ...but what about those OTHER reports...the ones that re ...

Medical Transcriptionist Week began May 20th to recognize MTs over a week. The theme this year: Patient Safety. MTs across the country are transcribing medical records and are dedicated to being a 1st-line defense against errors that can negatively and sometimes fatally affect you as a patient - physicians make mistakes. MTs ensure those errors do not end up in your Electronic Medical Record.  Healthcare consumers are you aware that local hospitals are outsourcing their work to what are kno ...
