I am very upset right now. I just got an e-mail stating that my checkwill be late for a week. I have looked long and hard to find a MT job and work my "buns" off to keep it. I am very frustrated, but also feel stuck. I know how hard the MT jobs are to find....like to have never got this one. My question is what do you say to someone who tells you that? My employer is a small contract transcription company and I am the only person who does the work for him/her. Anyone got advice on how to handle this, as I am so frustrated and not sure whether to wait it out or look elsewhere...keeping in mind the jobs are scare in this department.

Thanks to those who responded to me. I have only been a MT for 6 months now. In all honesty, I do need this job and really don't want to go anywhere else. I do give my boss credit for being honest and upfront. Afterall, he/she hired me and gave the benefit of the doubt to prove myself with the company. This is the first time being late, so maybe I am sweating this too much. Jobs are hard to come by in this business.

First of all, a disclaimer: At this point in my life/career (30+ years), I would agree with the other poster who said "I'll transcribe more after I receive payment in full."

However, having said that...You sound like you are new, just starting out, and said you looked long and hard to find this job. And you're right, jobs for brand new MTs are not easy to come by.

Years ago, I worked for a small MT company, a "one-woman show" really, although she did have 3 other transcriptionists (including me) who helped cover her accounts. And because she was so small, she wouldn't pay us after she received her payment from her accounts. Usually, payment was within a few days after we invoiced her, but occasionally it meant that we had to wait up to 2 or 3 weeks for our checks. This was okay with me though because I understood her situation, she couldn't afford to pay us until the clients paid her...but I also knew her quite well personally and trusted her, so I knew that if my check was delayed, it would be coming and she wasn't going to skip out on it.

So, I guess that's something that you have to deal with sometimes with a small company contractor.

There's really no good answer to your situation. But I guess you need to decide how much you need this job and how much do you know/trust your employer? If she/he is in constant communication with you and being very up front about the situation, I'd personally probably give it at least another week to see where things go.

does pay up, then everything is fine. If, however, she does not pay you by the time stated, I would definitely not work any more until you receive your pay and let her know.
