General transcription, IC - unemployed new grad

I was contacted today with a potential offer to transcribe general work as an IC. I have yet to find out out if they pay by the hour or line, their definition of a line, etc. This is a new concept for me as I've always been a hospital employee. While surfing posts on this board I learned that I have the power to define my pay and hours, but I would appreciate it if someone could shed more light on transcribing in that aspect. I would mainly like to know if the going rate for general is similar to the average MT pay (6-8 cpl straight, 3-4.5 VR for newbies), and also if my stated hours are contractual for eternity, or if I can alter/flex them as I go depending on the project?

[ In Reply To ..]I have only worked at an IC. I have a contract with the office I work for and have a 48 hours turn around time. I can work whenever I want, except during 3:30 amd and 4:30 am while the computer is doing a reboot. I get paid by the line and type in their EMR system, so at the end of the billing cycle, I just run a productivity report and submit an invoice with my line count. As an IC, they do not take taxes out of my check and I get no benefits, so the line rate you quoted is rather low for a true IC. Make sure you have a good contact in the office. I get paid twice a week, submitting an invoice for the 1st through the 15th and then the 16th through the end of the month. Make sure in your contract, that it states that they have to pay you within a certain number of days or weeks so you do not have to wait forever for your check. At the end of the year you will get a 1099 instead of a W2 and you should probably consult with an accountant about paying taxes quarterly. Good luck to you.

Is it the same 10 cents per line as medical? I am out of work right now with over 2 years of experience. I have been checking out freelance websites, and the pay seems pretty low. I tried InqScribe and it works okay, but I don't like that they make you use their built-in word processing program that doesn't have any text expanders. I use Express Scribe. Have you ever noticed than when a dictator tries to adopt a "conversational" style of dictating, that it is very hard to try and figure out what's being said? If you have a doctor that dictates a procedure, very clearly, and you can actually spell it, but it comes up misspelled in spellcheck. So I go on google, look in all my books, and benchmark (can't help it I am anal) and cannot find that exact procedure. In this case it was dictated as an "otomy" but all the references had is as an "ostomy" do you leave it as "dictated and spelled," do you change to the correct form which is the "ostomy," or do you leave a blank?
