For focus groups?!!!! What an INSULT and a rip-off! Min $1.00 an audio minute... and that's an absolute MINIMUM. Why do you think she's posting over here - because she can't get anyone with experience to work for that crap wage who knows what they're doing.

In researching general transcription opportunities, looking for a possible way out of MT work, I started keeping track of my audio minutes transcribed per day, and running the numbers. I was averaging about 50 cents per audio minute. For me to take a general transcription gig, they're going to have to offer me substantially more than that.

I replied via email and basically said no one with half a brain would work for that and it's insulting to even be offering it. That seems to be the name of the game anymore.

Lots of places offering general transcription at 50 cents per audio minute. It's amazing that they think they will get any kind of quality with that low of pay. It amazes me MT in general gets away with the wages they pay anymore. Definitely cannot make a living off transcription anymore. Great for pocket change or as a part-time gig, but definitely not living off of it. Sad.

what she is doing to the business by bidding too low just to get the work. I used my real name and my real email address. I've seen her around the boards before. I've been doing general/legal stuff for almost 20 years and it's people like her who drive the elance and other "bidding" sites to pay insulting wages. I would NEVER bid on a job on any of those sites. Reputable companies don't post work for sale there either and they do pay substantially more than what this poor excuse of an employer/contractor does.

I did work for her last month, because she told me that my pay could/would increase when she did not have to edit anymore. My work was close to perfect. I have been doing this 20+ years and did an excellent job, especially considering she never sent format sample, etc. She will get what she pays for......

If you do general transcription, can you recommend a good (free or low cost) transcription program for audio files? I tried InqScribe and it works okay, but I don't like that they make you use their built-in word processing program that doesn't have any text expanders. I use Express Scribe. Have you ever noticed than when a dictator tries to adopt a "conversational" style of dictating, that it is very hard to try and figure out what's being said? Is it the same 10 cents per line as medical? I am out of work right now with over 2 years of experience. I have been checking out freelance websites, and the pay seems pretty low. It is sometimes described as dollar amount per audio hour or as an hourly rate. They list the hourly rate as about $5 an hour or less. Is it because the work would be easy? I don't see why all you ladies have your feathers ruffled. On the AAPC website, coders make an average of $53k a year. Looking it up, the average MT pay is 36K. If you have a doctor that dictates a procedure, very clearly, and you can actually spell it, but it comes up misspelled in spellcheck. So I go on google, look in all my books, and benchmark (can't help it I am anal) and cannot find that exact procedure. In this case it was dictated as an "otomy" but all the references had is as an "ostomy" do you leave it as "dictated and spelled," do you change to the correct form which is the "ostomy," or do you leave a blank?
